Agni Prana Prathishta
It is an essential step in any Homa (fire ritual) where the life force (Prana) is invoked into the sacred fire (Agni) to make it the central element of the ritual.
This process sanctifies the fire and allows it to act as a medium for communicating offerings to the deities and receiving blessings in return. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to perform Agni Prana Prathishta.
Preparations for Agni Prana Prathishta
- Clean and Prepare the Homa Kunda: Ensure the Homa Kunda (fire pit) is clean and ready. Place a layer of darbha grass or clean sand at the bottom of the pit.
- Gather the Materials:
- Dried cow dung cakes or wood (for lighting the fire).
- Ghee (clarified butter) for offerings.
- Camphor or cotton wicks for lighting the fire.
- Samidha (sacred wood sticks, often from mango, peepal, or other holy trees).
- Turmeric, kumkum, flowers, and incense for the puja.
- Decorate the Fire Pit: Use rice flour or turmeric powder to draw sacred symbols like swastikas or lotuses around the fire pit.
Step-by-Step Procedure for Agni Prana Prathishta
- Invoke Lord Ganesha: Before beginning the Agni Prana Prathishta, invoke Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles. Offer flowers, water, and turmeric, and chant:
- Om Shri Ganeshaya Namah.
- Invoke the Navagrahas: Pay homage to the Navagrahas (nine planets) to ensure cosmic harmony in the ritual. You can chant the Navagraha stotram or offer a simple prayer by reciting:
- Om Navagrahaya Namah.
- Lighting the Agni (Fire):
- Arrange the cow dung cakes or wood neatly in the Homa Kunda.
- Place camphor or cotton dipped in ghee in the centre to ignite the fire.
- Light the camphor and gently blow on the flame to help it spread to the wood.
- Once the fire is lit, offer ghee into the fire while chanting:
- Om Agnaye Svaha (offer a drop of ghee into the fire).
- Agni Avahan (Invoking the Fire Deity): After the fire is lit, invoke Lord Agni, the fire deity, to make the fire sacred. Chant the following mantra to invite the presence of Agni:
- Om Agnaye Namah, Agnim Avahayami (I invoke Lord Agni).
Offer flowers and ghee into the fire.
- Prana Prathishta (Infusing Life into the Fire): Now that Agni is invoked, the next step is to infuse Prana (life force) into the fire to make it the living entity of the ritual. Sit with concentration, face the fire, and chant the following mantra while mentally visualising the life force entering the fire:
- Om Agnaye Prana Prathishtapaya Svaha (May Lord Agni receive the life force).
You can use the following extended mantra:
- Om Bhooh, Bhuvah, Svah, Pranaya Agnaye Svaha.
After chanting this, offer a spoonful of ghee into the fire to symbolise this infusion of Prana.
- Offering Samidha (Sacred Wood): Now that the fire is sanctified and infused with Prana, offer Samidha (sacred wood sticks) into the fire. Each time you offer a stick, chant:
- Om Agnaye Idam Namama (This offering is for Agni, not me).
Offer as many sticks as is required for the ritual. Traditionally, 11 or 21 sticks are offered.
- Offering the Five Elements (Pancha Bhuta): The five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and space) are symbolically offered into the Agni to harmonise them with the universal energies. You can chant:
- Om Prithivyai Svaha (Earth).
- Om Apah Svaha (Water).
- Om Tejase Svaha (Fire).
- Om Vayave Svaha (Air).
- Om Akashaya Svaha (Space).
Offer a spoonful of ghee with each chant, symbolising these elements.
- Chanting Agni Mantras: As part of Agni Prana Prathishta, you can chant the following Vedic mantras for Agni:
- Om Agnimeele Purohitam Yajnasya Devam Ritvijam, Hotaram Ratna Dhataram ||
Meaning: "I extol Agni, the divine priest, the minister of the sacrifice, and the bestower of treasures."
- Om Svaahakritam Agnim Prahinomya Ranye Lokam.
- Offering Ghee and Other Sacrificial Items (Ahuti): As the final step of the Agni Prana Prathishta, offer ghee and other ritual materials like grains or herbs into the fire. The mantra should accompany each offering:
- Om Agnaye Svaha (offer the item into the fire).
Continue offering the items reverently until the fire consumes all the Ahuti materials.
- Pradakshina (Circumambulation): After completing the offerings, walk around the Homa Kunda three times in a clockwise direction, showing reverence to Agni.
Concluding the Agni Prana Prathishta:
Once the offerings are made and the fire has settled, you can conclude the ritual by bowing down to Lord Agni and offering a final prayer for success in the Homa. You may chant:
- Om Agnaye Namah, Agnaye Pranamasmi (I bow to Agni).
This completes the Agni Prana Prathishta, ensuring the fire is sanctified and ready for the main Homa ritual.
Light the Homa fire in the Homa Kund and invoke Agni (the fire god) with the mantra:
'Om Agnaye Swaha'. Offer ghee and sesame seeds into the fire.

Offer ghee and grains into the fire 108 times, chanting Lakshmi and Kubera mantras for each offering. This amplifies the blessings of wealth and protection.
8. Purnahuti (Final Offering)
Mix all remaining ingredients (ghee, grains, flowers) into one offering and offer it as the final Purnahuti while chanting the concluding mantras.
