Anand is dairy country. Gujaratis here know their food — and Hapus aam holds a place at the table that no other mango touches. Whether it goes into aamras, amrakhand, or eaten straight in cubes after dinner, the Alphonso arriving in Anand needs to be the real article, not a carbide-ripened approximation from a wholesale mandi.

We ship directly from our Mumbai packhouse to Anand via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. The fruit leaves at 70–80% ripeness, firm enough for the journey, and reaches full ripeness within three days of delivery.

Ratnagiri vs Devgad Alphonso: Which to Choose?

Both carry GI No. 139. Both come from the Konkan coast. The difference is real but subtle — Devgad fruit tends to sit at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range, with a slightly richer sweetness. Ratnagiri Alphonso has a more pronounced aroma and a tartness in the early season that many buyers from north and west India prefer. Our own repeat-order data shows that customers across Gujarat lean toward Devgad — but it is worth ordering both grades in a season and deciding for yourself.

Delivery to Anand, Gujarat

We dispatch from our Mumbai packhouse within 48–72 hours of harvest. The supply chain from tree to dispatch runs like this: fruit is hand-harvested in villages like Girye or Nachane, transported by air-conditioned vehicle to the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, reaches Mumbai in 10–12 hours, ripens on a natural hay bed for 24–48 hours under monitoring, and then dispatches.

Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes. Courier is assigned by pin code — BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees — so specify your complete pin code at checkout for the correct assignment.

Packaging: every mango sits in a foam-net sleeve inside a 12-slot partition inside a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box with six air holes. The partition carries transit pressure so the fruit doesn't. Alphonso lenticels blacken when rubbed against another surface — the foam net prevents exactly that.

If fruit arrives damaged, we replace 100% with photo evidence submitted within 24 hours of delivery.

Where These Mangoes Actually Come From

Alphonso mango origin villages in Ratnagiri and Devgad Maharashtra sourced for Gujarat customers

Prashant Powle and the Powle Home Foods team source from 48 coastal villages of Ratnagiri and Devgad. In Ratnagiri taluka: Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad, Gaonkhadi, Ambeshet, Mirya, Kalbadevi, Majgaon, Kasheli, Adi. In Devgad taluka: Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Hindale, Naringre, Kanyabag, Padel, Girye, Waghotan, Kunkeshwar, Mithbav, and others. Each of these villages sits within the GI-tagged zone for Alphonso.

The partner orchards are typically 12–25 years old, sea-facing, selected on Brix consistency and alternate-bearing management. That last point matters: trees that are managed for alternate bearing produce fruit of consistent quality year after year rather than flooding the market every other season with oversized, watery mangoes.

Harvest is done by hand using a Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For taller trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera is used. This is not a detail most suppliers will tell you — and it directly affects whether the mango you receive has an intact stem and no bruising at the shoulders.

What the GI Tag Actually Means for Buyers in Anand

A GI tag is a government-issued geographical indication. Alphonso mango holds GI Tag No. 139, covering Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. AlphonsoMango.in is registered as GI Authorised User AU/5974/GI/139/260, with GI Registry Certificate No. 4163 issued 16 October 2019. This means the fruit sold under our brand is auditable — it comes from within the GI zone and meets the criteria set by the GI registry.

What a GI tag does not do: it does not guarantee that every mango at your local fruit stall labelled "Hapus" is real. The GI certification is on the grower and seller, not the label. When you buy from a GI Authorised User, you have a traceable chain. When you buy loose at a market, you mostly don't.

How to Know Your Alphonso Is Genuine

A real Ratnagiri or Devgad Alphonso has a thin, smooth skin with a yellow-orange blush when ripe, a distinct saffron-coloured pulp, and a fibre-free texture. The aroma is unmistakable — sharp, sweet, slightly floral. It does not smell of acetylene (the gas released by calcium carbide).

We test for pesticide residues weekly through the season at Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane — NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284. The April 2025 report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) found all 28 tested residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification of 0.01 mg/kg. One residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a permitted limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say independently tested and within Codex limits — not pesticide-free, because one residue was detected within limits.

We do not use carbide, ethylene chambers, or any other artificial ripening agent. The hay-bed (Aadi) ripening at our Mumbai packhouse is natural and monitored — the 24–48 hours the fruit spends there is ripening time, not gas treatment.

Ripening and Why It Matters

Carbide-ripened mangoes reach colour quickly but the flavour doesn't follow. The Brix stays low and the pulp is either grainy or waterlogged. We have seen this across market samples in Gujarat and it is the main reason customers who ordered once from a local supplier and received disappointing fruit then search for a direct source.

Our fruit ripens on a hay bed — the same Aadi method that Konkan farmers have used for generations. It is slow, temperature-monitored, and allows the mango's own ethylene to drive the process from inside out. The result is pulp that reaches 18–24° Brix at full ripeness, depending on the variety, grade and point in the season.

We dispatch at 70–80% ripeness. By the time the box reaches Anand and you open it, the fruit needs two to three days at room temperature to finish. Do not refrigerate before that point — cold stops the ripening process and results in uneven texture.

How to Store Alphonso at Home in Anand

Keep the box at room temperature away from direct sunlight when it arrives. Once fully ripe (skin yields slightly at the stem end, aroma is strong), refrigerate and consume within two to three days. Cut fruit should be refrigerated in a sealed container and eaten within 24 hours. Do not stack heavy objects on the box — the foam-net sleeves protect each fruit from neighbours, but external compression still causes bruising.

Season and Availability

The Alphonso season runs February to June, with peak supply from March to May. This is the only window when we ship fresh fruit. From July onward through January, fresh Alphonso is not available — do not order fresh mangoes in that period from any source claiming otherwise.

In a strong season, you can expect good fruit from early March. In a weather-impacted year — as Prashant Powle described to the Economic Times in June 2026, when unseasonal rain affected the Konkan crop — the peak may shift and volumes tighten. We update availability on the website as the season progresses. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

What About Gir Kesar Mango for Anand Buyers?

Gir Kesar holds GI Tag No. 185, covering Junagadh and Gir in Gujarat — which means it is actually the local GI mango for much of Gujarat. We source Kesar from that region and sell it alongside Alphonso. For buyers in Anand who want the authentic Saurashtra mango alongside Hapus, both are available on the same collection page. Kesar and Alphonso have different season peaks, so ordering both across the season is practical.

Nutrition

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily intake for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, a compound found in mango, showed anti-inflammatory activity in a cell study by Govindappa et al. (2011). These are useful numbers — they are not a reason to treat mangoes as medicine.

Alphonso pulp is suitable for babies from about six months as a first fruit, introduced as a smooth puree. This is a serving suggestion, not medical advice — check with your paediatrician before introducing any new food.

People Also Ask

How much does 1 kg of Alphonso mango cost?

Alphonso mango prices vary by grade, origin and season. Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso are sold by the dozen or half dozen, not by the kilogram, because individual fruit weight ranges from 150 g to 300 g depending on grade. Prices shift across the February–June season based on yield and demand.

Which mango is famous in Gujarat?

Gir Kesar is the mango most closely associated with Gujarat, holding GI Tag No. 185 for the Junagadh and Gir region. Alphonso, known as Hapus, is grown in Maharashtra's Konkan coast and holds GI No. 139 covering Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts — it is widely bought by Gujaratis, including in Anand, as a premium seasonal fruit.

What is Alphonso mango called in Gujarati?

Alphonso mango is called Hapus in Gujarati, the same name used across Maharashtra and most of western India. The word is a phonetic adaptation of Afonso, the Portuguese name given to this variety centuries ago when Portuguese traders introduced grafting techniques in Goa and the Konkan. In Anand households it is commonly ordered by that name for aamras and amrakhand.

Which Alphonso mango is best in India?

Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso, both under GI No. 139, are widely considered the best in India. Devgad fruit sits at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range with a richer sweetness. Ratnagiri has a stronger aroma and early-season tartness that buyers across north and west India often prefer.

If you are ordering to Anand, Gujarat, our repeat-order data shows Gujarat customers lean toward Devgad — though ordering one dozen of each in a season is the clearest way to decide.
