Ratnagiri vs Devgad Alphonso: Which Should You Choose?
Both carry GI No. 139. Both ripen on hay, never in a gas chamber. The difference is orchard geography, and that geography shows up in flavour and, season to season, in Brix. Our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers tells one clear story: north India leans Ratnagiri, Mumbai leans Devgad.

First-time buyer? Ratnagiri Medium is the safest starting point. The flavour is classic Hapus and the grade hits the sweet spot between size and value. For a detailed side-by-side, read our Devgad vs Ratnagiri Hapus comparison.
Origin and the GI Tag: What It Actually Guarantees
Ratnagiri district stretches 8,208 sq km along Maharashtra's Konkan coast. Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg Alphonso reach 18–24° Brix at full ripeness, a level no inland orchard consistently replicates. That is why GI No. 139 is geographically locked to Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. The tag cannot travel with a graft.
Prashant Powle built the sourcing network village by village from 2017. By the 2020 commercial season, Powle Home Foods held GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019 (GI No. 139, Authorised User AU/5974/GI/139/260).
Today we source across 55+ named villages in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, including the 14 Ratnagiri taluka villages listed above.
What does the GI tag actually guarantee a buyer?
A GI tag is a production-origin guarantee, not a quality grade. It confirms the fruit grew within the mapped GI zone. What it does not check is every box's Brix or ripening method.
That is where the Authorised User registration matters: Powle Home Foods is audited as an authorised user, which means the certification body can inspect our sourcing and packing practices. A seller without an AU number is selling outside the legal GI framework, regardless of what the packaging says.
One more thing worth knowing: Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at the One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024. That is a district-product award recognising the fruit's regional significance, not an award to any individual brand.
How to Identify Authentic Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango
Four things separate genuine Ratnagiri Alphonso from ordinary mangoes sold under that name.
- Skin colour: Ripe Ratnagiri Alphonso is deep golden yellow with a saffron-orange blush toward the stem. The lenticels (small dots on the skin) are visible but clean. Pale or unevenly green patches after three days at room temperature suggest under-ripe or non-Alphonso fruit.
- Aroma: Unmistakable at the stem end: floral, honey-like, with a faint citrus edge. If you smell nothing at the stem, the fruit was either not Alphonso or it was carbide-ripened before its internal sugars had time to develop.
- Fibre: True Alphonso is fibreless. Run a spoon through the pulp. Threads clinging to the stone mean a different variety.
- Documentation: Ask for the GI Authorised User number. Ours is AU/5974/GI/139/260. Without a valid AU number on the invoice, the GI claim is unverified. Our FSSAI licence is 10020022011783 and our APEDA registration is 225579.
Ripening, Harvesting, and Independent Testing
We use natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind.
The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is monitored ripening on hay. The straw regulates moisture and the ethylene the fruit itself releases, exactly how Konkan farmers have ripened Hapus for generations.
Carbide-ripened fruit often shows uneven softening and a yellowed skin, with the flavour flat where hay-ripened Alphonso smells of floral honey. You can tell by smell alone at the stem end.
How the fruit is harvested
Every Alphonso is hand-harvested with a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. The fruit never falls. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera lets the grower watch the cut on a screen and position the net before the stem is severed. Any drop bruises the shoulder, and a bruised shoulder develops spongy tissue faster in transit.
After harvest in a village like Pawas or Golap, the fruit reaches our Ratnagiri packhouse in about two hours. Post-harvest cooling happens there before an air-conditioned vehicle carries the fruit to Mumbai in 10–12 hours. Hay-bed ripening at the Mumbai packhouse runs 24–48 hours. Total harvest-to-dispatch: 48–72 hours.
Independent lab testing
Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (Thane, NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284) tested our fruit on 5 April 2025. Certificate 01/ETHAP2500044 covered 28 residues. All 28 were within Codex maximum residue limits. Twenty-seven of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). Thiamethoxam came in at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We test weekly through the season.
We say 'independently tested, all residues within Codex limits' and not 'pesticide-free,' because one residue was detected within limits. We will not claim otherwise.
How Does Delivery of Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango Work?
Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness, firm enough to survive transit and fully ripe within about three days of delivery. Metro cities typically receive orders in 20–24 hours. Most other Indian cities receive within 1–3 days across 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes.
Courier depends on your pin code: BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees. We do not default to a single courier. The assignment is pin-code driven.
Packaging is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box (130 gsm, alternate flute orientation) with reinforced corners, a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure, and six air holes for airflow.
Every mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm) on a hay bed. The net stops the one thing Alphonso skin cannot tolerate: friction. Alphonso lenticels blacken when rubbed. The sleeve prevents that, and the diamond mesh keeps condensation from triggering anthracnose.
If fruit arrives damaged, photograph it and contact us via WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery. We replace damaged fruit with a fresh dispatch or credit your account for the next purchase. No physical return required. For more on how we handle orders across India, see our guide on Alphonso mango delivery options.

Nutrition in a 100 g Serving
Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. Against the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA of 80 mg/day for adult men and 65 mg/day for adult women, a 100 g serving provides about 40–45% of the daily requirement for men and about 50% for women.
Mangiferin, a xanthonoid found in mango pulp and peel, was studied by Govindappa et al. (2011) for anti-inflammatory activity in cell models. That is a cell study and does not confirm clinical outcomes in humans.
What it confirms is that the phytochemical is present and biologically active at the cellular level. Alphonso puree is used as a first food for babies from around 6 months, per our product FAQ. Keep that as a serving suggestion and consult a paediatrician before introducing any new food.
Storage After Delivery
Fruit arrives at 70–80% ripeness. Leave it at room temperature, on the hay or out of the box, for two to three days. Cold stops the ripening process and flattens the flavour, so do not refrigerate unripe Alphonso. Once the fruit is soft to a gentle press and the aroma is strong at the stem, refrigerate and eat within two days.
One honest limitation: we do not sell fresh Alphonso between July and January. The season ends in June. Any site advertising fresh Ratnagiri Alphonso in August or December is selling frozen, cold-stored or non-Alphonso fruit. We sell Alphonso mango pulp and Aamras year-round. The pulp is processed at peak ripeness, not reconstituted from frozen concentrate.
Why Are Ratnagiri Alphonso Mangoes So Expensive?
Every step from orchard to box adds real cost. Hand harvesting with a Nutan pole, post-harvest cooling, 10–12 hours of air-conditioned transport to Mumbai, 24–48 hours of monitored hay-bed ripening, AI/ML-assisted grading that checks each fruit for internal spongy tissue and external deformities, foam-net sleeves, and 5-ply courier packaging: none of that is cheap.
The narrow February–June season leaves no room to spread fixed costs across twelve months. And the GI tag matters: fruit sourced from Ratnagiri taluka villages by a GI Authorised User commands a premium that unverified fruit sold under the same name simply does not. That premium is the price of knowing exactly where your mango grew.
Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 as a GI-certified grower and trader on the season's weather and yield challenges. Read the article here.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes online?
Ratnagiri Alphonso on alphonsomango.in was last listed from ₹1849, varying by grade (Small to Jumbo) and box size (half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen). Prices are set each season and may change. The fruit ships February to June only.
When is the Ratnagiri Alphonso mango season?
The season runs February to June, with peak availability March to May. No fresh Alphonso (Hapus, Haapus) ships July to January. Pre-season bookings open before February each year. Alphonso pulp and Aamras are available year-round.
How long does delivery of Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes take?
Metro cities typically receive orders in 20–24 hours. Most other Indian cities receive within 1–3 days across 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes, via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code.
How do I know the Ratnagiri Alphonso I am buying is authentic?
Ask for the seller's GI Authorised User number. Ours is AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139, Registry Certificate 4163, issued 16 October 2019). Without a valid AU number, the GI claim is unverified, regardless of what the packaging says.
Is Alphonso the best mango in the world?
Alphonso consistently tops global rankings for sweetness, aroma and fibre-free texture. Ratnagiri Alphonso, hay-ripened to 18–24° Brix, is exported to the US, UK, UAE, Singapore and Japan. GI No. 139 protects that geography. It is not a label any seller can print freely.
Can I buy Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes outside India?
AlphonsoMango.in ships within India only, covering 15,000–17,000 pin codes. Fresh Alphonso faces strict import regulations in markets like the USA. If you are overseas, we recommend gifting a box to family in India during the March–June season.
