Buying Gir Kesar mango online
Kesar is the mango most Gujarati families reach for first, and it has become one of the most searched mangoes in India. People type it as Kesar mango, Kesar keri, Kesar aam or Gir Kesar, and they mean the same fruit: a medium-sized mango with orange pulp and a strong fragrance. We list it next to our Alphonso so that you can order both from one place.

We sell Kesar by the box, not by the kilo. The box starts from Rs 999, and the product page shows each size and its price. Many buyers ask for a per-kilo rate because that is how local fruit shops quote, but a per-kilo number depends on how many mangoes of what size go into the weighing pan, so comparing it with a boxed price can mislead you. Count the pieces and read the grade before you compare.
Our Kesar page is Kesar Mango. Our Alphonso pages are Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango and Devgad Alphonso Mango. If you want one sweet-and-aromatic box and one rich-and-creamy box, order one of each and compare them at home.
Kesar or Alphonso: which should you order?
This is the question we get most, and the honest answer is that it depends on what you want from the fruit. Both are loved, and neither is a copy of the other. The table sets out the points that matter when you order.

| Point | Gir Kesar | Alphonso (Hapus) |
|---|---|---|
| Home region | Gujarat, around Gir and Junagadh | Ratnagiri and Devgad belt, Konkan, Maharashtra |
| Pulp | Saffron-orange, which gives the fruit its name | Described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous |
| Price on our site | From Rs 999 per box | From Rs 1,849 per dozen |
| Usually bought for | Eating fresh, aamras, milkshakes | Eating fresh, desserts, gifting |
| Order page | Kesar Mango | Ratnagiri Alphonso |
If you plan to make aamras for a large family, Kesar is a popular choice and is easy on the budget. If you are choosing a gift, Alphonso is the fruit most people expect to receive. Our longer note on this choice is in where to buy authentic Kesar mango.
Where Gir Kesar comes from

Gir Kesar is a Gujarat mango. It is grown around the Gir forest and Junagadh in Saurashtra, and Talala is one of the places most often named for it. The word Kesar means saffron in Hindi and Gujarati, and it points to the colour of the pulp.
Kesar is said to have been grown in 1931 by the Junagadh Wazir Sale Bhai, and is said to have been known as Kesar since 1934, when the Nawab of Junagadh remarked on its orange pulp. We keep the "said to" because it is a story told about the variety, and stories of this kind are hard to prove. What is easy to see is the colour when you cut the fruit open.
Because Kesar is a Gujarat fruit and Alphonso is a Konkan fruit, a seller who offers both from one shop is buying from two regions. Ask any seller which region a box came from, and ask for the answer in writing. For our Alphonso we source from 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt, and our Alphonso credentials are on the Brand Facts page.
Taste, colour and aroma
People most often describe Kesar as aromatic and sweet, with a smooth pulp that is good for blending. The skin stays greenish-yellow when the fruit is ripe, so skin colour is a poor ripeness signal for this variety. Trust the smell near the stalk and a slight give when you press the shoulder gently.
- Colour: deep orange pulp, closer to saffron than the pale gold of many mangoes.
- Aroma: a strong fruity smell, easiest to notice near the stalk.
- Texture: soft and juicy, which is why Kesar is a favourite for aamras and shakes.
Taste is personal. If you have only eaten one of the two varieties, the best way to decide is to eat both side by side, from the same seller, at the same stage of ripeness.
Price and box sizes
Kesar on our site starts from Rs 999 per box, and the product page lists the box sizes and what each costs. Alphonso starts from Rs 1,849 per dozen. A dozen of Alphonso weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. We do not publish a per-kilo figure, because grade and count change the weight of a box. Check the product page for the price of the size you want.
If you are comparing sellers, ask these questions:
- How many mangoes are in the box, and what is the grade?
- Which region did the fruit come from?
- How was it ripened?
- Who delivers it, and how long does the courier take to your PIN code?
GST: there is no GST on fresh mangoes, and the invoice shows this.
Ripening, and what to ask any seller

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Selling fruit ripened with calcium carbide gas is prohibited in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. Put the same question to any seller of Kesar: how was the fruit ripened, and can they say so in writing?
At home, keep the mangoes at room temperature in a single layer, away from direct sun. Check them daily by smell and by a gentle press at the shoulder. Once a fruit is as soft as you like it, you can move it to the fridge for a short time. Do not refrigerate hard, unripe fruit, because it will not ripen well afterwards.
Mangoes are a source of vitamin C. 100 g of raw mango provides about 36 mg of vitamin C, roughly 40% of the Daily Value. That figure is for mango in general, not for Kesar in particular. If you have diabetes or another condition, ask your doctor or dietitian how much mango suits you.

Ways to use Kesar
Kesar is the usual choice for aamras, served with hot puri or rotli. It also works in milkshakes, lassi, kulfi and mango sheera. The ripe fruit can be blended and chilled in minutes. For measured quantities, read our aamras recipe. APEDA lists Kesar among the mango varieties used for pulp, which is another sign of how well the fruit blends.
Season and off-season options
Fresh Kesar is a seasonal fruit. On our store the fresh mango listings, Kesar included, show as unavailable until the 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. If you open this page outside the season, you can still plan your order, read the product page and check delivery for your PIN code in advance.
What you can order all year is our Alphonso Mango Pulp Tin, in 850 g and 3.1 kg tins, from Rs 590. It is Alphonso pulp, not Kesar, so it suits recipes where you want that richer, creamier flavour.
