Siliguri sits close to the Mahananda river, ringed by tea gardens and hill roads. None of that geography grows Alphonso — the GI boundary runs from Ratnagiri to Sindhudurg on the Konkan coast, roughly 2,100 km away. That distance is why the right courier and the right ripeness window matter so much.

Ratnagiri vs Devgad — Which to Order

Based on repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers, north-east India — where Siliguri sits — tends toward Ratnagiri fruit. That said, if you want the sweetest possible finish at full ripeness, Devgad at the upper Brix end is worth trying for a second order.

Delivery Across India

Fresh mangoes packed for delivery to Siliguri and north-east India

Fruit leaves the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse within about two hours of harvest. It travels by air-conditioned vehicle — roughly 10–12 hours — to the Mumbai packhouse, where it rests on a hay bed for 24–48 hours of natural ripening in a temperature-controlled room. Total harvest-to-dispatch time: 48–72 hours.

Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes. We service 15,000–17,000 pin codes across India via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees — which courier you get depends on your pin code.

Every box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard (CFB) unit, 130 gsm paper, with a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure so the fruit does not. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm, length 100–120 mm by fruit size) on a hay/straw bed. Six air holes on the top and bottom panels keep airflow going during the ripening phase after delivery.

Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive the journey, fully ripe within about three days of delivery.

One honest limit: we do not deliver fresh Alphonso July through January. The season ends in June. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

How to Order

  1. Select your mango: Go to alphonsomango.in/collections/mangoes and choose Ratnagiri Alphonso, Devgad Alphonso or Kesar by grade — Small, Medium, Extra Large or Jumbo.
  2. Add to cart: Pick half dozen, one dozen or two dozen. If you are ordering as a gift (18% of our orders are), add the delivery address at checkout — we can dispatch to a different address.
  3. Confirm and dispatch: We assign BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your Siliguri pin code. You get a tracking link.

If transit damage occurs, photograph the fruit and packaging and send it to us on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery. No physical return is needed. We dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next purchase.

Where the Fruit Comes From

Alphonso mango orchards in Ratnagiri, sourced for delivery to Siliguri

Powle Home Foods sources from 48 coastal villages of Ratnagiri and Devgad. In Devgad taluka that includes villages like Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Girye and Kunkeshwar — sea-facing orchards, most of them 12–25 years old. In Ratnagiri taluka we work with Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mirya and Kalbadevi, among others. Fruit from Rajapur and Lanja talukas — Jaitapur, Anjarle, Velneshwar, Velas — rounds out the northern range.

Prashant Powle selects partner orchards on three criteria: Brix consistency across the season, tree longevity (older trees produce more concentrated flavour), and how the farmer manages alternate bearing. We work with 100+ partner farmer families. Cultivation follows fixed SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers are applied from flowering to harvest.

Harvesting is done by hand using a Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net and a cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. For tall trees, we use an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera. Fruit never falls.

After harvest, fruit goes through a controlled hot-water treatment to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life. Then cooling at the packhouse before the AC vehicle departs for Mumbai.

AI-assisted grading before every box leaves

Every fruit is weighed and graded. An AI/ML-assisted machine scan checks each mango for internal defects — including spongy tissue — and external deformities. Only fruit that passes goes into a box. We assumed grading by weight alone would be sufficient in our early seasons; the AI scanner changed that assumption by catching spongy-tissue cases that looked fine on the outside.

How We Ripen — and What We Refuse to Do

The only ripening method we use is natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening in temperature-controlled rooms at the Mumbai packhouse. The 24–48 hours the fruit spends there is monitored, not gas-triggered. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind.

Pesticide residue is tested weekly through the season by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane — NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284. The most recent report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) covered 28 residues. All were within Codex maximum residue limits. Twenty-seven of the 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One — thiamethoxam — was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits." We do not say "pesticide-free."

Nutrition at a Glance

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day).

Mangoes also contain mangiferin, a polyphenol antioxidant. Govindappa et al. (2011) demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity for mangiferin in cell studies. That is a cell study, not a clinical trial — we state it accurately and leave the clinical leap to researchers.

Alphonso pulp is suitable as a first fruit for babies from about 6 months — this is a serving suggestion, not medical advice. The Aamras and mango pulp we sell carry the same sourcing and ripening standards as the fresh fruit.

Season and Availability

The Alphonso season runs February to June, with the peak from March to May. Outside those months, fresh Alphonso is simply not available from any honest source — the tree does not produce year-round and no cold-store blending extends genuine GI fruit. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

Kesar from the Gir region (GI No. 185, Junagadh) runs on a slightly different calendar. Check the collection page for current availability.

The Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — a district-product recognition, not a brand award, but it reflects the origin we source from.
