Kesar vs Devgad Alphonso – Which One?

Both are worth ordering. They are not the same fruit. Here is the honest comparison.

Feature Gir Kesar Devgad Alphonso

Season March to June February to June (peak March–May)
Brix at ripeness Sweet, saffron-toned pulp 18–24°, Devgad fruit typically at the upper end
Fruit weight Varies by grade 150–300 g by grade (Small to Jumbo)

Ahmedabad buyers who grew up eating Kesar usually start with the Kesar listing. First-timers often order both and decide for themselves. That is the honest answer.

Delivery to Ahmedabad

We dispatch from our Mumbai packhouse via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees — which courier depends on your Ahmedabad pin code. Transit to Ahmedabad is typically 1–2 days. We cover 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes across India.

Fruit leaves the packhouse at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive the courier journey without bruising. It finishes ripening at room temperature within about three days of delivery. If you open the box and find transit damage, photograph it and contact us within 24 hours. We replace 100%.

One honest limit: we do not sell fresh Alphonso or Kesar from July to January. The trees produce nothing worth dispatching outside the February–June window. Any site claiming fresh GI Kesar in October is selling you something else.

Where Gir Kesar Actually Comes From

Gir Kesar holds GI Tag No. 185, covering Junagadh and the Gir forest belt. The fruit takes its name from the saffron colour of its pulp — "kesar" means saffron in Gujarati and Hindi. Trees grow in the shadow of the Girnar hills, in laterite-rich soil that gives the fruit its distinctly sweet, low-acid profile.

The Ahmedabad mango market receives Kesar from Junagadh by road — typically 300–350 km. Wholesale buyers at Jamalpur fruit market and Maninagar's neighbourhood vendors both stock it through May. Quality varies considerably by the time it reaches a city stall: ripening is often accelerated artificially, and fruit that spent four days in an unrefrigerated truck shows it.

We source Kesar from the GI-designated zone and ripen it in our Mumbai packhouse — no ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide. The 24–48 hours on a hay bed at the packhouse is monitored, not gas-triggered. Prashant Powle selected this approach specifically because carbide ripening masks the saffron aroma that defines good Kesar.

What Moves the Price in Ahmedabad's Mango Market

Three things move Kesar prices in Ahmedabad each season.

Yield from Junagadh. A dry winter followed by unseasonal rain at flowering (which happened in early 2025) cuts the crop sharply. Fewer boxes means higher wholesale rates, and that passes to retail. The Economic Times interviewed Prashant Powle in June 2026 specifically about how weather shocks hit GI mango supply — the piece is at economictimes.indiatimes.com if you want the detail.

Grade and size. A Medium fruit (180–225 g) costs less per dozen than an Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g). Local Ahmedabad markets rarely grade by weight — they grade by appearance, which is not the same. Our online listings are weight-graded, so the price comparison is direct.

Channel markup. A Jamalpur wholesale crate passes through two or three hands before it reaches a city fruit stall. Our online price covers GI-certified sourcing, AI/ML-assisted machine scanning for internal defects like spongy tissue, foam-net sleeving, five-ply courier-grade corrugated packing and doorstep delivery. The per-fruit cost is comparable when you account for wastage from unmarked, ungraded market fruit.

How We Ripen the Fruit

Every mango we dispatch — Kesar or Alphonso — goes through the same ripening process. After harvest from the Junagadh or Konkan orchards, the fruit travels in air-conditioned vehicles to the packhouse. There it rests on a hay bed in a temperature-controlled room for 24–48 hours. No gas. No chemicals. The hay absorbs excess moisture and the natural ethylene from the fruit itself triggers even ripening.

We test weekly through the season. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. in Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284) ran a full residue panel — 28 compounds — on our 2025 batch. All 28 were within Codex maximum residue limits. Twenty-seven of 28 were below the 0.01 mg/kg limit of quantification. We say independently tested, within Codex limits — not "pesticide-free," because that is not what the data says.

We also do not claim carbide-free certification from that lab. The Envirocare panel does not test calcium carbide. We simply do not use it, and the flavour profile of our fruit versus a carbide-ripened market mango makes that obvious within one bite.

How to Order

  1. Select grade: Choose the Kesar Mango listing (₹999–₹1,699) or the Devgad Alphonso listing (₹1,849–₹5,499) based on the grade that fits your quantity and budget.
  2. Add to cart: Pick half dozen, one dozen or two dozen — box sizes shown on the product page.
  3. Dispatch: We ship via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your Ahmedabad pin code; most Ahmedabad addresses receive the box in 1–2 days.

People Also Ask

Which mango is famous in Ahmedabad?

Gir Kesar is the mango Ahmedabad knows best. It holds GI Tag No. 185, covering Junagadh and the Gir forest belt. The saffron-yellow pulp, mild fibre, and low-acid sweetness suit the Gujarati palate. Jamalpur fruit market and neighbourhood vendors across Maninagar stock it heavily from March through May every season.

Which is the biggest mango market in India?

Lucknow's Amausi wholesale market and Delhi's Azadpur mandi compete for that title most seasons, with Azadpur handling the largest documented volume of mango arrivals in northern India. Mumbai's Vashi APMC is the dominant wholesale hub for western India, including Alphonso and Kesar from Maharashtra and Gujarat. No single market holds an undisputed national rank.

Which city is famous for mango in Gujarat?

Junagadh is Gujarat's mango capital. The Gir Kesar mango, carrying GI Tag No. 185, grows in the laterite-rich soil around the Girnar hills and the Gir forest belt — both within Junagadh district. The city's wholesale yards dispatch Kesar by road to Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and beyond through the March-to-June season.

What is the price of 1 kg of mango in India?

Prices span a wide range by variety and channel. Ahmedabad's mango market prices Kesar at roughly ₹500–600 per kg during peak season. GI-tagged Alphonso from Ratnagiri or Devgad runs higher at retail. Local market fruit is cheaper but often ungraded by weight, artificially ripened, and carries more waste than the sticker price suggests.
