Can you freeze Alphonso mango for the baby? - AlphonsoMango.in

Yes, you can freeze mango pulp for baby: peel ripe mango, blend it smooth, sieve it, and freeze small portions in a clean ice-cube tray, then move the cubes to a sealed container. Use them within about three months, after your paediatrician agrees.

Can you freeze mango pulp for baby?

We are Powle Home Foods in Mumbai, and we sell mangoes, not medical advice. The short answer to the question we hear every season is yes: ripe mango puree freezes well, and freezing it in small portions is one of the easiest ways to make a baby's fruit last beyond the week the box arrives. Many paediatric guidelines suggest starting solids at around six months, one new food at a time, but every baby is different, so ask your paediatrician before you offer mango and again if your baby has reacted to any fruit.

Freezing Alphonso mango puree for a baby in small portions

Freezing does not make a food safer or more nutritious; it only holds it as it was when you froze it. That is why the work happens before the freezer: choose a properly ripe mango, wash it, peel it, and remove every firm or green piece. Frozen puree loses a little of its aroma and brightness over time, but for a baby meal, texture and cleanliness matter more.

The fruit that works best is non-fibrous. Alphonso pulp is described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous, so it blends to a smooth puree with little to catch in a sieve. That is one reason parents ask us about it. Any ripe, non-fibrous mango can be treated the same way.

How to freeze mango puree for baby, step by step

Use clean hands, a clean board and clean tools, because the freezer slows bacteria but does not kill them.

  1. Pick ripe fruit. The mango should smell sweet at the stalk and give slightly when pressed at the shoulder. Under-ripe fruit is sour and harder to digest.
  2. Wash, peel and cut. Wash the skin under running water, peel it, and cut the flesh away from the stone. Discard any part near the skin that is firm or green.
  3. Blend smooth. Blend the flesh without water, sugar or anything else. Add nothing; ripe mango is sweet on its own.
  4. Sieve. Press the puree through a fine sieve with the back of a spoon to catch stray fibre. This is the step that matters most for a baby.
  5. Portion. Spoon the puree into a clean ice-cube tray, so that each cube is one small serving. Cover the tray.
  6. Freeze and transfer. Freeze until solid, then move the cubes to a clean, sealed freezer container or bag. Label it with the date.
  7. Thaw safely. Thaw one cube at a time in the fridge, or warm it gently in a clean bowl set in warm water. Stir, check that it is not hot, and serve.

Do not refreeze puree that has thawed, and do not keep what the baby leaves in the bowl. As a general guide, homemade fruit puree keeps its best quality in the freezer for around three months; if a cube looks or smells off, throw it away.

Chunks, whole mango and tinned pulp

Puree is only one option. Parents also ask about freezing chunks, whole fruit and ready-made pulp. Here is how they compare.

Ways to keep mango for a baby
Form How to prepare Good for Watch out for
Sieved puree cubes Blend, sieve, freeze in an ice-cube tray First foods, mixing with other purees Thaw one cube at a time; do not refreeze
Frozen chunks Peel, cut, freeze on a tray, then bag Blending later; toddlers and smoothies Hard and slippery; not a finger food for a young baby
Whole mango Not recommended Nothing Texture can turn watery after thawing
Tinned pulp Open, portion, use within the label's limit Months when fresh mango is not sold Read the label for added sugar

Frozen mango chunks are fine for blending, but they are firm and slippery, so they are not a finger food for a young baby. For older babies and toddlers, choking is the main concern with any whole piece of fruit, so cut small and ask your paediatrician what is suitable at each age. Our guide mango in the freezer storage guide covers freezing for adults and for general use.

Buying the fruit, and the pulp tin between seasons

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller. Ask any seller how their fruit was ripened before you buy it for a baby; no home test proves the answer. Our guide to identifying carbide-ripened mangoes lists the questions.

Fresh Alphonso comes from across 55 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt on the Konkan coast. See the Ratnagiri Alphonso or Devgad Alphonso page. It is sold by the dozen from Rs 1,849, and a dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. One fruit makes a few small baby servings, so a dozen goes a long way once portioned and frozen. Alphonso from this belt is GI-tagged in India under GI No. 139, and we hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). Check the product page for today's price.

We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Orders received before 1 PM are dispatched the same day. Check your PIN code at checkout. Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Outside the season we do not sell fresh Alphonso. The Alphonso mango pulp tin (850 g and 3.1 kg, from Rs 590) is available all year. Read the label for added sugar, and ask your paediatrician whether a tinned pulp suits your baby. Our difference between puree and pulp guide explains the two words.

What mango offers a baby

100 g of raw mango provides about 36 mg of vitamin C, roughly 40% of an adult Daily Value, along with some vitamin A as beta-carotene, a little fibre and natural sugars. Those are general figures for mango, not a claim about your baby or a promise of any benefit. Mango is a food, not a treatment. If your baby has reflux, loose stools, constipation or a known allergy, ask your doctor before offering fruit purees. For related questions, see our pages on mango and allergy in babies, mango and constipation in babies and mango and gas in babies.

Do not add honey for a baby under one year, and keep sugar, salt and spices out of the baby portion. When you are ready for family food, the same puree works for adults too, in aamras or a milkshake.
