What Kesar amba is

Kesar is the Hindi and Gujarati word for saffron, and the name describes the fruit: the pulp is orange. In Marathi a mango is "amba", and in Gujarati it is "keri", which is why people search for Kesar amba and Kesar keri. The variety is also called Gir Kesar, after the Gir region of Gujarat where it is grown.

Kesar is said to have been grown in 1931 by the Junagadh Wazir Sale Bhai, and is said to have been known as Kesar since 1934, when the Nawab of Junagadh remarked on its orange pulp. We keep the "said to" because the story is part history and part local memory. Wikipedia carries the same account.

Kesar amba vs Alphonso: which should you order?

Both are loved, and neither is "better" in every way. The table compares what we can say plainly. Kesar is sold by the box and Alphonso by the dozen, so look at the fruit count and weight on the product page before you compare price.

A practical way to choose: if you cook aamras for a large family and watch the budget, ask what Kesar offers per box. If you are choosing a gift, or you want the fruit most people name when they say "hapus", pick Alphonso. Many households buy both. Our guide to Kesar mango and how to choose it goes into more detail.

Choosing real Kesar

The most useful habit when buying any mango online is to ask questions. Ask where the fruit was grown, and ask how it was ripened. A seller who answers clearly is easier to trust than one who talks only about price.

  • Pulp colour: Kesar pulp is orange. Deep orange pulp is the clue most buyers look for.
  • Aroma: a ripe mango smells sweet and fruity near the stalk.
  • Ripening: selling fruit ripened with calcium carbide (acetylene) gas is prohibited under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011.

Colour and aroma are rough clues, not proof. No home test, including the bucket or water test, shows how a mango was ripened, so the seller's answer matters more than any trick.

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds.

For Kesar, the same rule applies: we do not ripen any of our mangoes with carbide. We hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139) for Alphonso, and you can read our credentials on the Brand Facts page. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller.

Delivery and handling

We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Whether your address is one of them depends on the PIN code, not the city name, so we do not promise a fixed day. Enter your PIN code at checkout and you will see what applies.

  • Open the box on the day it arrives and check the fruit.
  • If anything arrives damaged, report it to us within 24 hours of delivery at support@alphonsomango.in or on 8369048029.
  • If the mangoes are still firm, keep them at room temperature, away from direct sun, until they smell sweet near the stalk and give slightly to gentle pressure.
  • Refrigerate only once the fruit is ripe, because cold stops the ripening of unripe fruit.
