Indulge in Sweetness RatnagiriMangoes - AlphonsoMango.in

Ratnagiri mangoes are Alphonso (Hapus) grown in Ratnagiri district on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, GI-certified under GI No. 139. AlphonsoMango.in sells them by the dozen from Rs 1,849, ripened on hay beds and sent by Blue Dart. The 2027 season opens 1 February.

What Ratnagiri mangoes are

Ratnagiri mangoes are Alphonso, the variety Maharashtra calls Hapus, grown in Ratnagiri district. Ratnagiri is a district on the Konkan coast, the strip of western India between the Arabian Sea and the Deccan Plateau. Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India under GI No. 139, and we hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139).

Sweetness Of Ratnagiri Mangoes

We are Powle Home Foods in Mumbai, and we run AlphonsoMango.in. Our fruit comes from across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt. We have sold mangoes since 2019, online since 2020, and have served 47,000+ customers, including offline and marketplace sales. Our Ratnagiri Alphonso Mango page lists the sizes on offer, and the mango collection shows everything else we sell.

The name Alphonso comes from Afonso de Albuquerque; mango grafting was introduced in Portuguese Goa by Jesuit missionaries. Indian-group mango cultivars are monoembryonic, so Alphonso is propagated by grafting rather than from seed. That is why fruit from a Ratnagiri orchard is the same variety as fruit from Devgad, a taluka in neighbouring Sindhudurg district.

Why Ratnagiri mangoes taste the way they do

Alphonso pulp is described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous. The fruit is small, generally 150 to 300 g, with a thin skin and a deep orange flesh. The sweetness has a little acidity behind it, which is why it works in aamras, in kulfi and simply cut on a plate. A Brix reading, which is 1 g of dissolved solids per 100 g of solution as measured by a refractometer, is the trade measure of that sweetness; our Brand Facts page publishes the range we work to.

  • Aroma: a sweet, fruity smell that is strongest near the stalk as the fruit ripens.
  • Texture: no strings; the flesh cuts cleanly from the seed.
  • Colour: often uneven on a naturally ripened fruit, with green, gold and a blush on one mango.

We do not claim that Ratnagiri fruit is sweeter than Devgad fruit or the other way round. Both are Alphonso, and sweetness varies with ripeness and the point in the season more than with the name on the box. Our Ratnagiri and Devgad Hapus guide says the same in more detail.

How we harvest and ripen Ratnagiri mangoes

Our fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, so the mango is neither dropped nor shaken from the tree. Harvest is done at Brahma Muhurta, the pre-dawn hours. Harvest to ripening of Alphonso takes about 15 days.

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Calcium carbide is prohibited for ripening fruit in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011; ethylene up to 100 ppm is the permitted alternative. We are an FSSAI-licensed seller.

No home test proves how a mango was ripened. The bucket-of-water test is a rough clue, not proof. Ask any seller how they ripen their fruit; a plain answer is what you want. Our guide on spotting carbide-ripened mangoes lists the questions, and how to identify an Alphonso mango covers the fruit itself.

Ripening, storing and cutting at home

A box can arrive with a mix of ripe and firm fruit. Lay the mangoes in one layer at room temperature, away from direct sun, and check them daily. A sweet smell at the stalk and a slight give at the shoulder mean the fruit is ready. Do not refrigerate firm fruit; cold slows ripening and dulls the aroma. Once ripe, eat the mango soon or chill it briefly, and keep cut fruit in a closed container in the fridge.

Mangoes bought in bulk for a function need the same care: open every box on arrival, separate the ripe fruit from the firm, and plan to use the ripe ones first. Firm fruit left in a closed box will ripen faster than fruit laid out in the open, so decide which you want.

To cut, stand the mango on its end and slice down either side of the flat seed, then score the cheeks and turn them out. Our pages on ripening Alphonso at home and how to cut a mango show each step.

In the kitchen, Ratnagiri Alphonso goes into aamras, amrakhand, milkshakes, kulfi and plain mango with chapati or puri. Our aamras recipe is a simple start. On nutrition, 100 g of raw mango provides about 36 mg of vitamin C, roughly 40% of the Daily Value; mango also carries natural sugars, so if you manage a health condition ask your doctor or dietitian how much suits you.
