Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.

Each box is padded with natural hay and a breathable outer carton. We do not use carbide at any stage — the mangoes arrive tree-ripened and ready to eat within 1–2 days of receipt. Types of Mangoes in India

Types of mangoes grown across India

India accounts for roughly 46% of global mango production (FAO, 2022). Of the 1,000-plus named varieties growing from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, 24 reach commercial scale. The rest are village landraces — tasted at the tree, rarely shipped.

Here are the varieties you are most likely to encounter, ranked loosely by commercial weight.

1. Alphonso Mangoes (Hapus)

The Portuguese brought Hapus to India's Konkan coast in the 16th century. Five hundred years later it has not just survived — it defines what a premium Indian mango is.

Alphonso grows exclusively in Ratnagiri and Devgad, two coastal districts where the laterite-basalt soil, sea breeze, and 2,500 mm annual rainfall combine in a way no other geography replicates. Prashant Powle sources from 48 coastal villages across these two districts; the fruit from Velas, Khed, and Devgad town consistently scores highest on the Brix meter.

The skin turns a uniform saffron-yellow when ripe. Cut it open and the pulp is fibre-free, dense, and aromatic enough to fill a room. Brix ranges from 16° to 22° depending on the grove and the week of harvest.

It is not only the best mango grown in India — it holds GI certification No. 139, registered 16 October 2019.

What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?

Devgad Alphonso measures 18 to 24° Brix at peak ripeness (mid-April to early June). Ratnagiri fruit from the same season runs 16–20° Brix. Both far exceed the 12–14° typical of commercial Tommy Atkins or Totapuri.

What does GI-tagged Alphonso mean?

GI (Geographical Indication) No. 139 certifies that only mangoes grown within the defined Ratnagiri-Devgad zone can carry the Alphonso name under Indian law. AlphonsoMango.in (Powle Home Foods) holds Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 — one of a small number issued by the GI Registry (Certificate 4163).

2. Kesar Mangoes

Kesar — the word means saffron — grows at the foothills of the Girnar Hills in Junagadh district, Gujarat. The name fits: the pulp is a deep, almost turmeric-orange and the aroma carries the same warmth.

Medium-sized, round, with a distinct curve at the base, Kesar is easy to identify at a glance. Some call it the Queen of mangoes, placing it second only to Alphonso in sweetness and aroma. Season runs late April through June.

We carry Kesar on our mango collection page during its season window.

3. Totapuri Mangoes

Also called Ginimoothi — gini means parrot, moothi means beak — Totapuri is shaped exactly like you'd expect. The elongated, beak-tipped fruit is grown widely across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

Totapuri is low-sugar and firm. It is the mango the processed food industry loves: most commercial mango pulp tins and pickles in South India start with Totapuri. You will not eat it fresh the way you eat Alphonso — but as a base for Aamras manufacturing it works well.

4. Himsagar Mangoes

Known also as Khirsapati, Himsagar grows in Murshidabad, Malda, Hooghly, and Chapai Nawabganj districts of West Bengal. A medium-sized fruit weighs 250–350 grams and, most notably, 77% of it is pure pulp with almost no fibre.

Himsagar has an excellent shelf life for a non-fibrous variety. Season peaks in May and June. If you are in Bengal and want to experience the closest local rival to Alphonso, Himsagar is the one.

5. Dasehri Mangoes

Dasehri is North India's most beloved mango. It originates from Dasehri village near Kakori in Lucknow district, Uttar Pradesh — a village that has been growing the same clone for over 200 years.

The fruit is small to medium, oblong, and turns lime-yellow when ripe. Sugar content is moderate (12–15° Brix), fibre is present but manageable, and the skin stays thin. Season: mid-June through July, which makes it one of the later-harvested varieties. Lucknow's mango belt — Malihabad — ships Dasehri across North India in volume.

Best Mangoes in South India

Different types of mangoes from South India including Imam Pasand and Neelam

Telangana, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh produce two varieties worth knowing.

Imam Pasand

A royal variety with documented history going back to the Nizam's court in Hyderabad. The skin stays mottled green even at full ripeness, which confuses first-time buyers. Inside, the pulp is cream-yellow and almost custard-smooth. It is one of India's finest eating mangoes — largely unknown outside its home state.

Neelam

Large, yellow, and intensely aromatic, Neelam ripens late in the season (June–July) after Alphonso and Kesar are finished. It is the last wave of the Indian mango season and gives southern households another two weeks of fresh fruit before the monsoon closes everything down.

How We Ripen Alphonso

At our pack-houses across Ratnagiri and Devgad, mangoes are harvested at the mature green stage and laid in trays of paddy hay. The hay creates a warm, humid micro-environment that draws out ethylene naturally. No calcium carbide, no ethephon sprays, no gas chambers.

Fruit arrives at the customer 80–90% ripe. Leave it on your kitchen counter for one day and it reaches full flavour. Put it in the refrigerator immediately and the ripening stalls — you will lose aroma and the pulp texture turns grainy. Patience of 24 hours beats refrigeration every time.

This is a genuine limitation we tell every customer: if you need fruit ripe the moment it arrives, let us know and we ship one day earlier in the ripening window. We would rather adjust than have you refrigerate something that needs warmth.

Storing Your Mangoes at Home

Unripe mangoes

Room temperature, out of direct sun. A closed cardboard box retains natural ethylene and speeds ripening by 12–18 hours. Do not wrap in plastic.

Ripe mangoes

Refrigerate for up to 3 days. Take them out 30 minutes before eating — cold dulls the aroma, and Alphonso's signature fragrance is half the experience.

Mango pulp

Once cut, blend and freeze in small portions. Frozen Alphonso pulp holds flavour for up to 6 months. That is how we stretch the season — Aamras made from frozen pulp beats any tinned alternative.
