Origin and History of the Alphanso Mango

The name derives from Afonso de Albuquerque, a Portuguese general who administered Goa in the early 16th century. Portuguese horticulturists introduced grafting techniques to the Konkan coast. Local growers in the laterite-rich soils of Ratnagiri and Devgad refined those grafts over generations. The result was a fruit unlike any other.

Why Konkan Soil Matters

The laterite soil of the Konkan coast drains well and retains just enough moisture to stress the mango tree at the right moment. Stress at flowering time concentrates sugars in the fruit. The sea breeze from the Arabian Sea moderates temperature swings. Villages like Khed, Rajapur, and Devgad taluka produce fruit that tests between 22 and 26 Brix — a sweetness level no inland mango variety reliably matches.

What Does GI No. 139 Mean for Buyers?

The Geographical Indication Registry, Chennai, issued GI No. 139 for the Alphonso (Hapus) mango of Ratnagiri and Devgad. Only growers and authorised users within the defined zone may label fruit with this tag. Powle Home Foods holds GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260, issued 16 October 2019, Registry certificate 4163. Any mango sold as "Alphonso" or "Alphanso" without this backing may be a different variety entirely.

How to Identify a Real Alphanso Mango

Many buyers ask this question after receiving fruit that looks yellow but tastes flat. Here are the checks Prashant Powle applies at the farm gate before any box is packed.

Aroma Test

Hold the mango near the stem end. A genuine Alphanso releases a room-filling tropical fragrance even before it is fully ripe. A carbide-treated or fake variety is odourless at the stem.

Colour and Skin

The skin turns a natural saffron-yellow with a faint green blush near the tip as it ripens. Carbide-ripened mangoes show uniform bright yellow with no green — the colour looks painted on.

Texture at the Stem

Press gently near the stem. A naturally ripe Alphanso yields evenly under light pressure. A hard centre with a soft outer skin signals uneven chemical ripening.

Pulp Colour and Fibre

Cut it open. The pulp is deep saffron-orange, nearly fiberless, and clings to a thin flat stone. A Kesar or other look-alike shows more fibre and a paler yellow.

Natural Hay-Bed Ripening

Every alphanso mango from our farms is ripened in a natural hay bed — a method local to the Konkan coast and unchanged for over a century. Freshly harvested fruit is layered between dry grass, which traps the fruit's own ethylene and allows even ripening at ambient temperature. No calcium carbide, no ethephon injections.

FSSAI regulations prohibit carbide ripening (FSSAI licence 10020022011783). We follow those rules and go further — our buyers can smell the difference the moment the box opens.

Why Carbide Is a Problem

Calcium carbide releases acetylene gas, which mimics ethylene but does not trigger the full enzymatic ripening cascade. The fruit yellows on the outside while the inside remains starchy and tasteless. Prolonged exposure to acetylene byproducts is a documented health concern.

Nutrition and Health Benefits of Alphanso Mango

Key Nutrients per 100 g (approx.)

  • Calories: 60–70 kcal
  • Vitamin C: 36–40 mg (40–45% of daily requirement)
  • Vitamin A (as beta-carotene): 1,080 µg
  • Folate: 43 µg
  • Potassium: 168 mg
  • Dietary fibre: 1.6 g

What Does High Brix Mean for Health?

A Brix reading of 18 to 24 indicates high soluble solids — primarily natural fructose and sucrose. The same saffron pigment that colours the pulp provides beta-carotene, a precursor to Vitamin A. These are naturally occurring compounds, not additives.

Is Alphanso Mango Good for Diabetics?

The glycaemic index of Alphonso mango is approximately 51 — moderate. Dietitians generally permit 100 g (one small mango) per sitting for people managing blood sugar, but individual responses vary. Consult your physician before adding it to a restricted diet.

Season, Availability, and When to Order

The alphanso season is short and non-negotiable. Trees flower in December and January. Fruit sets in February. The first commercial harvest from Devgad arrives in late March. Ratnagiri peaks through April and May. By mid-June, the season ends. After June, no genuine Konkan Alphanso exists anywhere in India regardless of what is marketed online.

When Is the Best Time to Order?

April is peak flavour. Fruit harvested in April has had the longest sun exposure and scores highest on Brix. Early-season fruit (late March) is available in limited quantity and sells out quickly. Order by mid-May to ensure supply before the season closes.

What Happens Off-Season?

From July through February, this product is listed as out of stock. We do not substitute with other varieties and label them Alphonso. You can register for a restock notification on each product page and we will email you when the new season opens.

No carbide, no forced ripening — just natural hay-bed maturation from 48 villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad delivers that flavour.

Why is Alphonso so expensive?

Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso trees yield once a year, from March to May, on laterite hillside orchards where coastal humidity and specific soil chemistry drive that 18 to 24 Brix sweetness. Growers hand-sort each fruit, ripen it on hay beds without carbide, and ship by air within 24 hours of packing to preserve flavour.

A short season, no shortcuts in ripening, and BlueDart air dispatch all stack up into the price you see.
