The key benefits of mangoes for eyes come from vitamin A, lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene and vitamin C — nutrients that reduce night blindness, dry eyes and macular degeneration risk. GI-certified Alphonso mangoes (GI No. 139) are available February to June (the 2027 season starts on 1 February 2027). Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.

Mangoes are seasonal — available February to June. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then. Between seasons, two products from our catalogue carry nutrients that support eye health year-round.
Benefits of Mangoes for Eyes
Mangoes are one of the few whole fruits that deliver four distinct eye-protective nutrients simultaneously: vitamin A (as beta-carotene), vitamin C, lutein and zeaxanthin. Each works on a different part of the eye and on a different failure mode.
Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g — about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for women (65 mg/day). That same 100 g portion also provides meaningful beta-carotene, which the liver converts to retinol (vitamin A) on demand.
The Brix of a Devgad Alphonso at full ripeness runs 18–24°. That high sugar concentration reflects dense, fully expressed pulp — which is also where the carotenoid pigments are most concentrated. The deep saffron colour is not cosmetic. It is beta-carotene and xanthophylls visible to the naked eye.
Which Nutrients in Mangoes Protect Vision
Vitamin A and Beta-Carotene
The retina uses retinal (an aldehyde form of vitamin A) to construct rhodopsin — the photopigment in rod cells that enables vision in dim light. Without enough dietary vitamin A, rhodopsin synthesis slows and night vision deteriorates first, followed eventually by corneal damage. Beta-carotene in mango converts to retinol in the gut wall, with conversion regulated by the body's own need — so there is no toxicity risk from eating fruit, unlike pre-formed retinol from liver or supplements.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin
These two carotenoids concentrate in the macula — the small, central region of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. They act as a natural optical filter, absorbing blue-wavelength light before it can generate reactive oxygen species in photoreceptor cells. Eyes exposed to strong sunlight or long screen hours deplete macular pigment faster. Regular dietary lutein and zeaxanthin help replenish it. Mangoes contain both, though not at the concentration found in dark leafy greens; eating mangoes contributes to the daily total rather than replacing other sources.
Vitamin C
The aqueous humour inside the eye carries vitamin C at concentrations about 20 times higher than in plasma. This localised pool scavenges free radicals generated by UV exposure. When dietary vitamin C is low, this pool depletes and lens proteins become more vulnerable to oxidation — a step toward cataract formation. At 30–36 mg per 100 g, Alphonso provides a useful contribution toward the 80 mg/day ICMR-NIN 2020 target for men.
Vitamin E and Anti-Inflammatory Compounds
Mangoes contain vitamin E, which works alongside vitamin C to interrupt lipid peroxidation in cell membranes, including those in photoreceptors. Mangiferin — a xanthonoid abundant in mango — showed anti-inflammatory activity in a 2011 cell study by Govindappa et al. Inflammation in the eye's vascular and retinal tissues is a mechanism shared by several degenerative conditions. This does not mean eating mangoes prevents disease; it means the compounds are active in the right direction.
Mangoes and Night Blindness
Night blindness caused by vitamin A deficiency is still prevalent in populations with low dietary diversity. Mangoes are not a clinical treatment. But eaten regularly during the February-to-June season — when GI-certified Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad is available — they provide consistent dietary beta-carotene that supports normal rhodopsin regeneration. One 150 g serving of ripe Alphonso (roughly one medium-grade fruit) delivers more beta-carotene than most daily servings of common vegetables.
Mangoes and Dry Eyes
Dry eye is partly a mucosal health problem. Goblet cells on the ocular surface produce the mucin layer of the tear film, and goblet cell density depends on local vitamin A status. Retinol deficiency — even subclinical deficiency — reduces mucin secretion and accelerates tear film break-up. Dietary beta-carotene from mangoes supports retinol availability in mucosal tissues, including the conjunctiva. This is a slower, indirect mechanism; you will not feel it after one serving. Regular intake during the season, though, keeps the substrate available.
Mangoes and Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration involves progressive oxidative damage to the photoreceptors and retinal pigment epithelium in the macula. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only carotenoids that accumulate in the macula, and higher macular pigment optical density correlates with lower AMD risk in population studies. Vitamin C and E, by reducing oxidative burden elsewhere in the retina, take pressure off the macula's own antioxidant systems. Mangoes contribute to all three of these pathways — vitamin C, vitamin E and macular carotenoids — within a single food.

Delivery Across India
Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness, firm enough for transit and ripe within about three days of delivery. The box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard courier-grade carton with 12-slot partitions that absorb transit pressure, six air holes for airflow, and a foam-net sleeve on every individual mango. The supply chain runs like this: roughly 2 hours from orchard to the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, 10–12 hours by air-conditioned vehicle to Mumbai, 24–48 hours of hay-bed ripening, then dispatch by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code.
Honest limitation: Fresh Alphonso is not available July to January. No exceptions — there is no cold-store blending or off-season fruit on this site. If you are reading this outside the February-to-June window, the dried apricots and cashews above are the right choice.

Season, Ripening and What Happens Off-Season
The Alphonso season runs February to June, with March to May being the peak. Fruit from Pawas, Golap and Nachane in Ratnagiri, and from Devgad, Jamsande and Vijaydurg in Devgad taluka, reaches our Malvan packing centre or Devgad packing point before moving to Mumbai.
Prashant Powle, who founded AlphonsoMango.in in 2017, selects orchards across 48 coastal villages of Ratnagiri and Devgad on three criteria: Brix consistency across the season, tree age (our partner orchards are typically 12–25 years old) and alternate-bearing management. Orchards that push yield by neglecting rest years produce fruit with lower carotenoid density — less colour, less flavour, and less nutritional payload per gram. We do not source from those.
Every batch is independently tested at Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL-accredited, certificate TC-8284; report 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025). All 28 residues tested were within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification at 0.01 mg/kg. We say "all residues within Codex limits" — not "pesticide-free" — because one residue (thiamethoxam at 0.013 mg/kg against a limit of 0.2 mg/kg) was detected within limits. That is what honest testing looks like.
Can I get the eye-health benefits of mangoes year-round?
Not from fresh Alphonso — the season closes in June. Dried apricots, which we stock year-round, are a practical beta-carotene source between seasons. Our W240 Konkan cashews add zinc, which the retina uses to metabolise vitamin A. Neither replaces the full carotenoid profile of ripe Alphonso pulp, but both contribute to the same nutritional goals.
What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?
At full ripeness, Devgad Alphonso reads 18–24° Brix — typically at the upper end of that range. That compares with Ratnagiri fruit, which spans the same range with slightly more variation by village and harvest week.
How much vitamin C does Alphonso mango provide per 100 g?
Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. That meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day).

People Also Ask
Do mangoes improve eyesight?
Mangoes supply four nutrients that directly support eye function: vitamin A (as beta-carotene), vitamin C, lutein and zeaxanthin. Beta-carotene converts to retinol in the gut and feeds rhodopsin production in the retina. Lutein and zeaxanthin filter blue light at the macula. Vitamin C protects the lens from oxidation. Regular intake supports vision; it does not correct refractive errors.
Ripe GI-certified Alphonso from Ratnagiri or Devgad — available February to June — delivers all four in one fruit, with 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g and visibly dense carotenoid pigment in the pulp.
What happens to your body if you eat mango every day?
Daily mango eating raises your vitamin C, beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin intake — nutrients that support eye health, skin repair and immune function. Beta-carotene converts to vitamin A on demand, so there is no toxicity risk from fruit. One 100 g serving of ripe Alphonso provides about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 vitamin C target for adult men.
During the February-to-June Alphonso season, GI-certified fruit from Ratnagiri and Devgad is dispatched within 48–72 hours of harvest — so the nutrients you read about above are still intact when the mango reaches your table.
Which organ is mango good for?
The eye benefits most directly: mango provides beta-carotene for the retina's rod cells, lutein and zeaxanthin for the macula, and vitamin C for the lens. The liver also gains — it converts beta-carotene to retinol on demand, regulating output to avoid toxicity. Skin and mucosal tissues, including the conjunctiva, depend on the same retinol supply chain.
Alphonso mango's deep saffron pulp colour is visible proof of carotenoid density — the pigment you see is the same beta-carotene the retina uses.
