Alphonso mango in Agartala, Hapus Aam from Ratnagiri and Devgad

The fruit is Alphonso, called Hapus in Maharashtra, from across 55 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt on the Konkan coast. It is sold by the dozen from Rs 1,849, and a dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. Start at the Ratnagiri Alphonso or Devgad Alphonso page, or browse the full mango collection. Prices change with grade and season, so check the product page for today's price.

Agartala is far from the Konkan, and that distance is the reason to read the delivery and ripening sections below before you order, not after.

Choosing a grade and a quantity

Most first-time buyers order one dozen. It is a good size for a household of four to six people eating mangoes for a week, and it keeps you from having a whole crate ripen at once. If you are ordering for a larger family or as a gift to a relative, two dozen is available on the Ratnagiri and Devgad pages.

  • Smaller grades suit daily eating, cutting into cubes and aamras. They are the lowest-priced option, from Rs 1,849 per dozen.
  • Larger grades suit gifting and special occasions, and cost more per dozen. The Ratnagiri listing goes up to Rs 5,399 for the largest option.
  • Not sure? Pick the middle grades. You will see fruit of a consistent size without paying for the largest.

If Alphonso is not what you want, we also list Kesar mango (half-dozen Rs 999, dozen Rs 1,699), Pairi mango from Rs 2,799 per dozen, and Dasheri, Totapuri, Salem and Malgova on their own product pages.

Ratnagiri is a district; Devgad is a taluka in neighbouring Sindhudurg district. Both grow the same variety under the same GI, and we do not rank one above the other. Our Ratnagiri and Devgad Hapus guide explains the two names.

Ripening and storing mangoes in Agartala's humid weather

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011; ethylene up to 100 ppm is the permitted alternative. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller. Our fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, so it is not dropped or shaken from the tree.

Harvest to ripening of Alphonso takes about 15 days, so some fruit can arrive firm. Agartala is warm and humid in the mango months, and humidity is the thing to manage. Fruit left in a closed, damp box will spoil faster than fruit given air.

  • Open the box on the day it arrives and take the mangoes out. Lay them in a single layer on a dry surface.
  • Keep them in a cool, ventilated room, away from direct sun and away from damp corners.
  • Check every morning. A sweet smell near the stalk and a slight give at the shoulder mean ripe.
  • Do not refrigerate firm fruit. Once soft, eat the mango that day or chill it briefly. Wipe the skin dry before it goes in the fridge.
  • If many ripen together, scoop the pulp for aamras and freeze it in small portions.

No home test, including the bucket-of-water test, proves how a mango was ripened; it is a rough clue, not proof. Our guide to ripening Alphonso at home has the full method.

GI tag, season and nutrition

Hapus Aam in Agartala, Alphonso mango from the Devgad and Ratnagiri belt

A Geographical Indication ties a product name to the place it comes from. Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India under GI No. 139, and we hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). Details are on our Brand Facts page. A GI tells you where the fruit is from, not how it was ripened, so ask any seller both questions.

Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Outside the season we do not sell fresh Alphonso, but the Alphonso mango pulp tin (850 g and 3.1 kg, from Rs 590) is available all year. See our Alphonso season guide.

On nutrition, 100 g of raw mango provides about 36 mg of vitamin C, roughly 40% of the Daily Value, plus natural sugars. If you are managing a health condition, ask your doctor how much mango suits you. Our mango nutrition facts page lists the figures.
