A grilled mango slice takes 2–3 minutes per side on a medium grill and works best with Alphonso mangoes at 18–24° Brix — the natural sugar range of GI No. 139 certified fruit from Ratnagiri and Devgad, available March to June.
Buy Alphonso Mangoes for Grilling
Grilling works best with firm-ripe Alphonso. Fruit dispatched at 70–80% ripeness — the standard we follow — arrives with enough firmness to slice cleanly and hold its shape on the grill without turning to mush. By day two or three after delivery, it is at perfect eating ripeness, which is also the right moment to grill.
Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which Grills Better?

For grilling, Devgad fruit at 24° Brix caramelises faster and darker. Ratnagiri at 18–20° gives you more control — the sugars brown without burning if you look away for a moment. Both work. Your grill temperature is the deciding variable.
Repeat-order data from our 47,000+ customers shows north India tends to favour Ratnagiri, while Mumbai leans Devgad. For grilling specifically, if your grill runs hot, start with Ratnagiri.
How to Make Grilled Mango Slices
Ingredients
- 1 ripe Alphonso mango (firm-ripe, not fully soft)
- 1 tablespoon mustard oil or cold-pressed coconut oil
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper or chilli flakes
- Optional: a squeeze of lime, a pinch of chaat masala
Step-by-step instructions
- Preheat your grill or grill pan to medium heat — roughly 180–200°C. Too high and the sugars scorch before the flesh warms through.
- Slice the mango cheeks away from the stone. Cut each cheek into 1 cm thick slices. Thinner than that and they collapse on the grate.
- Brush both sides lightly with oil. Season with salt and pepper.
- Place slices on the grill. Cook 2–3 minutes per side. You want visible char marks and the flesh to feel slightly giving when pressed — not fully soft.
- Remove and rest for 60 seconds before serving. The residual heat carries them the rest of the way.
Mango kabobs and BBQ variations
Thread grilled mango slices onto skewers with zucchini, bell pepper and paneer. Glaze with a teriyaki or tamarind sauce. Or blend two charred mango cheeks with tomatoes, vinegar and jaggery for a BBQ sauce that works on anything from chicken to jackfruit. Grilled Alphonso in a salsa — mangoes, tomatoes, red onion, coriander, lime — sits alongside fish in a way that plain fresh mango does not.
Nutrition in Grilled Mango Slices
Grilling does not destroy the key nutrients in mango — heat-sensitive vitamin C drops slightly, but fibre and beta-carotene remain largely intact. A 100 g serving of ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C, which covers about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Factor in a small reduction from grilling and you are still getting a meaningful contribution from one serving.
| Nutrient | Amount (approx. per 100 g fresh Alphonso pulp) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Calories | ~60 kcal | Low calorie density |
| Total fat | 0 g | Oil added in recipe is separate |
| Cholesterol | 0 mg | — |
| Vitamin C | 30–36 mg | 40–50% ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA depending on sex |
| Beta-carotene (Vit A precursor) | Present, heat-stable | Survives grilling well |
| Dietary fibre | ~1.6 g | Heat-stable |
| Mangiferin | Present in pulp and peel | Anti-inflammatory activity noted in Govindappa et al., 2011 (cell study) |
One honest limit: Alphonso is a seasonal fruit. We dispatch from March to June only. There is no fresh Alphonso available from July to January. Plan your summer grilling menus accordingly.
Ways to Serve Grilled Mango Slices
Pairing and plating ideas
- Alongside grilled chicken or fish — the char on both makes them speak the same flavour language.
- Over thick yoghurt with crushed pistachios and a drizzle of honey. The contrast of cool and warm is what makes this worth doing.
- In a salad with greens, avocado, cucumber and a lime dressing. Grilled mango holds up better than fresh slices because the exterior is sealed.
- Blended into a mango smoothie — two grilled cheeks, banana, yoghurt, a pinch of cardamom. The char adds a mild smokiness that fresh mango does not give.
- As a dessert: grilled mango slice on vanilla ice cream, finished with chaat masala. Simple, but the Alphonso's 18–24° Brix means it needs nothing else.
Grilled mango salsa
Dice two grilled cheeks. Mix with one chopped tomato, half a red onion, a handful of fresh coriander and the juice of one lime. Salt to taste. This salsa from Alphonso fruit — sourced from villages like Golap and Pawas in Ratnagiri taluka — is noticeably different from one made with generic supermarket mangoes. The Brix is higher, the fibre finer, and the pulp less watery, so the salsa holds its texture.
Delivery Across India
Transit windows and packaging
Orders are dispatched via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Metro cities receive fruit within 20–24 hours of dispatch. Most other cities in India receive within 1–3 days. We service 15,000–17,000 pin codes.
Each box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard courier-grade box with 12-slot partitions that absorb transit pressure so the fruit does not. Every mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm) on a hay bed. Six air holes top and bottom keep airflow moving during the ripening window after delivery. For grilling, this matters: fruit that arrives bruised or compressed will not hold a clean slice on the grill.
If fruit arrives damaged in transit, photograph or video it within 24 hours of delivery and send via WhatsApp. No physical return is needed. We replace with a fresh dispatch or credit your account for the next order.
How to Order
- Step 1 — Select grade. Visit our mango collection and choose between Ratnagiri Alphonso, Devgad Alphonso or Kesar. Pick the weight grade (Small 150–180 g, Medium 180–225 g, Extra Large 250–275 g, or Jumbo 275–300 g) that suits your grilling plan — Extra Large and Jumbo give you thicker slices that hold up better on the grate.
- Step 2 — Add to cart. Choose your box size: half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen. For a summer grilling session with four to six people, one dozen Extra Large Alphonso covers a generous round of grilled slices plus some to eat fresh.
- Step 3 — Dispatch. We send by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Most Indian cities receive within 1–3 days. Pre-orders can be cancelled before dispatch — after that, the fruit is already moving.
Authenticity and Ripening
Prashant Powle founded AlphonsoMango.in in 2017. Powle Home Foods, the operating entity, was registered in July 2019 and ran its first full commercial season in 2020. Every Alphonso we dispatch is GI No. 139 certified fruit, sourced from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts — including orchards in Devgad, Girye, Golap, Pawas and Nachane, among others. We hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019), FSSAI licence 10020022011783 and APEDA registration 225579.
Ripening is natural hay-bed (Aadi) only, in temperature-controlled rooms at our Mumbai packhouse — no ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. Fruit is independently tested for pesticide residues by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284). The April 2025 report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) confirmed all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification. We do not claim pesticide-free — one residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a permitted limit of 0.2 mg/kg.
Every fruit is weighed, graded and scanned by AI/ML-assisted machine before packing. The harvest uses a Nutan/Zela pole with a catching net — the tree is never shaken and fruit never falls to the ground, which would cause the internal bruising that shows up as spongy tissue after grilling.

People Also Ask
How do you grill mango slices?
Preheat a grill or grill pan to 180–200°C. Slice firm-ripe Alphonso cheeks into 1 cm thick pieces — thinner and they fall apart. Brush both sides with mustard oil, season with salt and pepper, and cook 2–3 minutes per side until char marks appear and the flesh gives slightly when pressed. Rest 60 seconds before serving.
Alphonso fruit dispatched at 70–80% ripeness is firm enough to slice cleanly and hold its shape on the grate — day two or three after delivery is the right moment.
Are mangos good grilled?
Yes, and Alphonso at 18–24° Brix makes the strongest case. The natural sugars caramelise fast, producing char marks and a concentrated sweetness that raw mango does not have. Devgad Alphonso at the upper Brix range browns deeper; Ratnagiri at 18–20° gives you more control if your grill runs hot. Two to three minutes per side is all it takes.
Grilling also seals the exterior, so slices hold up better in salads and salsas than fresh-cut fruit does.
What is slice mango?
A slice mango is a mango cut into flat, even pieces rather than diced or pulped. For Alphonso, the standard cut is to slice the two cheeks away from the flat stone, then cut each cheek lengthwise into 1 cm strips. This shape grills evenly, holds together on a grate, and works in salads, skewers and desserts without turning watery.
Firm-ripe fruit — dispatched at 70–80% ripeness — slices cleanly; fully soft fruit collapses under the knife and on the grill.
Why do I feel so good after eating mango?
Ripe Alphonso pulp delivers roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g, covering about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 daily allowance for adult men and about 50% for adult women. It also contains mangiferin, a polyphenol with anti-inflammatory activity noted in Govindappa et al., 2011, plus natural sugars that raise blood glucose quickly after a gap between meals.
GI No. 139 certified Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad, ripened on hay without carbide, carries these compounds at full potency because the fruit is never forced or cold-stored before dispatch.
Order GI-certified Alphonso mangoes this season — ideal for grilling, eating fresh, or gifting.
