Delivery Across India
Every box leaves our packing facility at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive transit, ripe within about three days of delivery. Packaging is a 5-ply corrugated CFB box (130 gsm, alternate flute orientation) with a 12-slot partition that absorbs courier pressure instead of passing it to the fruit. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve that prevents skin friction, stem punctures and condensation build-up.
Courier is BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Metro cities receive orders in 20–24 hours. Most other Indian cities receive within 1–3 days. We service 15,000–17,000 pin codes nationally.
Honest limit: Fresh Gir Kesar mango is not available from July to January. Pre-orders open ahead of the February season start.

Origin and GI Certification of Gir Kesar Mango
Gir Kesar holds GI Tag No. 185, covering orchards in Junagadh and the Gir region of Gujarat. The name "Kesar" — Hindi for saffron — refers directly to the pulp colour. When you cut a ripe Gir Kesar, the cross-section is unmistakably deep orange, closer to a ripe papaya than to the pale yellow of most mango varieties.
The fruit has grown in this region for generations. The combination of the Saurashtra peninsula's semi-arid climate, the Gir forest's laterite soil, and the proximity to the Arabian Sea creates conditions that concentrate sugar and aroma in ways no other geography replicates. That's not marketing — it's why the GI system exists.
What the GI Tag Actually Guarantees
GI No. 185 means the mango was grown in the notified Junagadh-Gir zone. It does not guarantee the seller's practices after harvest. At AlphonsoMango.in, Kesar mango is sourced from that GI-notified region and handled under the same post-harvest protocol as our Alphonso: controlled hot-water treatment after harvest, cooling before transport, and natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening at our Mumbai packhouse. No ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no cold-store blending.
We test for pesticide residues weekly through the season. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (Thane, NABL-accredited, certificate TC-8284) conducted a full-panel test on 5 April 2025 (certificate 01/ETHAP2500044): all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 below the limit of quantification at 0.01 mg/kg; thiamethoxam detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a permitted limit of 0.2 mg/kg. Independently tested, all residues within Codex limits.
Taste, Colour and Aroma
Gir Kesar is sweeter than most varieties but carries a mild tartness that keeps it from being cloying. Brix at full ripeness runs 18–24°. The fibre content is low, which means the pulp is almost entirely smooth — suitable for eating straight from the skin or processing into aamras without straining.
The aroma is floral and intense. A box opened in a room becomes noticeable within minutes. This is partly because the fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness and completes ripening at your home — the volatile compounds responsible for fragrance build during that final stage, which is exactly why artificially ripened fruit (carbide-treated, gassed in ethylene chambers) smells flat by comparison.
Why the Pulp Is Saffron-Coloured
The deep orange colour comes from high beta-carotene concentration — the same pigment that colours carrots and, yes, saffron. Kesar's beta-carotene levels are among the highest of any Indian mango variety. The skin stays greenish-yellow even when fully ripe, which confuses buyers who expect a red or orange exterior. Colour of skin is not a reliable ripeness indicator for Kesar. Fragrance and slight give at the shoulders are the right signals.
Ripening and Quality Process
Prashant Powle built the supply chain around one principle: the fruit should ripen the way it has always ripened in Konkan and Saurashtra farmhouses — on a bed of dry hay, in a warm room, with no intervention beyond time and temperature monitoring.
The 24–48 hours our fruit spends at the Mumbai packhouse is natural ripening, not gas-triggered. Temperature-controlled rooms prevent over-ripening while the hay absorbs moisture and allows airflow. Every mango is weighed and graded before packing. AI and ML-assisted machine scanning checks each fruit for internal defects (spongy tissue) and external deformities.
How to Ripen Kesar Mango at Home
Your box arrives at 70–80% ripeness. Keep the mangoes at room temperature, ideally on newspaper or a cloth, not stacked. They will be ready in 1–3 days. You will know by the fragrance from across the room and the slight softening at the base. Refrigerate only after they reach your preferred ripeness — and eat within 2 days of refrigerating.
Nutrition and Health
A 100 g serving of ripe Kesar pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C, meeting about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). These are per-100 g figures — do not scale them to whole-fruit servings without accounting for actual fruit weight.
Mangiferin, a bioactive compound found in mango pulp and peel, has shown anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies (Govindappa et al., 2011). Kesar's deep saffron pulp signals high beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A. Both nutrients matter. Neither makes mango a medicine.
Is Kesar Mango Suitable for Babies?
Alphonso mango purée is commonly used as a first fruit for babies from around 6 months. The same applies to Kesar — the smooth, low-fibre pulp is easy to purée. This is a serving suggestion, not medical advice. Check with your paediatrician before introducing any new food.
Season and Availability
Gir Kesar season runs February to June, with peak availability in April and May. By July, the orchards are finished. We sell no fresh Kesar from July through January — that is a hard limit, not a stock problem. Fruit sold off-season under the Kesar name is either cold-stored (months old) or mislabelled.
Pre-orders open ahead of February each year. If you're reading this outside the season, add your email on the product page to be notified when the next batch is dispatched.

People Also Ask
Which mango is better, Kesar or Alphonso?
Neither is objectively better — they suit different tastes. Alphonso from Ratnagiri is richer, buttery, and intensely sweet, priced from ₹1,849. Gir Kesar from Junagadh is sweet-tart, deeply aromatic, and more affordable at ₹999 upward. Both carry GI certification and both ripen naturally on hay — no carbide.
What is special about Kesar mango?
Gir Kesar's pulp is a deep saffron-orange — the colour comes from beta-carotene levels among the highest of any Indian mango variety. It grows only in Junagadh and the Gir region of Gujarat (GI No. 185), where laterite soil and a semi-arid climate concentrate sugar and aroma in ways no other geography replicates.
Which Kesar mango is best?
GI-tagged Gir Kesar from Junagadh and the Gir region of Gujarat is the benchmark. Fruit grown outside this notified zone cannot legally carry the GI No. 185 tag. Within that zone, quality varies by orchard, harvest timing, and post-harvest handling — hay-bed ripening, no carbide, and Brix of 18–24° at full ripeness are the markers to look for.
Which is the sweetest mango in the world?
Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad is widely regarded as among the sweetest commercially grown mangoes, reaching 18–24° Brix at full ripeness. Gir Kesar from Junagadh hits the same Brix range but carries a mild tartness that balances the sweetness. No single variety holds a verified global title — Brix and flavour perception both vary by season and orchard.
