Delivery to Chennai

We cut off same-day dispatch at 12:00 noon IST. Orders placed before noon on a working day go out the same evening via BlueDart air freight. Chennai typically receives the box within 1–3 days of dispatch.

The fruit travels in a ventilated corrugated box lined with recycled wood wool. Each mango sits individually cushioned. If the fruit arrives firm and unripe — which can happen in February or early March when the season is just opening — leave it at room temperature for 2–4 days. Do not refrigerate unripe Alphonso. Once the skin turns uniformly yellow and the aroma rises, it is ready. We do not add artificial ethylene or carbide at any stage, so the ripening timeline is driven by the fruit's own biology, not a chemical trigger.

We do not guarantee next-day delivery to all Chennai pin codes. BlueDart air transit to Tamil Nadu is reliable, but remote pin codes — outside Greater Chennai — can take the full three days.

Where the Mangoes Come From

Prashant Powle sources directly from 48 villages across two Konkan districts: Ratnagiri and Devgad. Villages like Velas, Rajapur, and Malvan in Ratnagiri; Devgad town and surrounding coastal groves in Sindhudurg. The laterite soil here — red, iron-rich, excellent drainage — is the reason the Brix climbs so high. The same cultivar planted on different soil produces a different fruit. Chennai buyers who have tasted locally grown "Alphonso" from Tamil Nadu markets and then tasted ours report a clear difference in aroma and sugar depth.

We source from 47,000+ customers' worth of repeat orders since 2019. That number is not padding — it means our supply chain has been pressure-tested across five full seasons, including the difficult 2022 season when unseasonal rain cut yields by roughly 30% in Ratnagiri.

How to Spot Genuine Alphonso Mango in Chennai

What does real Hapus look like?

Ripe Alphonso is uniformly yellow — no green patches, no artificial orange dye. The skin is thin, slightly waxy, and gives a little under thumb pressure. The aroma is saffron-sweet, not fermented or chemical. Cut it open and the flesh is fibre-free, deep saffron, and pulls cleanly from the seed.

What is the GI tag and why does it matter for Chennai buyers?

GI No. 139 (Registry Certificate 4163, issued 16 October 2019) certifies that the fruit was grown in the designated Ratnagiri or Devgad zones. Powle Home Foods holds Authorised User credential AU/5974/GI/139/260. When you see this number on our packaging, you have a verifiable paper trail. Most mango sellers in Chennai markets cannot provide this. Some sell Kesar or Totapuri labelled as Alphonso — the GI tag closes that gap.

How can I verify the GI tag on my box?

Check the box label for "GI No. 139" and the Authorised User number AU/5974/GI/139/260. You can cross-reference at the Indian GI Registry database. Our FSSAI licence 10020022011783 and APEDA registration 225579 also appear on the invoice.

Natural Ripening – No Carbide

We ripen in traditional hay beds. Harvested fruit is buried in dry paddy straw for 3–5 days at the packing shed. The straw regulates temperature and allows ethylene — the fruit's own hormone — to do the work. This is how Konkan farmers have ripened Hapus for generations.

Calcium carbide ripening produces acetylene gas, which mimics ethylene but leaves calcium and arsenic residues on the skin. The FSSAI banned carbide use in 2011 under the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) Regulations. We have never used it. Our FSSAI licence 10020022011783 is the accountable credential behind that claim.

Does hay-bed ripening affect shelf life?

Naturally ripened Alphonso holds well for 4–6 days at room temperature once fully yellow. Refrigerate at 10–12°C (not colder) to extend by 2–3 more days. Below 8°C, the flesh darkens and loses flavour — chilling injury is irreversible.

Season and Availability

The Alphonso season in Konkan runs from mid-March to the end of May for Ratnagiri, and to mid-June for Devgad. Outside those months, genuine Alphonso does not exist — no harvest, no stock, no shipping. We will not sell you frozen fruit labelled fresh.

July through January: we carry no Alphonso. If you land on this page in August, pre-register your email for next season's first dispatch alert. That is the honest answer.

The 2025 season opens approximately mid-March. Early orders placed now will be fulfilled in dispatch sequence when the first harvest clears grading.

Nutrition and Brix

What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?

Devgad Alphonso measures 20–24° Brix at peak season — mid-April to mid-May. Ratnagiri runs 18 to 24° Brix. For context, a supermarket mango in Chennai typically measures 12–16° Brix. The difference is taste, not marketing.

What nutrients does Alphonso mango provide?

100 g of ripe Alphonso flesh delivers roughly 60 kcal, 15 g natural sugars, 36 mg Vitamin C (40% of daily requirement), 54 µg Vitamin A, and 0.9 g dietary fibre. It also contains mangiferin, a polyphenol with documented antioxidant activity (Masibo and Nabhan, 2009, studied mango polyphenol profiles across Indian cultivars). Alphonso scores among the highest in mangiferin concentration compared with Totapuri, Kesar, and Langra.
