The only genuine fruit comes from GI Tag No. 139 territory: Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg (Devgad) districts of Konkan, Maharashtra. Ratnagiri vs Devgad — Which Should You Choose?

Both varieties carry GI No. 139. The difference is in geography and, for many buyers, in Brix. From our repeat-order data across 47,000+ customers, north India — including UP — consistently leans toward Ratnagiri. Mumbai leans Devgad. Neither is "better"; they are different.

Grade and Weight Guide

Every fruit is weighed and slotted into one of four grades before packing. Small (150–180 g) suits buyers who want more pieces per box. Jumbo (275–300 g) is the corporate gifting default — one fruit fills a dessert bowl.

  • Small: 150–180 g
  • Medium: 180–225 g
  • Extra Large: 250–275 g
  • Jumbo: 275–300 g

Delivery Across Uttar Pradesh

We dispatch within 48–72 hours of harvest. From the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, fruit travels about 10–12 hours by air-conditioned vehicle to our Mumbai packhouse. It then ripens on a natural hay bed for 24–48 hours before dispatch. Fruit leaves at 70–80% ripeness and completes ripening at your home within about three days of delivery.

Courier partner is BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on pin code. Transit to most UP cities — Agra, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Meerut, Allahabad — is 1–3 days. We service 15,000–17,000 pin codes across India.

Packaging: a 5-ply corrugated CFB box (130 gsm, courier-grade) with a 12-slot partition, six air holes, and every mango in its own foam-net sleeve. The partition carries transit pressure. The fruit does not.

What we do not do: We do not dispatch fresh Alphonso July through January. If you are reading this outside the March–June season, you can join the waiting list and we will notify you when the next season opens.

How to Order

  1. Select your variety and grade: Choose Ratnagiri or Devgad Alphonso, then pick your weight grade (Small through Jumbo) and box size — half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen — at alphonsomango.in/collections/mangoes.
  2. Add to cart and enter your UP address: The checkout confirms serviceability for your pin code; if your courier partner is BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees, the order goes through automatically.
  3. Dispatch and delivery: Your order ships within 48–72 hours of harvest via whichever courier serves your pin code, reaching most Uttar Pradesh addresses in 1–3 days; any damage on arrival is replaced 100% with photo evidence submitted within 24 hours of delivery.

Where These Mangoes Actually Come From

Premium Alphonso mango from Konkan sourced for delivery across India including Uttar Pradesh

Powle Home Foods sources from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. In Ratnagiri taluka alone, that includes Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Mirya, Kasheli and Majgaon. In Devgad taluka: Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Girye and Mithbav, among others.

Prashant Powle started sourcing directly from these villages in 2017, long before the brand took its commercial form. The reasoning was simple: if you control which orchard the fruit comes from, you control Brix consistency. Our 100+ partner farmer families manage orchards that are typically 12–25 years old, selected partly for their alternate-bearing management — trees that rest every other year produce more concentrated fruit in the years they bear.

What the GI Tag Actually Confirms

GI No. 139 covers Alphonso mango grown in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Powle Home Foods holds GI Authorised User number AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019) for Ratnagiri and AU/6932 for Devgad. Any seller claiming "GI-certified Alphonso" without an Authorised User number is using the label without the credential.

Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — a district-product award, not a brand award, but it confirms official recognition of the geography's quality.

How Fruit Leaves the Orchard

Harvest uses a Nutan/Zela pole with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole fitted with a camera gives the harvester a precise view of the stem angle before the cut. This matters because a stem that snaps rather than cuts cleanly leaks latex onto the skin, which triggers black spots within 24 hours.

After harvest, fruit goes through controlled hot-water treatment to reduce surface issues, then post-harvest cooling at the packhouse. Every mango is weighed, graded, and passed through AI/ML-assisted machine scanning for both external deformities and internal spongy tissue — a defect that is invisible from outside and that carbide-ripened fruit is particularly prone to masking.

Ripening — What "Natural" Means Here

Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is ripening on hay, monitored, not gas-triggered.

Calcium carbide is banned under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act for a reason: it produces acetylene gas, which triggers surface colour change before the pulp is ready. The result looks ripe and tastes flat. Hay-bed ripening follows the fruit's own ethylene production, so pulp and skin arrive at the same point together. Brix at full ripeness runs 18–24° — Devgad fruit typically hits the upper end of that range.

Pesticide residue testing is done weekly through the season by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284). The April 2025 report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) tested all 28 residues. Twenty-seven came back below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). Thiamethoxam was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex maximum of 0.2 mg/kg — well within limits. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits." We do not say "pesticide-free."

Season and Availability

The Alphonso season runs February to June, with peak volume in March, April and May. By late June, yields drop sharply. July through January — nothing. We do not sell fresh Alphonso outside this window. If you see "Alphonso mango" listed for sale in August in UP, it is either frozen pulp, a different variety, or not what it claims to be.

Order early in the season (March–April) for the most consistent Brix. The late-May crop is smaller-fruited as trees exhaust their reserve, and Brix can vary more batch to batch.

Nutrition

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for women (65 mg/day). Govindappa et al., 2011 documented mangiferin's anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies — mangiferin is present in the peel and kernel, not the pulp, so we note it as context rather than a claim about eating the fruit.

Alphonso pulp is suitable as a first fruit for babies from about 6 months — but treat that as a serving suggestion, not medical advice. A paediatrician's guidance applies.
