Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which Should You Order?

Both carry GI No. 139. The difference is geography and, by extension, flavour profile. Our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows Mumbai buyers lean Devgad; north India leans Ratnagiri. Neither choice is wrong.

Delivery to Mumbai

Mumbai orders follow the same schedule as the rest of India. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes. The fruit leaves either the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, travels by air-conditioned vehicle to our Mumbai packhouse, spends 24–48 hours on a natural hay bed, then goes out via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Total time from harvest to dispatch is 48–72 hours.

Every fruit sits in a foam-net sleeve inside a 12-slot partition inside a 5-ply corrugated box with six air holes. The partition carries transit pressure — the fruit does not. That is why Alphonso skin arrives unmarked: Alphonso lenticels blacken when rubbed, and this setup prevents that.

Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness. If a box arrives and the fruit feels firm, leave it on your kitchen counter for two to three days. If any fruit is damaged in transit, photograph or video the fruit and packaging, send it on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery, and we dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account. No physical return is needed.

What if I am not in Mumbai for delivery?

Outside Mumbai, the delivery times above apply. Fresh Alphonso is not sold July to January — that is our one firm limit.

Where the Fruit Comes From

We source from 48 villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad. In Devgad taluka alone: Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Hindale, Naringre, Kanyabag, Padel, Girye, Rameshwar and more. In Ratnagiri taluka: Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad. Prashant Powle selects partner orchards on three criteria — Brix consistency across the season, tree age (12–25 years, which produces denser flavour than young trees), and alternate-bearing management so the orchard is not exhausted.

Harvesting uses a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls to the ground. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera is used. This detail matters for Mumbai buyers: stem punctures from careless harvesting cause latex to drip onto neighbouring fruit, creating black scars by the time the box reaches you.

Hot-water treatment follows harvest to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life, then post-harvest cooling before the air-conditioned vehicle run to Mumbai. Every fruit is weighed, graded and scanned — AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks for internal spongy tissue and external deformities.

How the Fruit Ripens

Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is monitored natural ripening on hay — not gas-triggered.

We test weekly through the season. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. in Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284) tested a sample on 5 April 2025 — all 28 pesticide residues fell within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits" — not "pesticide-free", because one residue was detected within limits.

Season and Availability

The Alphonso season runs February to June, peaking March to May. Kesar follows a similar window from Gujarat. After June, no fresh Alphonso or Kesar is available from us — the orchards rest, and we do not sell cold-stored blended fruit as fresh. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

Why does Alphonso availability vary so much year to year?

Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on exactly this question — weather stress and irregular flowering in 2026 created an existential squeeze on yields across Ratnagiri. Alternate-bearing trees in a bad-weather year produce far less, and the Konkan coast gives no second chance within that season.

How to Order

  1. Step 1 — Select your variety and grade. Devgad Alphonso runs ₹1,849 to ₹5,499 depending on grade and box size; Kesar runs ₹999 to ₹1,699. Box options are half dozen, one dozen and two dozen.
  2. Step 2 — Add to cart and check out. Enter your Mumbai pin code; the site confirms serviceability and shows the available courier for your area.
  3. Step 3 — We dispatch. BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Delivery times are given in the Delivery section above.

Nutrition at a Glance

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, a polyphenol found in mango, showed anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies (Govindappa et al., 2011) — that is a cell study, not a clinical trial, so treat it as promising rather than conclusive.

Alphonso pulp is suitable as a first fruit for babies from about 6 months — keep it as a serving suggestion; ask your paediatrician for dietary guidance.
