What is Kesar mango
Kesar is a mango variety grown in the Gir region of Gujarat, around Junagadh. The name means saffron and refers to the deep orange colour of the pulp. It is said to have been grown in 1931 by the Junagadh Wazir Sale Bhai, and to have been known as Kesar since 1934, when the Nawab of Junagadh remarked on its orange pulp. Buyers also search for it as Gir Kesar, Kesar keri and Kesar aam. These are the same fruit under different names.
In our range it sits beside Alphonso. Alphonso comes from the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, Kesar from Gujarat. They are different mangoes with different uses, and we sell each on its own product page.
Where Kesar comes from

The Gir region lies in the Saurashtra part of Gujarat, and Kesar is the mango most closely associated with it. Our Kesar comes from Gujarat. We do not make claims about specific orchards or farms for it, and you should be wary of any page that names an orchard without showing proof. If origin matters to you, write to us before you order and ask.
Fresh Kesar is sold in boxes, and the box size changes the price. The Kesar mango page lists the options. Check the page for the current price and availability before you plan an order.
How Kesar tastes and how to use it
Kesar pulp is thick, deep orange and aromatic. It is sweet with a light tang, and many people find it softer in flavour than Alphonso. That is a matter of taste and not a ranking. Because the pulp is thick, Kesar is a popular choice for aamras, milkshakes and lassi, and for desserts such as shrikhand and kulfi where a rich colour matters.
Here are the uses we hear about most:
- Aamras. Blend the ripe pulp with a pinch of cardamom and serve with puri or chapati. Our aamras recipe has the method.
- Milkshake and lassi. The thick pulp needs little straining. See mango lassi and mango milkshake.
- Desserts. Kulfi, shrikhand and ice cream take the colour well. Try amrakhand.
- Eating fresh. Cut a fully ripe fruit into cubes and chill briefly.
Kesar compared with Alphonso
People often ask which is better. The honest answer is that they are different. The table sets out the plain differences.
| Point | Kesar | Alphonso |
|---|---|---|
| Region | Gir region, Gujarat | Konkan coast, Maharashtra |
| Pulp | Thick, deep orange | Rich, creamy, non-fibrous |
| Common use | Aamras, milkshakes, desserts | Eating fresh, desserts, gifting |
| Our price (from) | Rs 999 per box | Rs 1,849 per dozen |
If you cannot decide, order a box of each and compare them yourself. Our Ratnagiri Alphonso page has the Alphonso side, and the guide to identifying Alphonso covers that fruit in detail.

How to buy authentic Kesar
"Authentic" is a word every seller uses, so ask for specifics. These questions work for any seller, including us.
- Which region did the fruit come from, and which season does it belong to?
- How was it ripened? We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Ask the same question about any Kesar you are offered.
- What does the price cover: a box, a dozen or a kilo, and how heavy is it?
- Which courier delivers it and is your PIN code served?
- Whom do you contact if the box arrives damaged, and by when?
Selling fruit ripened with carbide gas is prohibited in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. Colour and the bucket test are rough clues, not proof. Our guide to carbide-ripened mangoes covers what each test can and cannot tell you. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller.
Price and season
Kesar boxes start from Rs 999 on our store. Prices are "from" prices and the product page shows the current figure for each box size. We do not quote a per-kilo price, because box weights differ.
Kesar is a seasonal fruit. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027, and fresh mango from us is sold only in season. If a seller offers fresh Kesar for delivery well outside the season, ask where it was stored. Our mango season guide has the calendar for Alphonso, which is useful as a general reference. For Kesar availability, the product page is the source of truth.
Outside the season, the Alphonso Mango Pulp Tin is available all year, from Rs 590. It is Alphonso pulp and not Kesar, so choose it only if Alphonso flavour is fine for your recipe.
Delivery and ripening
We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Check your PIN code at checkout. We do not promise a delivery time for any named city. A box may arrive firm, so keep the fruit at room temperature, away from direct sun, and in a single layer. Refrigerate only fruit that is fully ripe, and eat it soon. Report any damage within 24 hours of delivery by writing to support@alphonsomango.in or calling 8369048029.
For more on the process, read our mango delivery guide and guide to ripening mangoes at home. If you want Kesar and Alphonso together, add both to the cart and check your PIN code once.
Kitchen uses beyond aamras
Ripe Kesar also works in smoothies, mango chia pudding and mango shrikhand. For raw-mango dishes, firmer fruit is better than fully ripe fruit. Our mango smoothie and mango recipes pages give more ideas. If you are buying for a gift, see our gifting page, and for restaurant or hotel needs write to us with your quantity and dates.
