Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which Should You Order?

Both Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso carry GI No. 139. The difference is subtle but consistent — our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows north India leans Ratnagiri, while Mumbai buyers lean Devgad. Devgad fruit typically sits at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range, with a slightly richer pulp-to-fibre ratio. Ratnagiri fruit tends toward a brighter, sharper aroma. Neither is a lesser choice; they are different expressions of the same GI.

Delivery Across India

Fruit leaves our Malvan packing centre or Devgad packing point within 48–72 hours of harvest. It travels by air-conditioned vehicle to the Mumbai packhouse, spends 24–48 hours on a hay bed to reach 70–80% ripeness, then ships by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Metro cities receive their order in 20–24 hours. Most other Indian cities take 1–3 days. We reach 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes.

Every box is a top-and-bottom 5-ply corrugated fibreboard (CFB) unit with 130 gsm paper, reinforced corners, a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure instead of the fruit, and six air holes top and bottom. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm, length 100–120 mm) on a hay/straw bed. The foam net prevents lenticel blackening from skin friction — a specific failure mode for Alphonso — and stops latex cross-contamination between fruit.

We do not sell or dispatch fresh Alphonso from July to January. If you land here outside the season, pre-order is open and we dispatch from the first availability in February.

How to Order

  1. Step 1 — Select grade and quantity. Choose Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g). Pick a half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen box. Devgad Alphonso runs ₹1,849–₹5,499; Kesar runs ₹999–₹1,699. If you are unsure which grade to start with, most first-time buyers choose Medium — it gives the best ratio of fruit count to pulp volume.
  2. Step 2 — Add to cart and check out. The site confirms your pin code is serviceable before payment. Corporate or HoReCa orders from 5 dozen (roughly 15–20 kg) upward can be placed through the B2B inquiry on the site.
  3. Step 3 — We dispatch. Your order ships by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code, within the 48–72-hour harvest-to-dispatch window. Tracking is shared on confirmation. If fruit arrives transit-damaged, photograph or video it and send us the evidence on WhatsApp within 24 hours — we dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account. No physical return is required.

Where These Mangoes Actually Come From

Prashant Powle founded AlphonsoMango.in in 2017 and built sourcing relationships across 55 named villages in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. The Ratnagiri villages include Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Mirya and Kalbadevi, among others. The Devgad side covers Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Kunkeshwar and Mithbav, among 24 Devgad-taluka villages. Malvan and Vengurla talukas add Achara, Tondavali and Shiroda.

We work with 100+ partner farmer families. Their orchards are typically 12–25 years old, sea-facing, selected for Brix consistency and careful alternate-bearing management. Every harvest uses a Nutan/Zela pole with a catching net — the tree is never shaken and fruit never falls to the ground. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera guides the cut. One bruised shoulder from an uncontrolled drop can trigger spongy tissue, so this is not optional.

The Farmers Behind Each Box

Cultivation follows strict SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers are applied from flowering to harvest. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (Thane, NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284) tested fruit from the 2025 season: certificate 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025. All 28 residues were within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a permitted limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say independently tested and all residues within Codex limits. We do not say pesticide-free, because one residue was found, within limits.

How We Ripen the Fruit

Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is natural ripening on hay, monitored for temperature and fruit-feel, not gas-triggered.

Fruit leaves us at 70–80% ripeness, firm enough to survive transit. It completes ripening within about three days of delivery. That firmness on arrival is intentional, not a defect — a fully ripe Alphonso cannot travel 1,200 km without damage.

Post-harvest, fruit goes through a controlled hot-water treatment to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life, followed by cooling at the packhouse before loading. The air-conditioned vehicle from Ratnagiri or Devgad to Mumbai takes 10–12 hours. Total time from tree to your door: roughly 4–5 days, of which 48–72 hours is under our direct control at the packhouse.

How to Spot Genuine GI-Tagged Alphonso

What does GI No. 139 mean for a buyer?

GI No. 139 means the fruit was grown in Ratnagiri or Sindhudurg districts. The GI Registry Certificate (No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019) authorises Powle Home Foods as Authorised User AU/5974/GI/139/260 to carry that mark. Sellers without an Authorised User number cannot legally label their fruit as GI-certified Alphonso — ask for it before you buy from any source.

What a ripe Alphonso looks and smells like

Colour shifts from green-yellow to deep golden-yellow. The lenticels (small dots on the skin) turn from white to golden. The aroma is unmistakable — a floral, slightly resinous sweetness that rises from the stem end first. At 18–24° Brix, the pulp is thick, almost jellylike near the seed, with minimal fibre. A fruit that smells of nothing and tastes sharp is either Ratnagiri-labelled but not Konkan-grown, or was ripened under carbide.

AI/ML grading before packing

Every fruit is weighed and graded. An AI/ML-assisted machine scanning system checks each mango for internal deformities (including spongy tissue) and external blemishes before packing. A fruit that clears visual inspection but fails internal scan is removed. This is why our spongy-tissue complaint rate is low enough to be noteworthy — spongy tissue is the single most common quality complaint with Alphonso, and it is invisible from the outside without scanning.

Nutrition You Can Cite

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. Per the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA — 80 mg/day for adult men, 65 mg/day for adult women — a 100 g serving covers about 40–45% of the daily requirement for men and about 50% for women. Mangiferin, the xanthone present in mango pulp and peel, showed anti-inflammatory activity in a cell study (Govindappa et al., 2011). We do not overstate this: a cell study is a cell study, not a clinical trial.

Alphonso pulp is suitable as a first fruit for babies from about 6 months — this is a serving suggestion, not medical advice. Check with your paediatrician if you have a specific concern.

How much does an Alphonso mango cost?

Devgad Alphonso mangoes at AlphonsoMango.in are priced between ₹1,849 and ₹5,499 per box, depending on grade and quantity. Grade runs from Small (150–180 g) to Jumbo (275–300 g). What is the price of 1 kg of Alphonso mango?

AlphonsoMango.in sells Devgad Alphonso in box quantities — half dozen, one dozen or two dozen — priced ₹1,849 to ₹5,499 per box, not by the kilogram. A Medium-grade box holds fruit at 180–225 g each, so a dozen gives roughly 2.2–2.7 kg. Per-kilogram price depends on the grade and box size you choose.

Most first-time buyers find the Medium grade the best starting point for pulp volume per fruit.

How to identify original Alphonso mango?

Original Alphonso mango carries a GI tag number 139, issued to Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Look for a thin, smooth skin that turns golden-yellow without green patches when ripe, a saffron-orange pulp with almost no fibre, and a Brix reading of 18 to 24 degrees. The aroma is immediate — sharp, floral, unmistakable at arm's length.

A GI-authorised seller like AlphonsoMango.in displays a valid Authorised User certificate (AU/5974/GI/139/260) — ask for it if buying from any vendor during the February-to-June season.
