Mangoes in Mysore: local varieties and Konkan Alphonso

Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes from AlphonsoMango.in for delivery to Mysore

Karnataka grows many mangoes, and Mysore shops stock several of them in summer. Badami, Raspuri and Mallika are well known in the state. Badami is sometimes called Karnataka Alphonso, but it is a separate variety with its own taste, skin and flesh. The original Alphonso, called Hapus in Marathi, is the Konkan variety grown on the western coast of Maharashtra.

So when someone in Mysore asks for Alphonso mango, the clearest way to be sure is to ask for the origin by name: Ratnagiri or Devgad. We source Alphonso across 48 villages of that belt. Ratnagiri is a district, and Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district. Both grow the same variety, and we do not rank one above the other.

What to ask when you buy Alphonso in Mysore

  • Which region? Ask whether the fruit is from Ratnagiri or Devgad, and not only whether it is called Alphonso.
  • Which grade? Alphonso fruits generally weigh 150 to 300 g, so ask for the weight range and the count in a dozen.
  • How was it ripened? Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011.
  • Licence. A food seller should be able to show an FSSAI licence number. Ours is 10020022011783.

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. No look, smell or home test proves how a mango was ripened, and a bucket-of-water test is only a rough clue, not proof.

Alphonso options for Mysore

Tell us the occasion if you write to us, and we can suggest a grade. The product page lists the sizes in stock when the season is open.

Delivery to Mysore

Alphonso mango packing for Mysore orders

We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Check your PIN code at checkout, because we do not promise next-day delivery for a named city. Enter your full address with a landmark and a phone number that will be reachable.

Open the box on arrival. If a box arrives damaged, report it within 24 hours of delivery. Fruit that arrives firm should be kept at room temperature, in a single layer away from sun, until it softens and smells sweet near the stalk. Do not put firm fruit in the refrigerator.

Where our fruit comes from

Our fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, so each mango is cut and caught instead of shaken down. It is then laid on hay beds and ripens naturally. Because ripening is natural, a box can hold fruit at different stages. That is normal and helps you spread the eating over a few days.

Powle Home Foods, which runs AlphonsoMango.in from Mumbai, made its first sales offline in 2019 and has sold online since 2020. Eating and cooking Alphonso at home

A ripe Alphonso gives slightly under the thumb and smells sweet near the stalk. Slice along the flat stone on both sides, score the halves in a grid and scoop out the cubes. The pulp is smooth enough to eat plain, blend into a shake or fold into yoghurt.

  • Aamras: blend ripe pulp with a pinch of cardamom and serve it chilled with puri.
  • Shakes and smoothies: blend pulp with milk or curd and ice.
  • Desserts: use pulp in kulfi, puddings and sweets such as amba wadi.

Mango is a sweet fruit. If you have diabetes or another condition, or you are feeding a baby, ask your doctor or dietitian how much suits you.
