What Is Aapus Mango?

Aapus is the Marathi name for Alphonso mango. The Hindi-speaking belt calls it Hapus. Internationally it is listed as Alphonso. All three names refer to the same cultivar: Mangifera indica variety Alphonso, grown exclusively in the laterite-clay coastal belt of Konkan, Maharashtra.

The name traces to Afonso de Albuquerque, the Portuguese viceroy who introduced grafting techniques to Goa in the 16th century. Over centuries, Konkan farmers selected and refined the variety for sweetness, aroma, and zero fibre — qualities no other Indian mango fully replicates.

What Is Afos Mango?

Afos mango is a common phonetic misspelling of Alphonso or Aapus, used in online searches, particularly by buyers in the Gulf and UK. Afos mango, aapus mango, and Alphonso mango all refer to the identical GI-certified fruit grown in Ratnagiri and Devgad.

How Is Aapus Different from Other Indian Mangoes?

Most Indian mango varieties — Langra, Dasheri, Totapuri — have fibrous flesh and a flatter sweetness profile. Aapus has no fibre at all. The pulp is dense, almost custard-like. The aroma carries a mild saffron note. Brix readings of 18 to 24° place it among the sweetest mangoes measured anywhere in the world.

Origin and GI Certification

GI-certified Alphonso Aapus mango from Ratnagiri and Devgad, Konkan, Maharashtra

Alphonso mango holds Geographical Indication No. 139 under the GI Act of India. The GI registry certificate number is 4163, issued 16 October 2019. Only mangoes grown within the designated Konkan belt — Ratnagiri, Devgad, Rajapur, Vengurla, and surrounding talukas — can legally carry this GI tag.

AlphonsoMango.in sources from 48 villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad districts. Prashant Powle personally oversees grower selection each season, visiting orchards in villages such as Velas and Kelshi before fruit reaches the grading shed.

What Does the GI Tag on Aapus Mean for Buyers?

A GI tag is a legal guarantee of geographic authenticity. It means the fruit was grown in the certified zone, not a lookalike variety grown elsewhere. Without the GI mark, a mango labelled "Alphonso" or "Hapus" at a local market could be any variety from any state. AlphonsoMango.in holds GI Authorised User status AU/5974/GI/139/260, which allows it to certify fruit at the point of sale.

Natural Ripening — No Carbide

Every box from AlphonsoMango.in is ripened using traditional hay-bed method. Mangoes are placed on a bed of dry paddy straw, covered, and left to ripen through their own ethylene gas for 24–48 hours. No calcium carbide. No ethephon spray. No artificial heat chamber.

Carbide-ripened fruit looks yellow outside but stays starchy inside. It lacks the characteristic Alphonso aroma. Natural ripening produces a uniform golden colour from skin to pit and the full saffron-sweet scent that defines aapus.

How to Tell If Your Aapus Is Carbide-Free

Press the mango gently at both ends. Carbide-ripened fruit is soft at one spot but hard elsewhere. A naturally ripened Alphonso gives evenly across the whole fruit. The smell test also works: genuine aapus has a deep, warm fragrance even before peeling. Chemically ripened fruit smells flat or faintly acidic.

Nutritional Profile

A 100 g serving of Alphonso pulp delivers approximately 60 kcal, 15 g carbohydrates, 1 g dietary fibre, 36 mg vitamin C (40% of daily requirement), and 1,082 IU vitamin A. Potassium content sits around 168 mg per 100 g — useful for blood pressure regulation and muscle function.

The deep orange pigment comes from beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A that supports skin and eye health. Alphonso pulp also contains mangiferin, a xanthone with documented antioxidant properties.

What Is the Brix Level of Devgad Alphonso Aapus?

Devgad Alphonso measures 18 to 24° Brix at full ripeness. Ratnagiri Alphonso typically reads 18 to 24° Brix. Both are far sweeter than commercial mango varieties like Totapuri (12–14° Brix) or Kesar (16–18° Brix). Brix measures dissolved sugar in juice — the higher the number, the sweeter the fruit.

Season and Availability

Aapus mango has a strict natural season. The first fruits appear in Ratnagiri orchards around the last week of February. Peak harvest runs April through May. Devgad fruit comes slightly later, with the best boxes available mid-April through early June. By late June, the season ends. July through January, the fruit does not exist on trees — no ethical supplier can ship it.

Early-season fruit (February–March) is smaller and slightly less sweet. Mid-season fruit (April–May) is peak quality: maximum Brix, full aroma, best colour. Late-season fruit (June) is larger but can be slightly fibrous near the seed. AlphonsoMango.in ships mid-season boxes by default.

Can I Pre-Order Aapus Before the Season?

Yes. Pre-orders open in January each year. Payment is collected at checkout. Boxes ship as soon as the first quality-certified harvest clears grading, typically the first week of March for Ratnagiri and the third week of March for Devgad.

Storage and Handling

On arrival, your mangoes will be firm and mostly green-yellow. Keep them at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. They ripen in 1–2 days. Do not refrigerate unripe mangoes — cold stops the ripening process and harms texture.

Once ripe (uniform golden skin, slight give when pressed), refrigerate and consume within 2 days. Ripe Alphonso does not keep long — that is the honest reality of a natural, preservative-free fruit.

How to Make Aamras from Aapus

Peel ripe aapus by hand. Squeeze pulp directly into a bowl. Add a pinch of cardamom powder and a teaspoon of sugar if needed (ripe Alphonso rarely needs it). Blend briefly or mash by hand for a chunky texture. Serve chilled with puri. The saffron-gold colour of Alphonso aamras is distinct — no artificial colour needed.
