The variety is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, a distinguished militarian and viceroy of Portuguese India from 1509 to 1515.

Jesuit missionaries introduced grafting on mango trees in Portuguese Goa to produce varieties like Alphonso. In 1563, Garcia da Orta wrote of Alphonsos grown in Portuguese Bombay, to be presented to the governor (ruler) in Goa.

The Devgad Alphonso, also known as the hapus amba, is highly sought after for its carbide-free nature, making it one of India's most expensive and desirable varieties of mangoes.

It has now become available in Ahmedabad, much to the delight of aam lovers in the city.

These mangoes have global appeal and are in high demand, not only within India but also internationally.

They are exported to various countries, such as the United Kingdom (UK) and the Middle East, where their exceptional flavour and quality are highly cherished. The United States is another prominent market for these mangoes, which are also highly valued.

The Devgad Alfanso mangos weigh between 130 and 350 grams (4.5 and 12.3 oz) and have a rich, creamy, tender texture and delicate, non-fibrous, juicy mango pulp.
