Buy NowWe do not sell afus aam July through March. If you see "Alphonso" listed in October on a marketplace, it is not from Konkan — the trees simply do not fruit then. That is one fact no retailer advertising year-round stock will tell you plainly.
Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Price Comparison
| Parameter | Ratnagiri Alphonso | Devgad Alphonso |
|---|---|---|
| GI Status | GI No. 139 certified | GI No. 139 certified |
| Brix (avg sweetness) | 18 to 24°Bx | 18 to 24°Bx |
| Season window | Mid-March to late May | April to mid-June |
| Typical fruit weight | 200–250 g | 220–280 g |
| Indicative ₹ range (per dozen) | ₹500–₹1,800 | ₹800–₹3,000+ |
| Fibre content | Low (fiberless pulp) | Very low (fiberless pulp) |
| Skin colour at peak ripeness | Saffron yellow | Deep golden yellow |
Devgad fruit typically commands ₹200–₹500 more per dozen than equivalent Ratnagiri grades because the Devgad coastal microclimate — red laterite soil, shorter days, higher humidity — concentrates sugars more. That gap widens in April when early Ratnagiri supply floods mandis but Devgad orchards are still holding fruit on the tree.
Delivery Across India
We dispatch via BlueDart air freight only. Cut-off for same-day dispatch is 11 AM IST on weekdays. Transit windows by zone:
- Mumbai, Pune, Nashik: next day
- Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai: 1–2 days
- Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Surat: 1–2 days
- Northeast India, Jammu, remote pincodes: 2–3 days
Each box is packed in a ventilated corrugated carton with dry hay bedding — the same method orchardists in Vengurla and Rajapur have used for generations. No gel ice, no foam peanuts. The hay regulates moisture and protects skin without trapping ethylene. Fruit arrives at the cusp of ripeness, ready to eat within 24–48 hours of delivery.
For export orders to the US, UK, UAE, Singapore, and Japan, contact us via the export form. Air freight timelines and phytosanitary requirements differ by destination.

What Is Afus Aam?
Afus aam is the Urdu and Gujarati name for Alphonso mango — the same fruit Maharashtrians call Hapus, the same fruit the Portuguese brought to Konkan coastal villages in the 1500s. The word traces back to Afonso de Albuquerque, the Portuguese colonial administrator credited with grafting this variety into Indian horticulture.
The name changes with geography. Gujarati traders say afus. Mumbaikars say hapus. Export markets say Alphonso. The fruit is identical: fiberless, saffron-gold, intensely sweet pulp with Brix readings between 22 and 26 degrees depending on the orchard's microclimate.
What does GI tag mean for afus aam price?
GI No. 139 (Registry Certificate 4163, issued 16 October 2019) restricts use of the "Alphonso" name to fruit grown in a defined Konkan geographic zone. We hold GI Authorised User status AU/5974/GI/139/260 under Powle Home Foods. That credential means every box we sell is traceable to a specific orchard cluster in one of our 48 source villages.
When you buy non-GI "Alphonso" from unlicensed sellers, you are buying a different fruit at the same name. The afus aam price difference between genuine GI fruit and imitations is real — and so is the taste gap.
What Drives the Alphonso Mango Rate Today
Four things move the afus aam price within a single season:
1. Harvest timing. Early-season fruit (mid-March) is scarce and commands ₹1,500–₹3,000 per dozen for premium grades. By late April, supply increases and rates soften. By June, fruit from high-altitude orchards in Devgad arrives last — small volume, deep sweetness, high price again.
2. Rainfall and flowering. A dry January–February produces strong flowering set. Unseasonal rain in February damages flowers and cuts yield, pushing prices up. In 2024, late-season rain near Rajapur reduced Ratnagiri output by roughly 20%, which held prices firm through May.
3. Grade and size. We grade on weight. Large fruit (270 g+) sells at a premium because a single mango yields more pulp per piece. Export-grade fruit goes through an additional hand-sorting round by Prashant Powle's team before packing.
4. Freight cost. BlueDart air freight is not cheap. A box travelling from our Ratnagiri dispatch point to Delhi adds ₹80–₹150 in logistics cost versus a Mumbai delivery. That cost is transparent in your checkout — we do not hide it in the fruit price.
Mandi rate vs online alphonso mango rate — which is lower?
Mandi prices at Dadar (Mumbai) or Masjid Bunder typically run ₹400–₹1,200 per dozen depending on grade. Online prices look higher but include cold-chain logistics, guaranteed GI origin, carbide-free ripening, and doorstep delivery. You pay less per fruit at the mandi only if you can physically inspect and transport the box yourself — and if you know what genuine hapus looks and smells like at point of sale.
How We Ripen and Grade Hapus
Fruit is picked at the mature-green stage when the natural yellow blush begins at the cheek. It travels to our packing shed the same day. There, it goes into dry hay beds — loose paddy straw layered between fruit rows inside the carton. No ethylene gas chambers, no calcium carbide sachets.
Hay-bed ripening takes 3–5 days at ambient temperature. Brix builds naturally. Skin shifts from green-shoulder to full saffron without chemical colouring. You can taste the difference: carbide-ripened fruit goes soft at the edges while the core stays hard; natural hay-bed fruit softens uniformly from skin to seed.
What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?
Devgad Alphonso typically measures 18 to 24°Bx at peak ripeness. Ratnagiri fruit from lower-altitude orchards near the coast averages 18 to 24°Bx. Both are well above the 18 to 24°Bx typical of non-GI "Alphonso" varieties sold in north Indian markets. We measure random samples each harvest week — the readings guide which village's fruit goes into premium versus standard grade.
Season Window and Off-Season Reality
Alphonso trees flower in December–January across Konkan. First fruit reaches maturity around 10–15 March in early years, mid-March in typical years. The season closes by mid-June in Devgad's cooler micro-zones.
We do not sell afus aam after June. If you visit our site in August and see no mango listings, that is correct. We will not substitute a different variety and label it Hapus. During the off-season, we stock Aamras (mango pulp), cashews from Konkan, and select dry fruits — but the fresh fruit is simply gone until next March.
This matters for afus aam price planning: if you want to gift a premium box in May, order by 20 May because late-season availability is limited and we do not extend the catalogue artificially.
Nutrition in GI-Tagged Hapus
A 100 g serving of ripe Alphonso pulp contains approximately 74 kcal, 17 g carbohydrate (mostly fructose and sucrose), 1.5 g fibre, 36 mg vitamin C, and 1,082 IU beta-carotene. The saffron pigmentation is a direct indicator of beta-carotene concentration — deeper gold means more carotene. Devgad fruit's deeper colour is not cosmetic; it correlates with higher antioxidant density.
The fiberless pulp structure of Hapus also makes it the easiest mango to process into Aamras. One dozen medium-grade Ratnagiri Alphonsos yields approximately 600–700 ml of pulp with no straining needed.
