The Devgad fruit grows in red laterite soil with a higher salt-wind exposure from the Arabian Sea — that combination pushes the Brix reading up by a full degree compared with most Ratnagiri lots. If you want the sweetest mango we sell, order Devgad. If you want larger fruit for aamras batches, Ratnagiri wins on volume per box.
Delivery Across India
We dispatch via BlueDart air freight only — no road cargo for mangoes. Cut-off for same-day dispatch is 11:00 AM IST, Monday to Saturday. Orders placed after that ship the next business day.
Transit windows from our Mumbai consolidation point:
- Mumbai, Pune, Nashik: next day
- Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai: 1–2 days
- Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Surat: 2 days
- Northeast India, Jammu: 2–3 days
Each box is packed with a single ventilated corrugated layer and a hay-cushion insert to absorb vibration. We do not use gel ice packs — chilling Alphonso below 12°C during transit kills the aroma. Fruit arrives near-ripe (stage 4 of 5) so it completes ripening at room temperature over 1–2 days after delivery. We do not ship July through January. No stock, no exceptions.
How to order
- Step 1: Select Grade — Choose Ratnagiri (₹1,849–₹5,399) or Devgad (₹1,849–₹5,499) based on Brix preference, fruit size, and budget.
- Step 2: Add to Cart — Select box size (dozen, 2 dozen, 4 dozen) and confirm PIN code serviceability at checkout.
- Step 3: Same-day Dispatch — Orders confirmed before 11:00 AM IST on a business day ship the same afternoon via BlueDart air.
Where These Mangoes Come From
The Konkan coastal strip — roughly 720 km of laterite cliffs, red soil, and monsoon humidity — produces Alphonso mangoes unlike anywhere else in India. Ratnagiri district alone accounts for the bulk of India's premium Hapus exports. Our sourcing covers 48 villages, including clusters around Devgad taluka where the fruit is smaller, denser, and routinely hits 23–24° Brix at peak ripeness.
Prashant Powle, who oversees farm selection at AlphonsoMango.in, made a deliberate choice to work only with farmers who follow chemical-free cultivation — no synthetic fertilisers, no pesticide sprays on flowering clusters. That limits our supply pool. We passed on several larger orchards in 2023 because grading tests showed carbide residues. The trade-off is a shorter, tighter season with fruit we can actually stand behind.
What Makes Konkan Soil Different?
Ratnagiri and Devgad sit on Deccan laterite — an iron-rich, well-drained soil that stresses the mango tree just enough during the dry season (November–February) to concentrate sugars in the fruit. The sea breeze off the Arabian Sea moderates night temperatures, slowing ripening and building aromatic compounds. You cannot replicate that in Gir or Valsad, which is why Kesar and Ratnagiri Alphonso taste different even when sold side by side in Mumbai.
How to Identify a Real Alphonso
The fruit market is full of impostors. Vendors in Mumbai regularly label Raigad or Goa mangoes as "Hapus" and charge Ratnagiri prices. Here is what separates authentic Alphonso from the rest.
Visual and Tactile Checks
- Shape: Oval to oblong, with a slight beak at the tip. Not perfectly round.
- Skin at ripe: Uniform saffron-yellow with no green patches. Carbide-ripened fruit turns yellow unevenly and shows green near the stem.
- Feel: Firm with a slight give — like pressing a tennis ball very gently. Mushy means overripe or mishandled.
- Stem sap: Natural Alphonso weeps a thin, clear sap from the stem end when freshly cut from the tree. Carbide-treated fruit has none.
The GI Tag — What It Actually Means
GI No. 139 (issued by the Government of India, Registry certificate 4163, dated 16 October 2019) covers Alphonso mangoes grown in specific talukas of Ratnagiri and Devgad. AlphonsoMango.in holds Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 — one of the few online retailers with documented authorisation. The tag is not just a sticker. It comes with traceability back to the orchard.
When you buy from a vendor who cannot show you their AU number, the GI claim is unverifiable. Ask for it. Most cannot produce it.
Natural Ripening — No Carbide
Calcium carbide ripening is illegal under the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011 in India. Despite that, a significant share of mangoes sold in retail markets — including Borivali's fruit lanes — are carbide-treated because it cuts ripening time from 5–7 days to under 48 hours.
We ripen exclusively in hay beds. The fruit is laid on dry paddy straw in wooden crates, covered with more straw, and left at ambient Konkan temperature (28–33°C) for 4–6 days. The straw traps ethylene emitted by the fruit itself, accelerating natural ripening without introducing any chemical residue. The process is slow, it requires floor space, and it cannot be rushed — but it is the only method that preserves the aromatic esters that give Alphonso its signature fragrance.
How to Tell Carbide Ripening from Natural
Carbide-treated mango: bright yellow skin, white or pale flesh near the seed, sharp acidic smell, skin blisters within 48 hours of purchase. Natural hay-ripened mango: even golden colour, deep orange flesh all the way to the seed, saffron-honey aroma, holds at room temperature for 3–4 days post-ripening without collapsing.
Mango Season: Exact Windows
When Is Alphonso Mango Season?
Mid-March to end of May for Ratnagiri Alphonso. Late March to mid-June for Devgad. The first fortnight of April is peak — fruit is fully mature, sugar has built up through March's dry heat, and supply is at its highest before the pre-monsoon showers hit. We do not sell mangoes outside this window. If you see "fresh Alphonso" advertised in July or August, it is not Alphonso — it is a different variety relabelled.
Week-by-Week Quality Curve
- Mid-March (early crop): Smaller fruit, Brix around 20–21°. Good but not peak.
- 1–20 April: Prime. Brix 18 to 24°. Full aroma. Best time to order.
- 21 April – 15 May: Second flush. Larger fruit, Brix 21–23°. Excellent for aamras.
- Late May – mid-June (Devgad only): Final lots. Quality varies by tree and rainfall timing.
What Happens After June?
Nothing, honestly. The monsoon arrives in Konkan by 5–10 June and shuts down harvesting. We close orders, stop dispatch, and spend July to February preparing next season's farm agreements. Pre-booking for the next season opens around December. Join the waitlist on either product page above.
Nutrition in Alphonso Mango
What Nutrients Does Alphonso Mango Contain?
Per 100g of ripe Alphonso pulp (ICMR food composition data, 2017):
- Energy: 74 kcal
- Total sugars: 16.4g (primarily sucrose and fructose)
- Vitamin C: 36mg (40% of adult daily requirement)
- Beta-carotene (pro-vitamin A): 2,743 µg — significantly higher than most commercial mango varieties
- Potassium: 156mg
- Dietary fibre: 1.6g
The high beta-carotene is what makes Alphonso pulp deep orange rather than pale yellow. It is not just colour — that pigment converts to vitamin A in the body. Devgad fruit, with its extra sugar concentration, skews slightly higher on the sucrose fraction but the vitamin profile is essentially the same as Ratnagiri.
Is Mango Good for Diabetics?
Alphonso has a glycaemic index of approximately 51–56 (low-to-medium GI range), according to a 2008 study published in the Journal of Nutrition. Two or three pieces at a sitting is a reasonable portion for most adults. If you are managing blood glucose actively, speak to your doctor — we cannot give medical advice. What we can say is that carbide-free, naturally ripened fruit has no added chemicals that could complicate the picture further.
