Delivery Across India

Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive the journey, ripening fully within about three days of delivery. The supply chain runs 48–72 hours from harvest to dispatch: roughly 2 hours tree to packhouse, 10–12 hours in an air-conditioned vehicle to Mumbai, then 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening before the box ships.

Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes. Dispatch is via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code.

The box itself is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard courier box — 130 gsm paper, alternate flute orientation, reinforced corners, a 12-slot partition that takes transit pressure instead of the fruit, and six air holes for airflow during ripening. Every mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm, length 100–120 mm) that prevents side bruising, skin friction, stem punctures and latex cross-contamination. No fresh Kesar or Alphonso is shipped July to January — that is the honest limit of a seasonal fruit.

Origin of Gir Kesar Mangoes

Kesar mangoes from Junagadh and Gir — GI Tag No. 185

Kesar holds GI Tag No. 185, which covers orchards in Junagadh and Gir, Gujarat. The variety is sometimes called Gir Kesar to distinguish it clearly from mangoes labelled Kesar but grown elsewhere. The Gir forest region's laterite soil, proximity to the Arabian Sea and the specific rainfall pattern of Saurashtra give the fruit its characteristic deep-orange pulp — a colour close enough to saffron strands that the name stuck.

India exports Kesar in significant volumes to the Gulf, the UK and the US each season. Among exported varieties, it sits behind Alphonso in total volume but ahead of most others. Kesar from certified GI-tagged orchards is traceable to the district — which matters when you are buying online and cannot see the fruit before it arrives.

How Did Kesar Mango Get Its Name?

The pulp of a fully ripe Kesar mango is a deep saffron-orange. In Gujarati and Hindi, kesar means saffron. The name came from the colour, not the spice — though the sweetness of a good Kesar at 18–22° Brix does conjure something almost as precious. The variety was developed and popularised around the Junagadh region, where the Nawab-era horticultural traditions kept careful records of cultivar selection.

Ripeness and Quality

We dispatch Kesar at 70–80% ripeness. At that stage the skin may still carry a slight green blush at the shoulders; within two to three days at room temperature the fruit softens fully, the saffron colour deepens and the aroma fills the room. Do not refrigerate an unripe Kesar — cold stops the ripening process and the pulp turns grainy.

What is the Brix level of Kesar mango?

Brix at full ripeness runs 18–24° for Kesar, the same window as Ratnagiri Alphonso. Early-season fruit from February tends toward the lower end; May fruit from orchards that get the full Saurashtra summer heat pushes higher. We do not blend cold-store fruit into season dispatches.

Is Kesar mango carbide-ripened?

Not here. Every box from AlphonsoMango.in — Kesar or Alphonso — goes through natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening in temperature-controlled rooms at the Mumbai packhouse. No ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (Thane, NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284) independently tests fruit through the season; in April 2025 all 28 residues were within Codex maximum residue limits. We say independently tested and within limits — not pesticide-free, because one residue was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a permitted limit of 0.2 mg/kg.

Nutrition

Ripe Kesar pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. That covers about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, a polyphenol found in mango pulp, showed anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies (Govindappa et al., 2011). Kesar is also a source of iron and dietary fibre — useful context for buyers who want more than sweetness from their fruit.

Alphonso puree is suitable as a first food for babies from about 6 months — keep it as a serving suggestion, not medical advice, and check with your paediatrician.

People Also Ask

What is special about Kesar mango?

Kesar mango holds GI Tag No. 185, covering orchards in Junagadh and Gir, Gujarat. Its pulp is a deep saffron-orange — which is exactly where the name comes from. Brix at full ripeness runs 18–24°, the fruit ripens naturally without carbide, and it ships across India by courier.

If you want an entry point into GI-tagged Indian mangoes at ₹999, Kesar is the place to start.

Is Kesar mango better than Alphonso?

Neither is better — they are different. Kesar from Junagadh and Gir is honey-sweet with a clean saffron-orange pulp and a gentler price, starting at ₹999. Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg is richer, more floral and fibreless, starting at ₹1,849. Which you prefer depends on what you want from the fruit.

Forty-six percent of our customers reorder Alphonso at an average of 2.8 boxes a season — but Kesar draws its own loyal buyers every year.

What does Kesar mango taste like?

Kesar tastes honey-sweet with a deep saffron-orange pulp and almost no fibre. The aroma is strong and warm rather than the sharp floral note you get from Alphonso. Brix at full ripeness runs 18–24°, and May fruit from Saurashtra orchards that get the full summer heat tends to sit at the higher end of that range.

Let the fruit sit at room temperature for two to three days after delivery — the colour deepens, the flesh softens and the aroma fills the room before you even cut it.

Does Costco sell Kesar mangoes?

Costco does not sell GI-tagged Gir Kesar mangoes sourced from Junagadh and Gir with verified origin. If you want certified GI Tag No. 185 Kesar, naturally hay-bed ripened without carbide and delivered across India, alphonsomango.in/products/kesar-mango is where to order, with prices from ₹999.
