Both carry GI No. 139. The difference is in flavour profile and sourcing village. Mumbai customers buying for personal use often prefer Devgad for its higher Brix. Customers buying for gifting or bulk corporate orders tend to split between the two.

Delivery to Mumbai
Mumbai is our first hub. Fruit harvested in Ratnagiri or Devgad reaches the Mumbai packhouse in about 10–12 hours by air-conditioned vehicle. From there, dispatch by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.
We dispatch fruit at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive transit without bruising. It ripens fully within about three days of delivery. If fruit arrives unripe, keep it at room temperature away from direct sunlight for two to three days. Do not refrigerate unripe fruit; it stops ripening and loses flavour.
Packaging matters here. Each mango travels in a foam-net sleeve inside a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box with a 12-slot partition. The partition carries transit pressure, not the fruit. Six air holes top and bottom allow airflow during the natural ripening that continues after delivery. Alphonso lenticels blacken when rubbed — the foam net prevents that skin friction entirely.
If fruit arrives damaged, photograph it within 24 hours of delivery and contact us. We replace damaged fruit at 100%.
Where the Fruit Comes From
We source from 48 coastal villages of Ratnagiri and Devgad. In Devgad taluka: Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Girye, Kunkeshwar among others. In Ratnagiri taluka: Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mirya, Kasheli and more. Every orchard in our network is sea-facing, typically 12–25 years old, selected by Prashant Powle on Brix consistency, tree longevity and alternate-bearing management.
Harvest is by hand using a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls to the ground. For tall trees, we use an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera. From tree to the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse is about two hours.
Every fruit is then weighed and graded: Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g), Jumbo (275–300 g). AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal defects — including spongy tissue — and external deformities before packing. We do not pack and hope for the best.
We pack at our Malvan packing centre and Devgad packing point, then dispatch via air-conditioned vehicles to Mumbai.
What does GI No. 139 actually mean for you?
GI No. 139 covers Alphonso mango from Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Powle Home Foods holds Authorised User status AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019) for Ratnagiri and AU/6932 for Devgad. Without that registration, a seller cannot legally claim GI-tagged Hapus. When you buy from AlphonsoMango.in, the GI tag is verifiable, not decorative.
How We Ripen the Mangoes
No calcium carbide. No ethylene chambers. No artificial ripening agents of any kind.
At the Mumbai packhouse, fruit spends 24–48 hours on a hay bed (called Aadi ripening locally) in a temperature-controlled room. The hay is not decorative — it regulates moisture, distributes ethylene the fruit produces naturally, and cushions the base of each mango. This is how Konkan farmers have ripened Hapus for generations. We have not replaced it with a faster method, because there is no better one for flavour.
Fruit independently tested by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284; report 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025). All 28 pesticide residues checked were within Codex maximum residue limits. 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits" — not "pesticide-free" — because one residue (thiamethoxam, 0.013 mg/kg against a limit of 0.2 mg/kg) was detected within limits. Carbide presence is not tested by this panel; natural hay-bed ripening is our practice and commitment.
How to Order
- Step 1 — Select your mango and grade. Choose Ratnagiri Alphonso (₹1,849 to ₹5,399) or Devgad Alphonso (₹1,849 to ₹5,499) on the product page, then pick your weight grade — Small, Medium, Extra Large or Jumbo — and box size (half dozen, one dozen or two dozen).
- Step 2 — Add to cart and check out. Enter your Mumbai pin code at checkout; the system confirms serviceability for your pin code. Shipping charges for Mumbai delivery are nominal; in-shop pickup in Mumbai is free.
- Step 3 — We dispatch. Your order ships by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code.
Season and Availability
Alphonso season runs February to June, with peak availability March to May. Outside that window — July through January — no fresh Alphonso is dispatched. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then. We do not cold-store off-season fruit and blend it back; that practice degrades flavour and Brix, and we do not do it.
Within the season, supply tightens in years of erratic weather. In June 2026, Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times on exactly this — weather-driven yield pressure on GI-certified Alphonso growers (read the article). Order early in the season if you want consistent access to Jumbo or Extra Large grades.
Can I order Alphonso mangoes to Mumbai in July?
No. The season ends in June. If you see a seller listing fresh Alphonso in July or August, the fruit is not genuine Hapus from the current season's harvest.
What grade should I order for gifting?
Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g) are the grades most corporate and gift buyers choose. Our data shows 18% of orders are gifts, and those customers consistently pick the larger grades. A two-dozen box of Jumbo Devgad Alphonso is the most common single corporate gift order we receive.
