Mumbai is the city most people think of when they hear the word Hapus. It is also the city where it is hardest to know what you are buying, because the fruit reaches shops, carts and societies by many routes. This page is a buying guide for a Mumbai household. It covers what a dozen costs, what to ask any seller, and how to order from us. We are AlphonsoMango.in, run by Powle Home Foods from Kurla West in Mumbai.

What Alphonso costs in Mumbai

Alphonso on our store is sold by the dozen. Prices start from Rs 1,849 per dozen, and the largest Ratnagiri option goes up to Rs 5,399. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on the grade, so a small-grade dozen and a large-grade dozen are very different purchases. Compare the grade and the weight of the box, not only the headline price. The product page shows the current price for each option.

What changes the price of a dozen
Factor What it means for you
Grade and size Larger fruit weighs more per dozen and costs more. The weight range is roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg per dozen.
Number of dozens Each dozen is priced on its own product option, so check the option you pick.
Origin We list Ratnagiri Alphonso and Devgad Alphonso separately, each with its own options.
Timing in the season Supply is lighter at the start and end of the season and best from March to May.

We do not give a per-kilogram price, because a mango is sold by the piece and a dozen. If you want a rough idea of what you are getting, use the box weight shown on the page. The wider price picture across India is in our Alphonso price guide, and the local view is in the Hapus price in Mumbai page.

Where Mumbai buyers shop, and what to ask

Mumbai buyers usually have four routes. Neighbourhood fruit sellers are the closest. Wholesale and retail markets offer volume. Society and cart sellers come to your door. Online sellers deliver to the building. Each route can give you good fruit, and each one can give you a poor box. The difference is rarely the route. It is whether the seller can answer a few plain questions.

Questions to put to any mango seller
Question Why it matters
Which variety is it? Hapus, Kesar, Pairi and others look alike in a heap and taste very different.
Where did it grow? Alphonso from the Konkan coast is not the same fruit as a similar mango from elsewhere.
How was it ripened? Ripening method affects flavour, and carbide gas is illegal to use.
Can you show the certificate? A real GI Authorised User certificate has a number you can read.

Colour, smell and a bucket of water are rough clues and nothing more. No single test proves that a mango is Alphonso or that it was ripened safely. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Selling fruit ripened with carbide gas is prohibited in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011, so every seller should be able to say how their fruit was ripened. Our guide to identifying authentic Hapus and carbide-ripened mangoes page list the checks in full. For the local trade itself, see the Mumbai mango market note.

Where our fruit comes from

Devgad Alphonso mango from AlphonsoMango.in, available to Mumbai buyers in season

We source across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra. Ratnagiri is a district, and Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district. Both grow Alphonso, and both are listed on our store. Alphonso from this belt is GI-certified Alphonso (GI No. 139), and we hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). You can read the details on our Brand Facts page, and our guide to the Alphonso GI tag explains what the tag covers.

The fruit is harvested at Brahma Muhurta, the pre-dawn hour, and it is picked by hand with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, so it does not fall to the ground. We started selling mangoes offline in 2019 and online in 2020, and more than 47,000 customers have bought from us across offline, online and marketplace sales.

Ripening and what ripe means

Alphonso mango delivery in Mumbai from Konkan orchards

Alphonso takes about 15 days from harvest to full ripeness, so a box that arrives firm is normal. Our fruit is ripened naturally on hay beds, the traditional Konkan method. Open the box on the day it arrives and lay the fruit in a single layer at room temperature, away from direct sun. A ripe Alphonso gives slightly under gentle pressure and smells sweet near the stalk. Refrigerate only ripe fruit. Do not chill a firm mango, because cold can stop it ripening properly.

Mumbai is warm and humid for most of the mango months, so check the box every day once the fruit starts to colour. If one fruit turns very soft, take it out of the box. Mango is also a good source of vitamin C: 100 g of raw mango provides about 36 mg, roughly 40% of the Daily Value. That is general mango nutrition and not a claim about one variety. If you have diabetes or another condition, ask your doctor how much mango suits you. For the full ripening method, read our guide to ripening Alphonso at home.
