Buy Alphonso Mango Online in Chennai
Chennai buyers can get GI-tagged Alphonso mangoes from Ratnagiri and Devgad, Konkan, Maharashtra — sourced by Powle Home Foods and dispatched within 48–72 hours of harvest. Both varieties carry GI No. 139. Both are ripened on a hay bed. Neither touches an ethylene chamber or calcium carbide.
Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which to Choose?
Both are Alphonso. Both hold GI No. 139. The difference is microclimate and, for many buyers who order repeatedly, preference. Our repeat-order data shows north India tends toward Ratnagiri; Mumbai leans Devgad. Chennai customers split roughly even, so we suggest trying one box of each across a season.

Mango Delivery to Chennai
Fruit leaves the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse within 48–72 hours of harvest. It travels in air-conditioned vehicles to the Mumbai packhouse, where it rests on a hay bed for 24–48 hours of natural ripening. Then it goes to you.
Dispatch to Chennai is by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Transit is 1–3 days for most Chennai addresses. We reach 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes across India.
Fruit ships at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough for transit, fully ripe within about three days of delivery. If anything arrives damaged, photograph it and contact us within 24 hours. We replace damaged fruit. That is our stated policy.
We do not ship fresh Alphonso to Chennai in July, August, September, October, November, December or January. The season is over by June. Ordering outside February–June will get you a preorder for the following season, not immediate dispatch.
How to Order
- Select your grade and variety. Choose Ratnagiri (₹1,849–₹5,399) or Devgad (₹1,849–₹5,499) and your preferred size — Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g) — in a half dozen, one dozen or two dozen box.
- Add to cart and complete checkout. Enter your Chennai pin code at checkout; the system confirms serviceability and assigns the right courier automatically.
- We pack and dispatch. Your order ships by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code, and arrives in 1–3 days with a tracking link.
Where the Mangoes Come From
Prashant Powle sources from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. On the Devgad side, that includes Devgad itself, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Girye, Kunkeshwar and 18 other villages. On the Ratnagiri side: Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mirya, Kasheli, Purnagad and more. Every partner orchard is sea-facing. Trees are typically 12–25 years old — old enough to produce fruit with real depth of flavour, selected on Brix consistency and alternate-bearing management.
Every fruit is weighed and graded. AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal issues (spongy tissue) and external deformities before packing. The ones that do not pass do not ship. That is not a marketing claim — it is how the grading line works at the Malvan packing centre and Devgad packing point.
Harvest is careful. A Nutan/Zela pole with a catching net cuts the stem cleanly. The tree is never shaken and fruit never falls. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera locates the mango before the cut. A fruit that hits the ground is bruised before it reaches Chennai.
How We Ripen the Fruit
The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening in a temperature-controlled room. Not an ethylene chamber. Not calcium carbide. The hay triggers and regulates the ethylene the fruit produces on its own — the same method used in Konkan households for generations.
We also run weekly pesticide-residue testing through Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284). The April 2025 report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) showed all 28 tested residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of the 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg — well within range. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits." We do not say "pesticide-free."
After hot-water post-harvest treatment at the source, the fruit is cooled at the packhouse before the 10–12 hour air-conditioned road journey to Mumbai. That temperature discipline is what makes 1–3 day courier transit viable for a fragile fruit like Alphonso.
Why the Foam Net and 5-Ply Box Matter for a Chennai Delivery
Each mango travels in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm, length 100–120 mm matched to fruit size). The net prevents side bruising, compression marks, vibration damage, skin friction scars (Alphonso lenticels blacken when rubbed), stem punctures from neighbouring fruit, latex cross-contamination and moisture build-up. The diamond mesh keeps air moving so condensation evaporates rather than triggering anthracnose.
The box is a top-and-bottom 5-ply corrugated fibreboard unit, 130 gsm paper, with alternate flute orientation. A 12-slot partition carries the transit pressure so the fruit does not. Six air holes top and bottom keep airflow going during the ripening phase. A Chennai delivery that takes two days in summer heat needs this level of packaging — a thin single-wall box would not hold.
Storage After Delivery
Fruit arrives at 70–80% ripeness. Keep it at room temperature — Chennai's warm climate actually helps it ripen evenly. Check daily; the mango is ready when it yields slightly to gentle thumb pressure and the saffron-yellow skin deepens near the shoulders. Once ripe, refrigerate and eat within two days. Do not refrigerate unripe Alphonso — chilling arrests ripening and flattens the aroma.
Mango Season in Chennai
The Alphonso season runs February to June, with March to May as peak. By late June, supply from Konkan drops sharply as orchards finish their cycle. There is no fresh Alphonso available July to January — the fruit does not store that long and we do not blend cold-store fruit into live-season orders.
Tamil Nadu has its own mango culture. Banganapalli and Neelam are local staples, grown in Salem, Krishnagiri and Tiruvannamalai. They are good mangoes. Alphonso from Konkan is a different proposition — narrower season, different flavour profile (the saffron note in a ripe Devgad Hapus has no close local equivalent), and a GI certificate that tracks origin to a named district.
18% of our orders across 47,000+ customers are gifts. Chennai buyers ordering for family, for Pongal-adjacent gifting in early year, or for corporate baskets during the April–May peak account for a meaningful share of that number. A two-dozen box of Jumbo Devgad Alphonso ships well as a premium gift.
Nutrition
Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). The fruit also contains mangiferin, a xanthonoid studied by Govindappa et al. (2011) for anti-inflammatory activity in cell models.
Alphonso puree — our Aamras — is suitable as a serving for babies from about six months. Keep it as a complementary food alongside breast milk; that is a serving suggestion, not medical advice.
We do not claim Alphonso cures anything. It is a fruit. A very good one.

People Also Ask
Where is mango famous in Tamil Nadu?
Salem is the most recognised mango district in Tamil Nadu, known for Banganapalli and Neelam varieties grown across Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. Ratnagiri and Devgad in Maharashtra, however, produce Alphonso — India's only mango with a GI tag covering both districts — and Chennai buyers order it directly online every season.
Is mango available in India?
Yes. India is the world's largest mango producer, growing over 1,500 varieties across Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The Alphonso season runs February to June in Konkan, Maharashtra. Outside that window, fresh Alphonso is not available — only processed products like aamras or pulp carry through the year.
Who owns mango brand in India?
Several mango brands operate in India. AlphonsoMango.in is owned and operated by Powle Home Foods, founded in 2017 by Prashant Powle and registered in July 2019. The brand holds GI Authorised User credentials AU/5974/GI/139/260 for Ratnagiri Alphonso and sources from 55 villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts.
Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on the existential pressures facing Alphonso growers from unseasonal rain and yield compression — as a GI-certified grower and trader, not a commentator. (Read the article.)
