What Is Aam Ki Peti?

"Aam ki peti" means a mango box in Hindi. In English, the phrase translates directly to "mango box" or "mango crate." Farmers in Konkan Maharashtra have used this term for generations. A peti is not a loose purchase by the kilogram. It is a full box — a complete unit. Buyers order a peti when they want enough fruit to last a family a week, to gift relatives, or to process into Aamras and mango pulp.

Weight and Count of a Mango Peti

A standard aam ki peti contains a net weight of approximately 12–13 kg of Alphonso mangoes. Fruit count depends on grade:

  • Small grade (200–250 g each): 20–24 mangoes per peti
  • Medium grade (250–300 g each): 16–20 mangoes per peti
  • Large grade (300–400 g each): 12–16 mangoes per peti

Export-quality Devgad petis sometimes carry fewer, larger fruit. Each fruit is individually wrapped in paper or hay to prevent bruising in transit.

What does "aam peti" mean in English?

"Aam peti" in English means "mango box" or "mango crate." The word aam is Hindi for mango; peti is Hindi for box or case. The full phrase aam ki peti means "box of mangoes."

How many dozen mangoes are in one peti?

A standard Alphonso peti holds 1–2 dozen mangoes (12–24 pieces) depending on individual fruit size and grade. Large-grade fruit yields closer to one dozen; small-grade fruit yields closer to two dozen per peti.

Season and Availability

Alphonso mango season runs from mid-March to late June each year. The first harvest from Devgad — a village like Hadi near the Arabian Sea coast — typically arrives by the last week of March. Ratnagiri fruit peaks in April and May. By late June, trees have shed their fruit and the orchards are quiet until the following spring.

AlphonsoMango.in does not sell aam ki peti from July to February. No fruit is available. This is an honest limit. Off-season orders are taken as pre-orders and fulfilled when the first boxes arrive the following March.

When does the Alphonso mango season start?

The Alphonso mango season starts in mid-March for early Devgad batches. Ratnagiri harvest peaks through April and May. The season ends by late June.

Natural Hay-Bed Ripening

Natural hay-bed ripening of Alphonso aam ki peti — carbide free

Prashant Powle and the Powle Home Foods sourcing team insist on one practice above all: no calcium carbide. Carbide-ripened mangoes ripen fast but taste flat. The saffron-yellow colour looks the same. The aroma and Brix do not.

Every peti from AlphonsoMango.in is ripened on a traditional hay bed. Harvested fruit rests on dry rice straw or hay inside wooden crates at ambient temperature. Ethylene released naturally by the fruit triggers even ripening over 3–5 days. The result is a Brix reading of 18–24 °, a deep saffron-gold skin, and a fibre-free pulp that melts on the tongue.

Carbide-ripened mangoes often show white patches near the stem, taste watery at the core, and ripen unevenly. Hay-ripened Alphonso ripens from the inside out with a uniform colour and a clean, sweet finish.

How can I tell if my Alphonso was ripened with carbide?

Signs of carbide ripening include a uniformly yellow skin that is pale or greenish near the stem, watery or tasteless flesh, and no floral aroma. Naturally ripened Alphonso shows a deep golden-saffron colour with a pronounced sweet fragrance even before cutting.

Nutrition and Health Benefits

A 100 g serving of Alphonso mango pulp delivers approximately:

  • Vitamin C: 36 mg (40% of daily requirement)
  • Vitamin A: 54 µg RAE
  • Natural sugars: 14–16 g (from glucose, fructose, sucrose)
  • Dietary fibre: 1.6 g
  • Calories: ~60 kcal
  • Potassium: 168 mg

Alphonso mango supports immune function through its Vitamin C content. Beta-carotene — the pigment behind the deep yellow colour — converts to Vitamin A and supports eye health. The prebiotic fibre feeds gut bacteria. Mangiferin, a polyphenol concentrated in the peel and seed kernel, shows antioxidant activity in peer-reviewed studies.

Is Alphonso mango good for digestion?

Yes. Alphonso mango contains amylases — enzymes that break down complex starches into simple sugars — and dietary fibre that supports healthy bowel movement. The fruit is easiest to digest when fully ripe.

How to Verify Authenticity

Genuine GI-tagged Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad carries documentation. AlphonsoMango.in operates under GI Authorisation AU/5974, GI No. 139, Registry Certificate 4163, issued 16 October 2019. This authorisation is specific to Powle Home Foods. No other seller can legally use this authorisation number.

Check for three things when you buy aam ki peti online:

  1. GI tag certificate or authorisation number displayed on the seller's page
  2. FSSAI licence number (ours: 10020022011783)
  3. APEDA registration (ours: 225579) if purchasing export-quality boxes

Sellers without these credentials cannot guarantee the origin or safety of the fruit. Village-level sourcing from named locations — Hadi, Devgad taluka; Rajapur and Lanja in Ratnagiri — is traceable. Generic "Alphonso" sold without origin proof is often from other regions and ripened with carbide.
