The preference split above is drawn from repeat-order data across 47,000+ customers. Neither is objectively "better" — the orchards and Brix grade matter more than the taluka name alone.

Weight Grades Explained

Every fruit we dispatch is weighed and graded before packing. The four grades are: Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g), and Jumbo (275–300 g). AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal issues such as spongy tissue and for external deformities before it enters the box.

Delivery Across India

Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive transit, ripe within about three days of delivery. The route from orchard to your door runs like this: two hours from tree to our Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, post-harvest cooling, ten to twelve hours by air-conditioned vehicle to our Mumbai packhouse, twenty-four to forty-eight hours of natural hay-bed ripening there, then dispatch. Total orchard to dispatch: 48–72 hours.

Transit after dispatch: 20–24 hours to metro cities, 1–3 days elsewhere. We reach 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code.

The box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard courier-grade carton with a 12-slot partition that takes the transit pressure instead of the fruit. Every mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm) on a hay-straw bed. Six air holes top and bottom keep airflow active during ripening after delivery.

We do not ship fresh Alphonso July to January. That is the honest limit of a seasonal fruit.

How to Order

  1. Step 1 — Select grade: Choose your grade (Small, Medium, Extra Large or Jumbo) and box size (half dozen, one dozen or two dozen) on the product page. Ratnagiri Hapus starts at ₹1,849.
  2. Step 2 — Add to cart: Place your pre-order. Pre-orders can be cancelled before dispatch. No physical return is required if fruit arrives damaged — report within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video on WhatsApp and we dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account.
  3. Step 3 — Dispatch: Your order ships via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Most Indian cities receive delivery in 1–3 days.

What Is Ratnagiri Hapus?

Ratnagiri Hapus Alphonso mango — GI-tagged, Konkan grown

Ratnagiri Hapus is the local name for Alphonso mango grown in Ratnagiri district, Konkan, Maharashtra. "Hapus" is the Marathi pronunciation of Alphonso — the name traces to Alfonso de Albuquerque, the Portuguese colonial administrator who introduced grafted mango cultivation to the Konkan coast in the 16th century.

The GI tag (No. 139) covers both Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. What separates genuine Ratnagiri Hapus from other mangoes sold under that name is a combination of laterite-rich coastal soil, proximity to the Arabian Sea, orchard age (our partner orchards are typically 12–25 years old), and natural ripening practice. A mango grown elsewhere and ripened in an ethylene chamber can smell similar but will never hit 18–24° Brix with the same pulp-to-fibre ratio.

What Brix Level Is Ratnagiri Hapus?

At full ripeness, genuine Ratnagiri Hapus reads 18–24° Brix. Devgad fruit tends toward the upper end of that range. Early-season fruit (February–March) often lands below 20°; peak-season fruit (April–May) regularly exceeds 22°. We do not sell out-of-season fruit to hit a number — that is why the season is February to June and nothing else.

Ratnagiri: Where It Grows

Ratnagiri sits on the Konkan coast, caught between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. The combination creates a microclimate that no inland district replicates: humidity from the sea, mineral runoff from the Ghats, and laterite soil that drains fast while holding trace minerals. This is why the same Alphonso rootstock planted in Pune tastes different.

We source from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. In Ratnagiri taluka alone: Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad, Gaonkhadi, Ambeshet, Shirgaon, Mirya, Kalbadevi, Majgaon, Kasheli and Adi. From Rajapur, Lanja and Mandangad talukas: Rajapur, Bankot, Jaitapur, Ansure, Kelshi, Anjarle, Velneshwar and Velas among others. Prashant Powle, who founded AlphonsoMango.in in 2017, mapped these villages specifically for Brix consistency and alternate-bearing management — orchards that over-fruit one year produce inferior fruit the next.

Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024. That award is to the district's fruit, not to any single brand — but it reflects what growers in these villages have known for decades.

How We Farm and Ripen It

Hapus Aam natural hay-bed ripening at AlphonsoMango.in Mumbai packhouse

Harvesting Without Shaking the Tree

Every fruit is hand-harvested with a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera is used so the harvester can see the stem before cutting. A bruise at harvest shows up as a black spot by delivery — we removed the risk at the source.

Natural Hay-Bed Ripening — No Carbide, No Ethylene

After post-harvest cooling and hot-water treatment at the packhouse (which reduces surface issues and extends shelf life), fruit travels ten to twelve hours by air-conditioned vehicle to our Mumbai packhouse. There, it rests on hay beds in temperature-controlled rooms for 24–48 hours. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind. This practice — called Aadi ripening locally — is what allows the sugar to develop from within rather than being triggered by gas from outside.

We test for pesticide residues weekly through the season with Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, TC-8284). The April 2025 report (certificate 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) found all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits, with 27 of 28 below the limit of quantification at 0.01 mg/kg. One residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say independently tested and within Codex limits — not "pesticide-free," because one residue was detected, within limits.

What Our 100+ Farmer Families Follow

We work with 100+ partner farmer families across our 55 villages. Every orchard follows strict cultivation SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers are approved from flowering to harvest. Weeds and grass cut during the rains go into circular pits with cow dung for biological decomposition — becoming natural manure for the trees. Vermiculture at the tree base builds the soil over years, not weeks. These are not marketing claims — they are practices that Prashant Powle reviews orchard by orchard before each season.

Nutrition You Actually Get

Ripe Ratnagiri Hapus pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, a polyphenol found in mango, showed anti-inflammatory activity in a 2011 cell study (Govindappa et al., 2011). We cite the study; we do not claim the mango cures inflammation in humans.

One honest note: Alphonso is a high-sugar fruit. At 18–24° Brix, a serving is a treat, not a therapeutic dose. Enjoy it as the seasonal fruit it is.

Season and Availability

The Ratnagiri Hapus season runs February to June, with peak availability from March to May. Pre-orders open before the season starts. Fruit dispatched before March may reflect early-season Brix at the lower end of the 18–24° range. By April, orchards in Pawas and Golap near Ratnagiri taluka are typically at full Brix.

July to January: we do not sell fresh Alphonso. No cold-store blending, no off-season stock. If you see "fresh Ratnagiri Hapus" sold in August, it is not fresh from this season — ask for the harvest date.

46% of our customers reorder within the same season or the next. The average customer orders 2.8 boxes per season. 18% of orders are sent as gifts. These are not aspirational numbers — they come from our order data since 2020.

Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on the existential pressures facing Alphonso growers that season (read the article). Unseasonal rain, erratic flowering, and yield pressure are real — which is why pre-ordering early in the season is the safer move.
