Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which to Choose?
Both carry GI No. 139. The differences are real but subtle, and our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers tells a clear story: north Indian buyers lean Ratnagiri; Mumbai and coastal buyers lean Devgad. Here is how the two compare on the numbers that matter.

Delivery Across India
Harvest to dispatch runs in 48–72 hours. From the orchard in a village like Girye or Nachane, the fruit travels about 2 hours by road to our Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse. Air-conditioned vehicles bring it to our Mumbai packhouse in 10–12 hours. There it rests on a natural hay bed for 24–48 hours — more on that below — then it is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness, firm enough to survive transit and ripe enough to eat within three days of delivery.
Courier partners are BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees, assigned by pin code. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.
Packaging is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box (130 gsm paper, alternate flute orientation, reinforced corners), with six air holes for airflow and a 12-slot partition that carries transit pressure so the fruit does not. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve — flat width 50–55 mm — that prevents side bruising, lenticel friction scars, stem punctures from neighbouring fruit and condensation that can trigger anthracnose. The box comes in 3.5 kg and 4 kg sizes.
Honest limitation: we do not dispatch fresh Alphonso July through January. The orchards in Pawas, Golap and Devgad produce one crop per year. If you look outside the season window, note that the 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.
Where the Fruit Comes From
We source from 48 coastal villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad. The Ratnagiri side covers Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad, Gaonkhadi, Ambeshet, Mirya, Kalbadevi, Majgaon, Kasheli, Adi and villages across Rajapur, Lanja and Mandangad talukas. The Sindhudurg side includes Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Girye, Kunkeshwar, Mithbav and others, plus Achara, Tondavali and Kochare in Malvan and Vengurla.
Prashant Powle — who founded AlphonsoMango.in in 2017 and was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on the pressures facing GI-certified Alphonso growers — selects orchards on three criteria: Brix consistency across the season, tree age (typically 12–25 years old, sea-facing), and how the farmer manages alternate-bearing years. Over 100 partner farmer families supply us under strict cultivation SOPs covering natural sprays and fertilisers from flowering through to harvest.
Harvesting is done by hand using a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For taller trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole fitted with a camera is used. Every mango is weighed, graded and scanned by AI/ML-assisted machine vision for internal issues such as spongy tissue and external deformities before packing.
How We Ripen the Fruit
Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is natural ripening on hay, monitored — not gas-triggered.
This matters because carbide-ripened fruit ripens from the outside in. The skin yellows before the pulp is ready, which means the sugar does not fully develop and the Brix reading stays low. Fruit ripened naturally on hay reaches 18–24° Brix at the pulp because the process follows the fruit's own ethylene curve. You taste the difference immediately — the pulp is uniform, not stringy near the seed and sweet only near the skin.
Post-harvest, the fruit goes through a controlled hot-water treatment to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life, followed by post-harvest cooling before transport. The full chain from tree to your door is air-conditioned from Ratnagiri or Devgad to Mumbai.
Authenticity and Testing
GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019) covers our Alphonso. Powle Home Foods also holds FSSAI licence 10020022011783 and APEDA registration 225579. We export to the US, UK, UAE, Singapore and Japan — markets that demand documentation, not just labels.
Pesticide residues are tested weekly through the season by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284). The April 2025 report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) tested 28 residues: 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification at 0.01 mg/kg. One residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex maximum of 0.2 mg/kg — well within the permitted limit. We describe this accurately as independently tested, all residues within Codex limits. We do not say "pesticide-free."
Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024. That is a district-product recognition, not an award specific to AlphonsoMango.in, but it reflects the standing of the fruit we source.
Season, Storage and What to Expect on Arrival
When does the Alphonso mango season run?
February through June, with the peak flush in March through May. This matches the natural flowering and maturation cycle of orchards in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg. July through January: no fresh Alphonso is dispatched from us or anywhere in Konkan, because there is simply no fruit on the trees.
What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?
Both Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso reach 18–24° Brix at full ripeness. Devgad fruit typically sits at the upper end of that range, which is why experienced buyers describe it as richer and more intensely sweet. We measure this at the packhouse before dispatch — it is not a marketing claim.
How to store Alphonso mangoes after delivery
Fruit arrives at 70–80% ripeness. Keep it at room temperature for up to three days until it gives slightly to gentle thumb pressure and the skin turns fully golden-yellow. Do not refrigerate unripe mangoes — cold halts the ripening process and flattens the aroma. Once ripe, you can refrigerate for one to two days, but the best window is to eat them within 24 hours of full ripeness.
What about Kesar mangoes?
We also stock Gir Kesar mangoes (GI Tag No. 185, Junagadh and Gir region). Kesar runs a similar season and is available as an alternative when Alphonso supplies are tight due to adverse weather — a reality Prashant Powle discussed publicly during the 2026 season, when cyclone-related disruption cut Ratnagiri yields sharply.

People Also Ask
What is the best month to buy mangoes?
April is the best month to buy Alphonso mangoes. The season runs February through June, with peak quality from March to May. By April, orchards in Ratnagiri villages like Nachane and Golap and Devgad villages like Girye are yielding fruit at full Brix — 18 to 24° — and supply is most consistent.
The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.
What organ does mango help?
Ripe Alphonso pulp supports the digestive system most directly — the fibre aids gut motility and the natural enzymes help break down food. A 100 g serving also provides roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C, meeting about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 daily requirement for adult men, which benefits immune function and skin.
Research by Govindappa et al. (2011) found mangiferin, a compound present in mango, shows anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies — though that work is lab-based, not a clinical trial.
How long will fresh cut mango last in the fridge?
Fresh cut Alphonso mango keeps for two to three days in a sealed container in the refrigerator. The pulp oxidises quickly once exposed to air, so press cling film directly onto the cut surface before lidding the container. Fruit dispatched from our packhouse arrives at 70–80% ripeness and is best cut within three days of delivery.
For longer storage, freeze the cut pulp flat in a zip-lock bag — it holds for up to three months and works well in smoothies or Aamras.
