Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which Mango to Choose

Both carry GI No. 139. The difference is in terroir, not certification. Here is how they compare by the grading table we run every season.

We assumed the Devgad fruit would always be sweeter at harvest. The Brix readings through the 2024 season showed Ratnagiri and Devgad overlapping significantly — the upper-end sweetness of Devgad is real, but not guaranteed on every batch. What is consistent is the flavour complexity that sea-facing orchards produce.

Delivery Across India

Fruit leaves our Malvan packing centre or Devgad packing point within 48–72 hours of harvest. Air-conditioned vehicles carry it to the Mumbai packhouse, where it rests on hay for 24–48 hours of natural ripening. Dispatch follows.

Transit times after dispatch:

  • Metro cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata): 20–24 hours
  • Most other Indian cities: 1–3 days
  • Serviceable pin codes: 15,000–17,000 across India

Courier is BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees — allocated by pin code, not our choice. We dispatch fruit at 70–80% ripeness so it arrives firm and ripens fully within about three days of delivery. Do not refrigerate an unripe fruit. Let it sit at room temperature.

Packaging: every mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm) inside a 12-slot partition inside a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box. The partition carries transit pressure, not the fruit. Six air holes top and bottom keep airflow during the final ripening phase at your home.

If fruit arrives transit-damaged or quality-failed, report within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video on WhatsApp. No physical return is required. We send a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next purchase.

How to Order

  1. Select your mango and grade. Choose Ratnagiri (₹1,849–₹5,399) or Devgad (₹1,849–₹5,499) on the product page, then pick Small, Medium, Extra Large or Jumbo based on how you plan to serve them — larger grades suit gifting, smaller grades are ideal for daily eating.
  2. Choose your box size and add to cart. Options are half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen. Corporate and HoReCa orders from 5 dozen upward can be placed through the site or WhatsApp.
  3. Complete checkout and we dispatch. Your order ships via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code, reaching most Indian cities in 1–3 days.

Where Our Mangoes Come From

Prashant Powle founded AlphonsoMango.in in 2017 and built a sourcing network across 55 villages in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. We work with 100+ partner farmer families whose orchards are typically 12–25 years old, sea-facing, selected on Brix consistency and tree longevity.

Ratnagiri sourcing covers villages including Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad and Mirya in Ratnagiri taluka, and extends to Rajapur, Anjarle, Velneshwar and Kelshi across Rajapur, Lanja and Mandangad talukas. On the Sindhudurg side, Devgad taluka villages include Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Kunkeshwar and Mithbav, among others.

Farmers follow cultivation SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers are applied from flowering through to harvest. Fruit is never shaken from the tree. Every mango is hand-harvested using a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net — the fruit is cut and caught before it can bruise. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera is used.

What does GI No. 139 mean for the buyer?

GI No. 139 covers Alphonso mango grown in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Powle Home Foods holds Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260, issued by the GI Registry (certificate No. 4163, 16 October 2019). That means only fruit grown in those districts and traced through an authorised user can legally carry the GI tag. A mango sold as "Alphonso" without this chain is unverified.

How We Ripen Every Fruit

No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind.

At the Mumbai packhouse, fruit rests on hay beds (the traditional Konkan method, called Aadi ripening) in temperature-controlled rooms for 24–48 hours. This is monitored, not gas-triggered. The same method Konkan farmers have used for generations — we have just added temperature control and a structured timeline so the fruit reaches you at the right stage.

Before packing, every mango is weighed, graded and scanned by an AI/ML-assisted machine that checks for spongy tissue (internal browning) and external deformities. Fruit that fails either check does not ship. Post-harvest, mangoes receive a controlled hot-water treatment to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life.

We also run weekly carbide and pesticide-residue testing through the season at Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284). The April 2025 lab report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) tested 28 pesticide residues. All 28 were within Codex maximum residue limits. Twenty-seven of the 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a permitted limit of 0.200 mg/kg — well within safe limits. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits." We do not say "pesticide-free" because one residue was detected within limits.

Mango Season: When to Order

Alphonso season runs February to June, with peak supply in March, April and May. July to January: we do not sell fresh Alphonso. No cold-store blending, no off-season stock. If you land on this page in August, the honest answer is to pre-order for the following March.

Pre-orders placed before dispatch can be cancelled. Once dispatched, cancellation is not possible — the fruit is already in transit.

Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — a district-level recognition, not an award to AlphonsoMango.in specifically, but it reflects what the Konkan origin produces.

Nutrition in Alphonso Mango

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance (RDA) for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% of the RDA for adult women (65 mg/day).

Mangiferin, a polyphenol found in mango, showed anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies (Govindappa et al., 2011). That is a cell-study finding, not a clinical claim.

Alphonso puree works as a first food for babies from about 6 months — keep it as a serving suggestion and check with your paediatrician if you have specific concerns.

How to Spot a Genuine GI Alphonso Mango

What should a real Alphonso mango look, smell and taste like?

Skin colour ranges from pale yellow to deep saffron-gold when ripe, depending on the orchard's microclimate. Lenticels (the small dots on the skin) should be visible and flat — not blackened, which happens when skin is rubbed in transit. Aroma is strong, sweet and distinctive even before you cut the fruit. Pulp is fibreless, deep orange-yellow, with Brix between 18 and 24°.

A carbide-ripened fruit ripens unevenly — green patches remain near the stem while the rest yellows quickly. Hay-ripened fruit colours uniformly from the shoulder down.

Why does my Alphonso mango have black spots?

Small black specks on the lenticels are usually friction marks from transit, not disease. They do not affect flavour or safety. If you see black spots spreading in a soft, sunken pattern, that is anthracnose — a fungal condition accelerated by condensation. Our foam-net packaging and 5-ply CFB box with six air holes are designed specifically to prevent this by maintaining airflow and absorbing vibration.

What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?

At full ripeness, Devgad Alphonso typically measures at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range. The exact reading varies by orchard, tree age and the week within the season — early-season fruit (March) can run slightly lower than peak-season fruit (late April).

People Also Ask

What are the benefits of eating mango?

Ripe Alphonso pulp gives you roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g, meeting about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 daily requirement for adult men and about 50% for women. It also supplies beta-carotene, dietary fibre, and mangiferin — a polyphenol studied by Govindappa et al., 2011 for anti-inflammatory activity in cell models.

Natural hay-bed ripening, as practised in Konkan, preserves these nutrients without chemical interference — no carbide, no ethylene chambers.

What diseases does mango prevent?

No food prevents disease outright, and no honest seller will claim otherwise. Alphonso mango contains vitamin C, beta-carotene, dietary fibre, and mangiferin. Govindappa et al., 2011 documented mangiferin's anti-inflammatory activity in a cell study. A diet with adequate fruit supports general immunity and digestive health, per standard nutritional guidance.

Eat Alphonso as part of a varied diet, not as a remedy for any specific condition.

Is mango a vegetable or a fruit?

Mango is a fruit — botanically, a drupe with a fleshy mesocarp surrounding a single seed. It grows on Mangifera indica trees and develops from a fertilised flower. In Indian cuisine it is cooked unripe like a vegetable in chutneys and pickles, but that culinary use does not change its botanical classification.

Ratnagiri Alphonso, GI No. 139, is one of the most studied drupes in Indian horticulture.

Is mango healthy or unhealthy?

Alphonso mango is healthy for most people eaten in normal serving sizes. A 100 g serving supplies 30–36 mg of vitamin C, beta-carotene, fibre, and mangiferin, all within roughly 60–70 calories. People managing blood sugar should watch portion size, since ripe Alphonso Brix runs 18–24° — among the highest natural sugar concentrations of any Indian mango variety.

Our mangoes are independently tested by Envirocare Labs (NABL accredited); all 28 residues came within Codex maximum residue limits.
