Surat sits roughly 300 km from the Devgad coast. Repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows that buyers in Gujarat often pick Kesar for familiarity, then switch to Devgad Alphonso once they taste the difference. Both travel well in the same 5-ply corrugated box.

Delivery to Surat

Fruit is harvested by hand using a Nutan/Zela pole with a catching net — the tree is never shaken, the mango never falls. From harvest, the chain runs like this: roughly 2 hours to the Devgad or Ratnagiri packhouse, post-harvest cooling, then 10–12 hours in an air-conditioned vehicle to the Mumbai packhouse. At Mumbai, 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening follow. Total farm-to-dispatch time: 48–72 hours.

Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes. The courier is BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees, assigned by pin code — we do not have a single carrier for all Surat addresses.

Fruit leaves at 70–80% ripeness, firm enough for transit. It finishes ripening at room temperature within about three days of delivery. Do not refrigerate an unripe mango — cold stops the ripening process and damages the flavour.

If the fruit arrives transit-damaged or quality-failed, photograph or video it and send evidence on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery. No physical return is needed. We dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next purchase.

Origin and GI Certification

Alphonso mango holds GI Tag No. 139, covering Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts in coastal Maharashtra. Powle Home Foods sources from 48 coastal villages of Ratnagiri and Devgad — including Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg and Waghotan in Sindhudurg, and Pawas, Golap, Nachane and Mirya in Ratnagiri taluka. The orchards are typically 12–25 years old, sea-facing, selected by Prashant Powle on Brix consistency and alternate-bearing management.

The GI number matters practically. A mango sold as "Alphonso" or "Hapus" without GI certification could come from anywhere. Our Authorised User number AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019) is verifiable at the GI Registry. That is the document that makes the claim real, not marketing copy.

Kesar mango holds GI No. 185, covering Junagadh and Gir in Gujarat. Both varieties sold on alphonsomango.in carry their respective GI documentation.

Why Surat buyers specifically want GI-certified Alphonso

Surat's wholesale markets carry mango labelled "Hapus" that frequently originates outside GI-notified zones. The visual difference at purchase is minimal. The taste difference at the table is not. GI certification is the only paper trail that links the fruit in your box to a specific district, season and growing practice.

How the Mangoes Are Ripened

Hapus Alphonso mangoes ripened on hay bed natural method

Natural hay-bed (locally called Aadi) ripening only. The fruit rests on straw in temperature-controlled rooms at the Mumbai packhouse for 24–48 hours. No ethylene gas chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind.

Carbide ripening is a shortcut that forces colour development before the sugars are ready. The result is a mango that looks ripe but tastes flat. Hay-bed ripening lets the fruit's own ethylene — produced internally — drive the process at its natural pace. The 18–24° Brix range we see in Devgad fruit is a product of that pace, not a laboratory intervention.

We also carry out a controlled hot-water treatment after harvest to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life. Post-harvest cooling at the packhouse follows before the fruit goes into the air-conditioned vehicle. These two steps are standard food-safety practice, not chemical treatment.

Grading, Testing and Quality

Every mango is weighed and graded: Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g), Jumbo (275–300 g). AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each fruit for internal defects including spongy tissue, and for external deformities, before packing.

Pesticide residue testing runs weekly through the season at Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane — NABL-accredited, certificate TC-8284. The April 2025 report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) tested 28 residues. All 28 were within Codex maximum residue limits. Twenty-seven of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue — thiamethoxam — was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say independently tested, all residues within Codex limits. We do not say pesticide-free, because one residue was detected within limits.

Packaging is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box (130 gsm paper, alternate flute orientation) with a 12-slot partition that carries transit pressure instead of the fruit. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve that prevents side bruising, skin friction scars (Alphonso lenticels blacken when rubbed), stem punctures from neighbouring fruit and latex cross-contamination. Six air holes top and bottom keep airflow active during ripening after delivery.

How to Order

  1. Select your grade: Choose Devgad Alphonso (₹1,849 to ₹5,499) or Kesar Mango (₹999 to ₹1,699) on alphonsomango.in, then pick the box size (half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen) that suits your household.
  2. Add to cart and pay: Complete checkout using any standard payment method; the site accepts UPI, cards and net banking.
  3. Dispatch: Once the fruit is ready at the packhouse, we dispatch via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your Surat pin code.

Storage After Delivery

The box arrives at 70–80% ripeness. Leave it at room temperature, out of direct sunlight. The mangoes finish ripening within about three days. Refrigerate only after the fruit is fully ripe — a firm, underripe Alphonso kept cold will not ripen properly and loses its characteristic aroma. Once ripe, the fruit keeps in the refrigerator for two to three days.

One honest limitation: we do not ship fresh Alphonso between July and January. The season ends in June. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then. Aamras and mango pulp are available year-round and are an alternative during the off-season months.

Nutrition Facts Worth Knowing

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. Against the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance — 80 mg/day for adult men, 65 mg/day for adult women — a 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the men's RDA and about 50% of the women's RDA. Those are real numbers from a real government standard, not a general "rich in vitamin C" claim.

Mangiferin, a polyphenol concentrated in Alphonso pulp, showed anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies (Govindappa et al., 2011). That is a cell study, not a clinical trial — the finding is worth noting for context, not as a health claim.

Alphonso puree is suitable for babies from about 6 months as a first fruit introduction. That is a serving suggestion, not medical advice — check with your paediatrician for your child's specific situation.

People Also Ask

What is the cost of 1 kg Alphonso mango?

GI-tagged Devgad Alphonso from alphonsomango.in starts at ₹1,849 for a half-dozen box; see the current price on the product page for each grade and box size. Kesar mango starts at ₹999. Prices vary by grade — Small, Medium, Extra Large or Jumbo — and by season supply.

What is Alphonso mango called in Gujarati?

Alphonso mango is called Hapus in Gujarati, the same word used across coastal Maharashtra. Gujarati speakers in Surat use Hapus interchangeably with the Marathi pronunciation. The GI-tagged variety from Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts is the fruit that earned that name its reputation.

Which Alphonso mango is best in India?

Devgad and Ratnagiri Alphonso, both carrying GI Tag No. 139, are widely regarded as the benchmark. Devgad fruit from sea-facing orchards in Sindhudurg typically sits at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range, giving a richer sweetness. Both are distinct from mangoes sold as Hapus outside GI-notified zones.

Can I buy Alphonso mangoes in the USA?

Fresh GI-tagged Alphonso mangoes cannot legally be shipped as a live perishable parcel to the USA due to USDA phytosanitary restrictions on fresh Indian mangoes. Processed forms such as Aamras and mango pulp face fewer barriers. For fresh Alphonso, buyers based in the USA typically order to an Indian address during the February to June season.
