Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which to Choose?

Both carry the same GI number. The difference is in where they grow and, by the end of the season, in Brix. Order-data from 47,000+ customers shows north India leans Ratnagiri; Mumbai buyers lean Devgad. Neither is objectively better — they suit different palates.

Delivery Across India

Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive transit, ripening fully within about three days of delivery. From harvest to your door takes 48–72 hours plus transit.

The supply chain runs like this: roughly 2 hours from orchard to the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, post-harvest cooling there, 10–12 hours by air-conditioned vehicle to the Mumbai packhouse, 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening, then dispatch. Metro cities receive fruit in 20–24 hours. Most other Indian cities: 1–3 days. We reach 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes.

Courier allocation depends on your pin code: BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees. You cannot choose the courier yourself — the system picks the fastest option for your location.

Each box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard (CFB) courier-grade carton, 130 gsm paper, alternate flute orientation, reinforced corners. Every fruit sits in a foam-net sleeve on a hay bed inside a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure so the mangoes don't. Six air holes top and bottom keep airflow going during the final ripening days. Box sizes are 3.5 kg and 4 kg.

Transit damage or quality failures are replaced with a fresh dispatch or credited to your account. Report within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video on WhatsApp. No physical return required.

We do not dispatch fresh Alphonso July through January. That is a hard stop — not a supply choice.

How to Order

  1. Step 1 — Select your variety and grade. Choose Ratnagiri Alphonso (₹1849–₹5399) or Devgad Alphonso (₹1849–₹5499) and pick your grade: Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g). Box options are half dozen, one dozen or two dozen.
  2. Step 2 — Add to cart and confirm your address. Check that your pin code is serviceable. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.
  3. Step 3 — We dispatch. BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees picks up the order depending on your pin code. Tracking details come by email and SMS. Delivery takes 1–3 days for most Indian cities, 20–24 hours for metros.

Where the Fruit Comes From

Alphonso mango orchard in Konkan — mango shop sourcing villages Ratnagiri and Devgad

Prashant Powle founded AlphonsoMango.in in 2017 and built sourcing relationships across 55 named villages in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. These are not aggregated random lots. Each village has specific orchard families, typically growing trees 12–25 years old, selected on Brix consistency and alternate-bearing management.

On the Sindhudurg side, fruit comes from Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Hindale, Naringre and 18 other villages in Devgad taluka, plus Achara, Tondavali, Kochare, Mochemad and Shiroda in Malvan and Vengurla talukas. On the Ratnagiri side: Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade and nine other villages in Ratnagiri taluka, and Rajapur, Bankot, Jaitapur and ten more villages across Rajapur, Lanja and Mandangad talukas.

Fruit is hand-harvested using a Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting blade. The tree is never shaken. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera guides the cut. A fallen mango is a bruised mango — bruising worsens spongy tissue, so this matters more than it sounds.

After harvest, every fruit is weighed and graded. AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal conditions (including spongy tissue) and external deformities before packing. Packing happens at the Malvan packing centre or Devgad packing point.

What does GI Tag No. 139 mean for a buyer?

GI Tag No. 139 covers Alphonso mangoes from Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts only. A mango grown outside this zone cannot legally carry the Alphonso GI tag. Powle Home Foods holds Authorised User status AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019) for Ratnagiri and AU/6932 for Devgad. When you buy from this mango shop, you can verify both numbers against the GI Registry.

Ripening: Why No Carbide

Natural hay-bed ripening of Alphonso mangoes at the Mumbai packhouse — no carbide, no ethylene

The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is natural ripening on a hay bed (called Aadi in Konkan practice), in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind.

Calcium carbide ripening shortens the ripening cycle to under 12 hours and produces uniform colour, but the flavour does not develop the same way. Brix in carbide-ripened fruit peaks lower and drops faster. Natural hay-bed ripening lets the fruit finish converting starches on its own schedule — which is why Alphonso from this shop hits 18–24° Brix at full ripeness, a range measured at the packhouse before dispatch.

Pesticide residues are tested weekly through the season by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284). The April 2025 report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) tested 28 residues: 27 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg); thiamethoxam came in at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. All residues were within Codex maximum residue limits. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits" — not "pesticide-free", because one residue was detected, within limits.

Season and Availability

The Alphonso season runs February to June, with peak supply in March and April. By July, trees are done. We carry no fresh Alphonso inventory July through January. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

The 2025 season was difficult. Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on the weather and yield challenges facing Alphonso growers that season. Volumes varied sharply by village — Golap and Pawas in Ratnagiri, and Jamsande in Devgad, were among the more stable sources that year.

Kesar mango from Gir (GI Tag No. 185) is also available on the site when in season, sourced from Junagadh and Gir region. It is a different fruit, different GI, different flavour profile.

Nutrition

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily intake for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). These figures use the 2020 ICMR-NIN RDA — the 2010 figure of 40 mg/day is superseded and no longer accurate.

Mangiferin, a bioactive compound found in mango pulp, showed anti-inflammatory activity in a 2011 cell study (Govindappa et al., 2011). This was a cell study, not a human trial — we cite it for what it is, not as a health claim.

Alphonso puree suits babies from about 6 months as an introduced food. This is a serving suggestion, not medical advice.

People Also Ask

Are there any Mango stores in the USA?

AlphonsoMango.in ships Alphonso mangoes to the US during the Indian season, February to June, through APEDA-registered export channels. Inside the US, some Indian grocery stores carry Alphonso during peak season, but verified GI-tagged fruit from Ratnagiri or Devgad shipped direct from India gives you a shorter chain and traceable sourcing.

What country is Mango Store from?

AlphonsoMango.in is an Indian mango shop, founded in 2017 by Prashant Powle and operated by Powle Home Foods, based in Maharashtra. The fruit is sourced from 55 villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts on the Konkan coast — both districts fall within the GI-protected zone for Alphonso, GI No. 139.

Why is Mango Store so expensive?

GI-tagged Alphonso from Ratnagiri or Devgad costs more than market mangoes because every fruit is hand-harvested, individually weighed, graded, AI-scanned for spongy tissue, foam-sleeved, hay-bed ripened without carbide, and couriered in a 5-ply reinforced box within 48–72 hours of harvest. You are paying for provenance, handling precision and cold-chain speed, not just the fruit.
