Send Gifts to India: Amazon vs Direct Farm Seller

By Prashant Powle  •   7 minute read

If you want to send gifts to India, Amazon is convenient for most things, while a direct farm seller tells you more about fresh fruit such as mangoes. Neither is automatically better. Check who the seller is, the variety and origin, the GI credential, how it is ripened and the delivery partner before you pay.

When people search for ways to send gifts to India online, Amazon is often the first name that comes to mind. It is a sensible place to start for books, gadgets and many packaged items. Fresh mangoes are different. The fruit is seasonal, it ripens within days, and two boxes with the same photo can be very different fruit. So the useful question is not "Amazon or not", but "who is the seller and what exactly am I buying".

This article compares a marketplace with a direct farm seller for a mango gift, without running either down. It ends with checks you can use on any listing, including ours.

How to choose between a marketplace and a direct seller

Think about what matters most for this particular gift:

  • Convenience. Do you already have an account, saved addresses and a payment method on a marketplace?
  • Detail about the fruit. Do you want to know the variety, origin and how it was ripened before you pay?
  • The occasion. Is it a casual treat or something that represents you?
  • Timing. Is the date fixed, or flexible?

If convenience matters most, a marketplace may suit you. If detail about a perishable gift matters most, a seller that grows or sources the fruit and answers questions directly is worth a look.

What a marketplace offers for gifts

A marketplace is a shop window shared by many sellers. The usual strengths are real:

  • A familiar checkout and payment methods.
  • A very wide choice in one place.
  • Delivery tracking, customer reviews and a standard return process for many items.
  • Easy gifting of ordinary products to an Indian address.

For fresh mangoes, a few extra points deserve a look. On a marketplace, the fruit is packed and sent by the individual seller, not by the marketplace itself. Listings can look alike while the variety, grade and ripening method differ. Reviews describe past orders, and may be about a different season's fruit. None of this is a flaw of the marketplace. It means you should read the seller's name and the listing details carefully.

What a direct farm seller offers

A direct seller is a business that sources or grows the fruit and sells it from its own website. For a perishable gift the usual strengths are:

  • You can see the variety, origin and grade stated on the product page.
  • You can ask the seller questions and get an answer from the people who packed the fruit.
  • The seller controls harvest, ripening and packing, and is accountable for them.
  • Gift orders can be handled with a note about the recipient, where the seller offers that.

The trade-offs are also real. A single seller's website has fewer products than a marketplace. You need to trust a business you may not have used before, which is why the checks below matter. And a small seller has a smaller delivery network, so you should check the PIN code before you pay.

Side-by-side comparison

What to check Marketplace seller Direct farm seller
Who packs and sends the fruit The listed seller; confirm the name on the listing The farm seller itself
Variety and origin Stated in the listing; read it, do not assume Stated on the product page; ask if unclear
GI credential for Alphonso Ask the seller whether they hold one Ask to see the certificate number
Ripening method Ask the seller Ask the seller; we state ours below
Delivery partner and timing Set by the seller and the marketplace Set by the seller; we use Blue Dart
Damage reporting Marketplace and seller process; read it before you order Seller process; ask for the time limit
Questions before you buy Usually through the listing or a message Usually by phone or email
Seasonal availability Check the listing date and stock Check the season dates on the page

Neither column wins every row. Use the table as a list of questions, not as a score.

Five checks for any mango gift listing

  1. Seller identity. Find the business name, address and FSSAI licence. A food seller in India should be licensed.
  2. Variety and origin. Alphonso, Kesar and Pairi are different fruits. Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso both carry the Alphonso name and the GI tag.
  3. GI credential. For Alphonso, ask for the GI Authorised User certificate number. Ours is AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139), listed on the Brand Facts page.
  4. Ripening. Ask how the fruit is ripened. Calcium carbide is prohibited under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds.
  5. Delivery and damage. Ask who delivers, what the delivery window is for your PIN code and how long you have to report damage.

A water or bucket test is only a rough clue, not proof. It does not replace asking the seller.

Where we sit

We are AlphonsoMango.in, run by Powle Home Foods in Mumbai, and a direct seller. We have served 47,000+ customers, including offline and marketplace sales. We began offline sales in 2019 and online sales in 2020. Our fruit is sourced across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt on the Konkan coast, and we are FSSAI-licensed. We do not claim any specific marketplace listing in this article, and you should always check the seller name on any listing you see.

Season and delivery

Fresh Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. Our 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Outside the season we do not sell fresh Alphonso, though Alphonso pulp tins are available all year from Rs 590.

We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Check your PIN code at checkout. We do not promise a delivery date, so order ahead for the day you want. If anything arrives damaged, write to us.

What to ask any seller, anywhere

  • What is the exact variety, origin and grade?
  • How many pieces are in the box and what is the approximate weight?
  • Is the fruit ripe on arrival?
  • Who is the seller, and what is their licence number?
  • What is the full delivered price?
  • What happens if the box arrives damaged, and by when must I report it?

A dozen of ours weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. Ask every seller what their dozen weighs, so you compare like with like.

How we can help

If a direct seller sounds right, start with Ratnagiri Alphonso or Devgad Alphonso. Our Alphonso dozens start from Rs 1,849, Kesar from Rs 999 per box, and the page shows the current price. For gifts to several people or to someone abroad who sends to India, use the gift form or the NRI gifting page, and read the gifting page. See the whole range in the mango collection.

How to order (step by step)

  1. Step 1: Choose the product and size. Open Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango and pick the box size or dozen option (price from Rs 1,849; check the product page for today's price).
  2. Step 2: Add to cart. Press Add to cart, then open the cart.
  3. Step 3: Checkout and delivery. Enter your delivery address and PIN code at checkout. We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Check your PIN code at checkout.

People also ask

Can I send gifts to India through Amazon?

Yes, Amazon delivers many gifts within India, and it is convenient if you already use it. For fresh mangoes, read the listing carefully: check the seller name, variety, origin, grade and delivery window, because the fruit is packed by the individual seller and may differ from similar-looking listings.

Is it better to buy mangoes from Amazon or from a farm seller?

Neither is automatically better. A marketplace is convenient and familiar. A direct farm seller usually tells you more about the variety, origin and ripening and answers questions directly. Compare the seller, GI credential, ripening method, delivery partner and damage-reporting window before you decide.

How do I know a mango seller is genuine?

Look for a business name, address and FSSAI licence. For Alphonso, ask for the GI Authorised User certificate number. Ask how the fruit is ripened and who delivers. No single test proves authenticity, so rely on clear answers from the seller rather than on a rough clue.

Can I gift mangoes to someone in India from another country?

Yes. You can order for a recipient in India from anywhere by entering their address and PIN code. We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Check the PIN code at checkout and tell the recipient to expect the box.
