Kolkata has its own mango culture. Bengal grows Himsagar, Langra and Fazli, and many families in the city would argue for Himsagar over anything from the west coast. Alphonso is a different fruit: smaller, more fragrant, with pulp described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous. It is not grown in Bengal, so it reaches Kolkata by courier from the Konkan coast.

We are Powle Home Foods in Mumbai, and we run AlphonsoMango.in. We source Alphonso across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt and send it to Kolkata addresses by Blue Dart. Our first sales were offline in 2019, and we have sold online since 2020. We have served 47,000+ customers, including offline and marketplace sales.

This page is for Kolkata buyers. It covers the long journey east, receiving a parcel in a Kolkata para or a Salt Lake and New Town complex, ripening in the city's humidity, and what Alphonso costs. Our other Kolkata pages are Alphonso mango in Kolkata and Alphonso mango price in Kolkata.

Bengal mangoes and Konkan Alphonso

We do not say Alphonso is better than Himsagar or Langra. They are different mangoes with different seasons and uses. Himsagar is prized in Bengal for its own sweetness and lack of fibre, and its season overlaps with Alphonso's. Many Kolkata families buy Alphonso as a change or as a gift for relatives who grew up with it in the west.

Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India under GI No. 139, and we hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). Ratnagiri is a district, and Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district. Both lie on the Konkan coast and grow the same variety, so we do not rank one above the other. You can order from either Ratnagiri Alphonso or Devgad Alphonso.

Harvesting is done before dawn at Brahma Muhurta, by hand, with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, so the tree is not shaken and the fruit is not dropped. That care matters more for Kolkata than for a city near the coast, because the parcel travels across the country.

Delivery to Kolkata

We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Check your PIN code at checkout. Kolkata is far from the Konkan coast, so read the delivery message at checkout before you pay. We do not promise a delivery day for any named city, because it depends on the PIN code and the courier route.

  • Older neighbourhoods. Lanes in north and south Kolkata can be hard to find. Give a landmark, such as a market or a metro station, with the address.
  • Salt Lake, New Town and Rajarhat. Give the block, sector or complex name, the tower and the flat number, and tell the security desk to expect a Blue Dart parcel.
  • Howrah and the suburbs. Enter the exact PIN code, and write to us if the checkout does not accept it.
  • Keep your phone on. The courier may call before arrival.

Open the box on the day it arrives. If anything is damaged, report it within 24 hours of delivery by writing to support@alphonsomango.in or calling 8369048029. Our delivery period guide and shipping charges guide have more detail.

Ripening in Kolkata humidity

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. Ethylene up to 100 ppm is the permitted alternative. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller. No home test proves how a mango was ripened, and a bucket-of-water test is only a rough clue, not proof.

Alphonso mangoes from the Konkan delivered fresh in Kolkata

Kolkata is hot and humid through the Alphonso season, and humidity speeds up softening. Take the mangoes out of the box on the day they arrive and spread them out so air can move around each fruit. Keep them at room temperature, away from direct sun, and do not refrigerate unripe fruit. Check daily. A sweet smell near the stalk and a slight give near the shoulder mean the fruit is ready; eat it soon or chill it briefly. Our guide on ripening Alphonso at home has the steps.

Choosing a size and quantity

Alphonso is graded by weight, and the grade decides what a dozen costs. Alphonso fruit generally weighs 150 to 300 g, and a dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. Smaller fruit suits everyday eating and aamras; larger fruit suits gifting, where each mango is meant to be seen.

If you are ordering for the first time in Kolkata, start with one dozen so you learn how quickly the fruit ripens in your home. Because the journey is long and ripe fruit does not keep, two smaller orders a few weeks apart often work better than one large box. For a wedding, a Poila Boishakh gathering or an office gift, write to us with your quantity and date. We do not publish a minimum order or a volume discount, so we will answer for your case.

Season, price and pulp

Alphonso is harvested about February to June, and the best supply runs from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Outside the season fresh Alphonso is not sold, because the trees give one crop a year.

Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso start from Rs 1,849 per dozen. Check the product page for today's price, because it changes with grade. Alphonso pulp tins are available all year, in 850 g and 3.1 kg sizes from Rs 590, and they work well for aamras and sweets. See the Alphonso Mango Pulp Tin and our aamras recipe.

About 100 g of raw mango provides about 36 mg of vitamin C, roughly 40% of the Daily Value. Mango also carries natural sugars, so people with a health condition should ask their doctor or dietitian how much suits them.
