Everything sits in the mango collection. Fresh mango is sold in season only, and the 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027.

Indian mango varieties: how they differ

India produces roughly 43% of the world's mangoes (FAO figures that also include mangosteens and guavas), about 26 million tonnes in 2023. With that scale comes a long list of named varieties, each tied to a region and a taste. This table covers the ones we list.

Indian mango varieties on AlphonsoMango.in
Variety Where it is associated with What buyers look for
Alphonso (Hapus) Konkan coast of Maharashtra; our fruit is from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt Saffron-orange, non-fibrous flesh and a strong scent
Kesar Gir region of Gujarat Orange pulp and a sweet, aromatic taste
Pairi Maharashtra and the west coast A west-coast mango, sold by the dozen
Dasheri Uttar Pradesh Soft, sweet flesh and an elongated shape
Totapuri South India Firm flesh and a beak-shaped tip, often used for pulp and juice

No single mango is best for everyone. Alphonso is the one most buyers mean when they say premium. Kesar is a good second box. Totapuri and the other varieties are everyday fruit. If you are choosing for a gift or for aamras, our Indian mango varieties guide and how many mango varieties are in India go through more of them.

Why we put Alphonso first

Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India under GI No. 139, and we hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). The name Alphonso comes from Afonso de Albuquerque. Fruits generally weigh 150 to 300 g. Because Indian-group mangoes are monoembryonic, a named variety like Alphonso is propagated by grafting.

We source across 55 villages of that belt on the Konkan coast, and the fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net. Ratnagiri is a district; Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district. They are the same variety under the same GI, and we do not rank one above the other. Our Ratnagiri and Devgad Hapus guide explains the two names.

Kesar is a different mango, and we make no GI claim for it or for any other variety on this page except Alphonso.

Delivery and what to expect in the box

We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Orders received before 1 PM are dispatched the same day. Check your PIN code at checkout. We do not promise a delivery day for a named city, and a perishable box needs someone to receive it. Use an address where a person will be present on a working day.

  • Fruit may arrive firm. Harvest to ripening of Alphonso takes about 15 days. Keep mangoes at room temperature in a single layer and eat each as it softens.
  • Do not refrigerate firm fruit. Cold stops ripening. A sweet smell at the stalk and a slight give at the shoulder mean ripe.
  • Damage: report it within 24 hours of delivery to support@alphonsomango.in or 8369048029.

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller. See also our guide to ripening Alphonso at home.

How to choose a seller when you buy Indian mango online

A few questions are fair to ask any seller. We answer them for ourselves above, so you can compare.

  • Which variety, and where was it grown? A good listing names both. For Alphonso, ask for the GI Authorised User number.
  • How is it ripened? Carbide is prohibited in India. Ask the seller to say how they ripen.
  • How does delivery work? Expect a courier name and a PIN-code check, not a promised hour.
  • What is the season? Fresh Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. Fresh Alphonso is not harvested in October, so ask any seller offering it what exactly they mean.
  • Who do I call if something is wrong? Our contact for support is support@alphonsomango.in or 8369048029.

No home test proves how a mango was ripened. The bucket-of-water test is a rough clue, not proof. For a longer guide, read how to identify carbide-ripened mangoes. For nutrition, 100 g of raw mango provides about 36 mg of vitamin C, roughly 40% of the Daily Value; that is a generic mango figure, not Alphonso-specific.

Using the fruit: fresh, aamras and the off-season

Most of our customers eat the first box plain, cut into cheeks and scored. Aamras is the next most common use: scoop the pulp, blend it briefly with a little milk or nothing at all, and chill it. Our aamras recipe has quantities, and the mango milkshake recipe and mango kulfi recipe use the same pulp.

Outside the season we do not sell fresh Alphonso, so for these dishes the pulp tin is the practical choice. It is not a fresh fruit, and we do not pretend it is; it is a good base when you want the flavour in October or January.
