Both carry GI No. 139. The difference is terroir — coastal salinity, soil type, and altitude shift the sugar profile and skin colour enough that experienced buyers can tell them apart by scent alone.

Delivery Across India
Every box leaves the Mumbai packhouse at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to handle transit, ready to eat within about three days of delivery. The fruit reaches 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes across India.
Packaging: a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box (130 gsm, alternate flute orientation), 12-slot partition that carries the transit pressure instead of the fruit, six air holes for airflow, and every mango in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm). The sleeve stops lenticel blackening from friction — Alphonso skin is that sensitive.
Transit by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Metro cities typically 20–24 hours. Most other locations 1–3 days.
We do not dispatch fresh Alphonso mangoes from July to January. That is the honest limit of the season, and no amount of cold storage changes what the tree does.
How to Order
- Step 1 — Select your variety and grade. Choose Ratnagiri Alphonso (₹1,849–₹5,399) or Devgad Alphonso (₹1,849–₹5,499) on the product page. Pick the grade — Small, Medium, Extra Large or Jumbo — and box size (half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen).
- Step 2 — Add to cart and check out. Enter your delivery pin code at checkout; the system confirms serviceability and assigns the right courier from BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees.
- Step 3 — We dispatch and you track. Your order ships within the season window (February to June). You receive a tracking number by SMS or email. Delivery takes 1–3 days to most Indian cities.
Transit damage or quality failure? Report within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video on WhatsApp. We send a fresh replacement or credit your account — no physical return needed.
Where Hapus Mangoes Come From
Hapus is the Marathi name for Alphonso mango. The variety takes its Portuguese-derived name from Afonso de Albuquerque, the 16th-century viceroy who is credited with introducing grafted mango cultivation to Goa and Konkan.
GI No. 139 covers Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts in coastal Maharashtra. The Sahyadri ranges to the east, the Arabian Sea to the west, and laterite soil between them — that combination of salinity, drainage and humidity is what makes a Konkan Alphonso taste the way it does. You cannot replicate it by planting the same graft in Nashik or Pune.
We source from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri taluka, Rajapur, Lanja and Mandangad talukas in Ratnagiri district, and Devgad, Malvan and Vengurla talukas in Sindhudurg district. Orchards in our network are typically 12–25 years old, sea-facing, managed by 100+ partner farmer families who follow fixed cultivation SOPs covering natural sprays and fertilisers from flowering to harvest.
How the Fruit Is Harvested
Every mango is hand-harvested using a Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net and a cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For tall trees, Prashant Powle's team uses an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera — a small but significant detail that eliminates the bruising at the shoulder that triggers spongy tissue.
From tree to the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse takes about two hours. Then post-harvest cooling, 10–12 hours by air-conditioned transport to Mumbai, 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening, then dispatch. Total time from harvest to your door: roughly 48–72 hours to dispatch, plus 1–3 days transit.
How to Identify Genuine Hapus Mangoes
The market is full of mangoes sold as Alphonso that are not. Here is what genuine Konkan Hapus looks like and smells like:
- Colour: A saffron-yellow skin with a green tinge near the stem at near-ripe stage. Uniform artificial yellow (especially at the base) is a common sign of carbide ripening.
- Aroma: Strong, sweet fragrance even before cutting — detectable from the moment you open the box.
- Skin: Smooth, thin, with visible lenticels (small dots). The skin should not feel rubbery or have an ammonia scent.
- Pulp: Deep saffron-orange, fibreless, with Brix between 18 and 24° at full ripeness.
- Weight: Genuine graded fruit falls within declared size bands — our Small grade is 150–180 g, Medium 180–225 g, Extra Large 250–275 g, Jumbo 275–300 g.
What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?
Devgad Alphonso at full ripeness tests 20–24° Brix, typically at the upper end of that range. Ratnagiri fruit runs 18–22° Brix. Both figures come from seasonal testing — not marketing copy.
What does the GI Tag mean for Hapus?
GI No. 139 is a Geographical Indication registered at the GI Registry, Chennai. It legally restricts the name "Alphonso" or "Hapus" (in GI-tagged form) to fruit grown in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Powle Home Foods holds Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260, issued 16 October 2019 (Registry certificate 4163). The GI does not apply to mangoes grown elsewhere and labelled Alphonso — that is a misrepresentation.
Ripening and the No-Carbide Promise
Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind.
The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is natural ripening on hay, monitored — not gas-triggered. This is not a marketing claim. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (Thane, NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284) tests weekly through the season. Lab report 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025: all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 below the limit of quantification at 0.01 mg/kg; thiamethoxam detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg.
We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits." We do not say "pesticide-free" — one residue was detected, within limits — and the carbide panel is separate from the pesticide-residue panel.
Every mango also passes AI/ML-assisted machine scanning for internal defects (spongy tissue) and external deformities before packing. A fruit that fails the scan does not go into a box.
Nutritional Value of Hapus Mangoes
Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 vitamin C RDA for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day).
Mangiferin, a polyphenol concentrated in Alphonso pulp and peel, showed anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies (Govindappa et al., 2011). Cell studies are not clinical trials — we mention it because the research exists, not because we claim therapeutic benefit.
Alphonso puree is suitable as a first fruit for babies from about 6 months. That is a serving suggestion based on our product FAQ, not medical advice — check with your paediatrician.

People Also Ask
Why is hapus mango expensive?
Hapus mango is expensive because the yield is small, the season runs only February to June, and genuine Konkan Alphonso can only come from laterite-soil orchards in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg — nowhere else. Hand harvesting, foam-net packing, air-conditioned transport and GI verification all add cost before the fruit reaches you.
When you buy from a GI Authorised User like AlphonsoMango.in, you are paying for fruit that is tested, graded and traceable to a named village.
Can I buy Alphonso mangoes in the USA?
Yes. AlphonsoMango.in exports Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso to the US, UK, UAE, Singapore and Japan each season. Orders within India ship in 1–3 days; international buyers should check the site for export availability during the February-to-June season, as fresh Alphonso is not dispatched July to January.
Who produces the best mango in the world?
Alphonso mango from Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg in coastal Maharashtra is widely considered the benchmark — its Brix at full ripeness runs 18 to 24°, and the combination of laterite soil, Arabian Sea salinity and the Sahyadri microclimate cannot be replicated elsewhere. Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at India's national ODOP Awards 2024.
Devgad Alphonso, sourced from sea-facing orchards in Sindhudurg, typically sits at the upper end of that Brix range and is the choice of most Mumbai buyers in our repeat-order data.
Which brand of mango pulp is best?
The best mango pulp starts with the source variety — pulp made from GI-tagged Ratnagiri or Devgad Alphonso, ripened naturally on a hay bed without carbide or ethylene, will outperform pulp made from unnamed or artificially ripened fruit on aroma and natural sweetness every time. AlphonsoMango.in's aamras and mango pulp come from the same 55-village network as the fresh fruit.
Look for FSSAI-licensed brands that name the mango variety and district of origin on the label — anything less leaves the source unknown.
