Alphonso mangoes in Mumbai: the fruit and the names

In Mumbai the same mango is called Alphonso, Hapus or Amba, depending on the family and the shop. It is the small, saffron-fleshed fruit of the Konkan coast, generally 150 to 300 g, with soft non-fibrous pulp. Most Mumbai households have an opinion on which box is right.

Choosing a dozen: size, count and weight

A dozen is twelve fruit, and the grade decides how big they are. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade, so a larger grade means a heavier box and a higher price. Pick the grade by how you plan to eat the fruit.

Devgad Alphonso Hapus mango from the Konkan coast, sold by the dozen
Which grade for which use
Use What to look for
Eating plain, cut or whole Larger grades, fewer fruit to cut, easier to share
Aamras and milkshakes Any grade works; smaller grades cost less per dozen
Gifting Even, unmarked fruit in a larger grade looks best
Off-season flavour The pulp tin, not a doubtful fresh box

Options are on Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango and Devgad Alphonso Mango, both from Rs 1,849 per dozen. Ratnagiri is a district, Devgad a taluka in Sindhudurg district; both grow the same variety, and we do not rank one above the other. Check the product page for the current price.

Mumbai occasions: Gudi Padwa, Akshaya Tritiya and family meals

Many Maharashtrian families mark the start of the mango year around Gudi Padwa or Akshaya Tritiya, and aamras with puri or chapati is a common festive meal. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027, so early fruit is possible before those dates, though supply is usually thin at the very start.

  • For a festival lunch: order a few days ahead so the fruit has time to soften. Ripening takes about 15 days from harvest, and a box arrives at mixed stages.
  • For a family of four to six: one dozen is usually a week of eating; two if aamras is on the menu every day.
  • For visiting relatives: order the dozen to arrive before they do, not on the day.

Our aamras recipe gives quantities, and mango festival in Mumbai lists a few seasonal events.

Sending Alphonso to someone in Mumbai

You can order from anywhere in India and send to a Mumbai address, or send from Mumbai to relatives elsewhere. Give the receiver the dozen size, the likely arrival message from checkout, and a note to unpack it promptly.

  • Use a reliable address: a home with a resident, an office reception or a staffed gate.
  • Order well before the date, not on it.
  • For larger or corporate orders, write to us first at support@alphonsomango.in. See mango as a corporate gift and corporate gift Alphonso mango.

Alphonso is not the only choice for a gift. Kesar is Rs 999 for a half-dozen and Rs 1,699 for a dozen.

Delivery and ripening in the city

We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Check your PIN code at checkout. We do not promise a day for Mumbai or any other city; the checkout message for your PIN code is the timing we stand behind. Shipping is shown at checkout.

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller, and fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net.

Hapus amba Mumbai — natural hay-bed ripened Alphonso Hapus mango from Konkan
  • Lay the fruit in one layer in a ventilated room, away from sun. Mumbai warmth ripens it fast.
  • A sweet smell at the stalk and slight give at the shoulder mean ripe.
  • Do not refrigerate firm fruit. Chill only soft ripe fruit.
  • Report damage within 24 hours of delivery to support@alphonsomango.in or 8369048029.

Fresh Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with best supply from March to May, and is not sold outside the season; the Alphonso mango pulp tin (from Rs 590) is available all year. See also Hapus mango price in Mumbai.

Using the whole box without waste

A dozen ripens over several days, so plan the week rather than the day. Eat the softest first, and keep the firmest at the back of the layer.

  • Days one to three: eat the ripe ones plain, cut in cheeks or sliced from the stone. Alphonso is eaten without added sugar.
  • Days three to five: turn the softest into aamras. Scoop, blend briefly with a little milk if you like, and chill.
  • Spare pulp: freeze aamras in small containers. Our mango freezer storage guide explains how.
  • Stones and skins: scrape the stone clean before discarding; plenty of pulp clings to it.

If you find that you routinely cannot finish a dozen, order a smaller grade next time or share a box with a neighbour; the fruit is at its best fresh.

Alphonso, Kesar or Pairi for a Mumbai table

Most Mumbai orders we see are for Alphonso, but the other two are worth knowing about when you want variety or a second box for guests. They are different mangoes, not cheaper copies of Alphonso.

  • Alphonso (Hapus): the Konkan classic, sold in dozens from Rs 1,849. The first choice for aamras and plain eating.
  • Kesar: a Gujarat mango with orange pulp, available as a half-dozen for Rs 999 or a dozen for Rs 1,699 on its Kesar page.
  • Pairi: from Rs 2,799 per dozen on its Pairi page.

Prices change with grade; check the product page for the current price. Only the Alphonso listings relate to the GI certificate above.
