Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which to Choose?

Both carry GI No. 139. The differences are real but subtle — village geography and sea exposure shape them more than variety does. Our own repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows north India leans Ratnagiri; Mumbai buyers lean Devgad.

Alphonso mango delivery packaging — 5-ply CFB box with foam nets and hay bed

Fruit travels from tree to your door in 48–72 hours from harvest. The chain: about 2 hours from orchard to the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, then 10–12 hours by air-conditioned truck to our Mumbai packhouse, then 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening, then dispatch.

Transit to metro cities is typically 20–24 hours. Everywhere else is 1–3 days. We reach 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code.

The box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard carton (130 gsm, alternate flute orientation) with reinforced corners, a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure so the fruit doesn't have to, and six air holes top and bottom. Every mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm) inside a hay bed. The foam net prevents skin friction — Alphonso lenticels blacken when rubbed — and stops latex cross-contamination between fruit.

Dispatch is at 70–80% ripeness. The fruit finishes ripening in about three days at room temperature after delivery. If any fruit arrives damaged, send us a photo within 24 hours and we replace it in full.

We do not dispatch fresh Alphonso mango from July to January. That is the honest limit of the season.

How to Order

  1. Select your grade. Choose Ratnagiri or Devgad Alphonso, then pick a weight grade — Small (150–180 g) through Jumbo (275–300 g). Prices run ₹1,849 to ₹5,499 depending on grade and quantity. Half dozen, 1 dozen and 2 dozen box options are available on the product page.
  2. Add to cart and check out. Enter your pin code at checkout — the system confirms courier availability and delivery estimate automatically.
  3. We dispatch. Your order ships via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code, and reaches most Indian cities in 1–3 days.

Origin and GI Certification

Alphonso mangoes from Ratnagiri and Devgad — GI certified Hapus Aam orchards in Konkan Maharashtra

The Alphonso mango GI tag (No. 139) covers Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts in the Konkan belt of Maharashtra. Powle Home Foods sources from 55 named villages across both districts — from Pawas and Golap in Ratnagiri taluka to Devgad, Jamsande and Vijaydurg in Sindhudurg, and south to Achara and Tondavali in Malvan taluka.

The orchards we work with are typically 12–25 years old, sea-facing, selected by founder Prashant Powle on three criteria: Brix consistency across a season, tree longevity, and how the farmer manages alternate-bearing years. We partner with 100+ farmer families. Each follows strict cultivation SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers are used from flowering to harvest.

What does GI Authorised User mean for the buyer?

A GI Authorised User is a certified producer or trader permitted by the GI Registry to sell fruit under the protected tag. Our number is AU/5974/GI/139/260, issued under GI Registry Certificate No. 4163 on 16 October 2019. This means every box we sell is traceable to certified growing zones — not just labelled "Alphonso" from an unverified source.

Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — a district-product recognition, not an award to AlphonsoMango.in, but one that reflects the standing of the fruit we source.

How is the fruit independently tested?

Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284) tested our fruit through the 2025 season — report 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025. All 28 pesticide residues were within Codex maximum residue limits. Twenty-seven of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg); thiamethoxam read at 0.013 mg/kg against a permissible limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We test weekly through the season, not once at the start.

How We Ripen the Fruit

Natural hay-bed ripening — called Aadi ripening in Konkan — is the only method we use. Fruit sits on straw in temperature-controlled rooms at the Mumbai packhouse for 24–48 hours. No ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind.

This matters for flavour. Carbide-ripened fruit reaches colour before sugar develops fully. Hay-bed fruit ripens from the inside, which is why Alphonso pulp from a natural-ripened fruit tastes different from a chemically accelerated one — the Brix actually has time to peak.

After harvest, fruit goes through a controlled hot-water treatment to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life, then post-harvest cooling at the packhouse before the AC truck run to Mumbai.

Grading and Packing

Every fruit is weighed and sorted into one of four grades: Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g), Jumbo (275–300 g). We also run each mango through AI/ML-assisted machine scanning that checks for internal defects like spongy tissue and external deformities before packing. Fruit that doesn't pass goes elsewhere — it does not go into a customer box.

Harvest itself is careful. The picker uses a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken and the fruit never falls. For very tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera gives the picker a view of the canopy. Bruising at harvest is one of the main causes of spongy tissue progressing — this pole system reduces that risk at the source.

Season and Availability

The Alphonso season runs February to June, with peak supply and best quality in March, April and May. Outside this window — July through January — we do not sell fresh Alphonso mango. Aamras, mango pulp and other products are available year-round.

The 2026 season was difficult. Prashant Powle was quoted in The Economic Times in June 2026 on the existential pressures facing Alphonso growers from unseasonal weather and yield drops. Supply was tighter and pricing reflected that. We held our sourcing standards rather than substitute with inferior fruit.

When is the best time to order Alphonso mango?

March and April give you peak fruit — maximum Brix, best weight distribution, most consistent colour. May fruit is still excellent but availability narrows. Orders placed in February are often for early-season fruit, which is good but can run slightly lower Brix than the March peak.

Nutrition

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day).

Mangiferin, a polyphenol present in Alphonso pulp, showed anti-inflammatory activity in a cell study by Govindappa et al. (2011). This was a laboratory study, not a clinical trial — we state it for context, not as a health claim.

Alphonso puree is suitable as an introductory food for babies from about 6 months. Keep this as a serving suggestion; it is not medical advice.

People Also Ask

Is Alphonso mango available in the USA?

Fresh GI-tagged Alphonso mango from Ratnagiri and Devgad is not legally importable into the USA as a whole fresh fruit — USDA APHIS restricts fresh mango imports from India without irradiation treatment. Alphonso pulp, aamras and mango-based products do reach Indian grocery stores across the USA through licensed importers.

If you are in India, alphonsomango.in ships fresh Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso across 15,000–17,000 pin codes during the February–June season.

Why is Alphonso mango costly?

Alphonso mango costs more because every part of its production resists shortcuts. The fruit grows only in a narrow coastal belt of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, yields roughly once a year, must be hand-harvested with a pole-and-net so it never falls, graded by weight, hay-bed ripened without carbide, and packed in courier-grade boxes within 48–72 hours of harvest.

Alternate-bearing orchards — where trees produce heavily one year and lightly the next — keep annual supply unpredictable, and poor flowering seasons can cut yields sharply, as Prashant Powle described to The Economic Times in June 2026.

What is the cost of 1 kg Alphonso mango?

GI-tagged Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso from alphonsomango.in is sold by the box — half dozen, one dozen or two dozen — starting at ₹1,849, not priced per kilogram. Because individual fruit weights run from 150 g for Small grade to 300 g for Jumbo, the effective per-kilo cost varies by grade and box size across the ₹1,849–₹5,499 range.

Retail market prices for loose Alphonso per kilogram fluctuate with the season, grade and origin, and we do not quote a single per-kg figure that would hold across those variables.
