What is Kesar mango, and how is it different from saffron?

Many people who search for Kesar online are looking for saffron, the spice, and many others want the mango. Kesar mango is a fruit grown in Gujarat, and its name comes from the saffron-like orange colour of its pulp. If you came here for the spice, our Saffron Kesar product page is the right place. The rest of this page is about the mango.

We are Powle Home Foods, a Mumbai business that runs AlphonsoMango.in. We sell Kesar mangoes alongside our Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso, Pairi, Alphonso mango pulp and cashews, and we deliver across India by Blue Dart. This guide covers where Kesar comes from, what it is called in different places, how to buy it online with confidence, what boxes we offer and how to look after the fruit.

Where Kesar mango comes from

Kesar is also called Gir Kesar, after the Gir region of Gujarat, and the Junagadh area is closely tied to its story. According to Wikipedia, Kesar is said to have been grown in 1931 by the Junagadh Wazir Sale Bhai, and is said to have been known as Kesar since 1934, when the Nawab of Junagadh remarked on its orange pulp. We repeat this as a reported history, not as something we can prove. What is certain is the present-day picture: Kesar is a Gujarat mango, and it is a different variety from the Alphonso of the Konkan coast of Maharashtra.

Our Kesar boxes are labelled as Gujarat Kesar on the product page, so you know the state before you pay. For a deeper read on the variety, see our guide to Gir Kesar mango.

Kesar mango boxes and price

Kesar is sold by the box. Boxes start from Rs 999 for a half dozen, and a one-dozen box is also available. The product page lists the sizes and the price on the day you order, and prices can change.

We sell by the box and do not quote per-kilogram prices, because a kilogram price hides the fruit size and grade. If you want to compare city-wise listings, see our pages on Kesar mango price in Delhi, Surat and Ahmedabad. There is no GST on fresh mangoes, and our invoice shows it.

How to buy Kesar mangoes online safely

Online mango shopping works well when you ask the right questions. Use this list with any seller.

  • Variety and state. Does the page say Kesar and name Gujarat? A page that says only mango Kesar is not enough.
  • Paperwork. Does the seller show an FSSAI licence number? Ours is 10020022011783.
  • Ripening. Ask how the fruit was ripened. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds.
  • Courier. Does the seller name the courier and say what happens if fruit arrives damaged? We dispatch by Blue Dart, and we ask customers to report damage within 24 hours of delivery.
  • Price form. Is the price shown per box, with the box size stated?

Selling fruit ripened with calcium carbide (acetylene) gas is prohibited under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. No single colour, smell or water test settles how a mango was ripened, so the seller's own account counts for more than a test at home. Our guide to identifying carbide-ripened mangoes lists the clues and their limits.

Kesar or Alphonso: which should you buy?

They are different fruits from different states, and neither is better. Kesar comes from Gujarat and is known for its orange pulp. Alphonso, called Hapus in Marathi, comes from the Konkan coast of Maharashtra. Many households buy both and decide by taste. If you want to try the other, our order pages are Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango and Devgad Alphonso Mango, which start from Rs 1,849 a dozen.

Firm fruit keeps ripening at room temperature, and it is ready when it gives slightly at the stalk end and smells sweet. Keep ripe fruit in the fridge if you will not eat it within a day or two. If any fruit is damaged in transit, tell us within 24 hours of delivery. Our guide to ripening mangoes at home has the full method.
