What "aam mango" means, and what we sell

Aam is the Hindi word for mango, so "aam mango" is simply the word in two languages. Most people who type it are looking for a particular fruit: Hapus, the Alphonso mango of the Konkan coast. We are Powle Home Foods in Mumbai, and we run AlphonsoMango.in. We have sold mangoes since 2019, online since 2020, and have served 47,000+ customers, including offline and marketplace sales.

Our main fruit is Alphonso from across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt. Alongside it we list Kesar from Gujarat, Pairi, and northern and southern varieties such as Dasheri, Totapuri, Salem and Malgova on their own product pages. All fresh mangoes are seasonal. Alphonso pulp tins are the one mango product we can send in any month.

This page explains how to choose between Ratnagiri and Devgad fruit, what the GI tag means, how delivery works, how to ripen the fruit at home, and how to order. Browse every listing on our mango collection.

Ratnagiri or Devgad aam: how to choose

Ratnagiri is a district on the Konkan coast; Devgad is a taluka in neighbouring Sindhudurg district. Both grow the same variety, Alphonso, and both fall under the same GI. We do not rank one above the other. Buyers usually choose by habit, by the name they grew up hearing, or by which listing has the size they want.

A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. Smaller fruit suits daily eating and aamras; larger fruit suits gifting. Our Ratnagiri and Devgad Hapus guide goes into more detail without picking a winner.

Why the GI tag matters when you buy aam online

A Geographical Indication ties a product name to the place it comes from. Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India under GI No. 139. We hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). The number is listed on our Brand Facts page, and you can ask any seller for theirs.

The name Alphonso comes from Afonso de Albuquerque; mango grafting was introduced in Portuguese Goa by Jesuit missionaries. Mango cultivars of the Indian group are monoembryonic, so a named variety such as Alphonso is propagated by grafting, not from seed. Alphonso fruits generally weigh 150 to 300 g, and the pulp is described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous.

What a GI certificate does not do is tell you how the fruit was ripened or handled after harvest. For that, ask the seller directly. Our guide to the Alphonso mango GI tag explains the registry record, and how to identify an Alphonso mango lists what to look for.

How we ripen aam, and how to finish it at home

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011; ethylene up to 100 ppm is the permitted alternative. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller. Our fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, so it is not dropped or shaken from the tree.

Harvest to ripening of Alphonso takes about 15 days, so a box can arrive with some fruit still firm. That is normal. Keep the mangoes at room temperature, away from direct sun, and check them daily.

  • Ripe signs: a sweet smell near the stalk and a slight give when pressed gently at the shoulder.
  • Do not refrigerate unripe fruit. Cold slows ripening and dulls the aroma.
  • Once soft, eat the mango soon or chill it briefly. Cut fruit keeps best in a closed container in the fridge.

No home test, including the bucket-of-water test, proves how a mango was ripened; it is a rough clue, not proof. Our guide on ripening Alphonso at home has the full method.
