Devgad vs Ratnagiri: Price and Grade Comparison
Both varieties carry GI No. 139 (GI Registry of India). Price tracks grade (fruit weight) and season timing. Early-season fruit (February–March) and late-season fruit (June) typically cost more; mid-season (April–May) boxes come at the steadiest rates.

| Ripening method | Natural hay-bed (Aadi), no carbide | Natural hay-bed (Aadi), no carbide |
Devgad fruit harvested from sea-facing orchards in villages like Jamsande, Vijaydurg and Kunkeshwar tends to hit the upper Brix range because the coastal breeze slows the fruit down, concentrating sugars. That is why Mumbai buyers — who can often smell the difference — lean Devgad.
Delivery Across India
Every box travels from the Devgad or Ratnagiri packhouse to our Mumbai facility by air-conditioned vehicle (10–12 hours). After 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening at the Mumbai packhouse, the box is dispatched by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Transit is 20–24 hours to metro cities and 1–3 days elsewhere across 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes.
Fruit leaves the tree at 70–80% ripeness. It ripens fully within about three days of reaching you — no ethylene chamber, no gas trigger.
Each box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard (CFB) box, 130 gsm, courier-grade, with a 12-slot partition that bears transit pressure instead of the fruit. Every mango sits in a foam-net sleeve and rests on a hay bed. Six air holes on the top and bottom keep airflow going so condensation evaporates before it can cause anthracnose.
We do not ship fresh Alphonso July to January. If someone is selling "Devgad Hapus" in August, it is not fresh-season fruit.
How to Order
- Select your grade. Choose Small (150–180 g, from ₹1849 per dozen), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g) on the Devgad Alphonso product page — or the Ratnagiri product page for comparison.
- Add to cart and choose your box size. Options are half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen; select the quantity that suits you and proceed to checkout.
- We dispatch to your door. Once the season opens (1 February 2027 for the next season), your box ships via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code, reaching most Indian cities in 1–3 days.
Pre-orders can be cancelled before dispatch. If fruit is damaged in transit or fails a quality check, report within 24 hours of delivery with photos or a video on WhatsApp. We send a fresh replacement or credit your account — no physical return needed.
Where Devgad Alphonso Comes From
Devgad taluka sits in Sindhudurg district on the Konkan coast. The soil here is laterite, the orchards face the Arabian Sea, and many trees are 12–25 years old. We source from 24 villages in Devgad taluka alone: Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Hindale, Naringre, Kanyabag, Padel, Girye, Rameshwar, Waghotan, Kunkeshwar, Mithbav, Katwan, Aare, Shirgaon, Tambaldeg, Ilve, Munge, Khavane, Tiravade, Koregaon, Baparde and Mandivali.
Prashant Powle started visiting these orchards in 2017 before AlphonsoMango.in went commercial. The selection criterion was simple: consistent Brix across multiple harvests from the same tree, managed alternate-bearing, and a farmer who had not switched to synthetic sprays. Today we work with 100+ partner farmer families across 55 named villages in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.
Harvest happens by hand using a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For tall trees, an indigenously developed extending pole with a camera locates the fruit before the cutter reaches it. From tree to the Devgad packing point is about two hours.
GI Tag — What It Means for Price
Both Devgad and Ratnagiri Alphonso carry GI No. 139 from the GI Registry of India. A GI tag is a geographical indicator — it means the fruit can legally be called Alphonso only if it comes from the notified zone. Powle Home Foods holds Authorised User number AU/5974/GI/139/260, GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019.
That certificate is one reason authentic GI-tagged Hapus costs more than generic "Alphonso" sold without traceability. You are paying for verified origin, not just a name.
How to Identify Authentic Devgad Hapus
Genuine Devgad Alphonso is golden-yellow at full ripeness with a thin green blush near the stem that fades as the fruit ripens. The flesh is fibre-free, deep saffron, and the Brix sits between 18 and 24° — Devgad fruit routinely sits at the upper end of that band. A carbide-ripened mango looks uniformly yellow outside but often has white or pale flesh inside and a chemical off-note on the palate.
Our fruit is independently tested each season by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284). The April 2025 report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) found all 28 tested residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits" — not "pesticide-free", because one residue (thiamethoxam, 0.013 mg/kg against a limit of 0.2 mg/kg) was detected within limits.
Every mango is weighed, graded and scanned by AI/ML-assisted machine vision that checks for internal issues (spongy tissue) and external deformities before packing. If a fruit fails, it does not go in the box.
Ripening and Storage
Fruit arrives at the Mumbai packhouse at 70–80% ripeness. It rests on hay for 24–48 hours in temperature-controlled rooms — no ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. This is the traditional Aadi method. The hay regulates moisture and the temperature-controlled room prevents fermentation.
Once delivered, keep the box at room temperature (22–26°C) away from direct sunlight. The fruit completes ripening within about three days. Once fully ripe, refrigerate and consume within two days. Do not refrigerate unripe Alphonso — cold interrupts the ripening process and dulls the flavour.
What to do if fruit arrives firm
This is intentional. We dispatch at 70–80% ripeness so the fruit survives 1–3 days of courier transit without bruising. Leave the box closed, in a cool shaded spot indoors. Open it on day two or three. You will find the fruit has ripened evenly across the dozen.
Price Questions Answered
What is the price of 1 dozen authentic Alphonso mangoes in India?
A 1 dozen box of GI-tagged Alphonso mangoes from AlphonsoMango.in starts at ₹1849 for the Small grade (150–180 g per fruit). Jumbo grade (275–300 g) reaches ₹5499 for Devgad. Price varies by fruit weight, variety and season timing within February–June.
How much does Alphonso mango cost per kg?
At ₹1849 per dozen for Small-grade fruit (150–180 g each), a dozen weighs roughly 1.8–2.2 kg, putting the per-kg rate at approximately ₹840–1,030. Jumbo-grade fruit at ₹5499 per dozen (275–300 g each, roughly 3.3–3.6 kg) works out to about ₹1,530–1,670 per kg. These are indicative figures — check the live product page for current rates.
Why are Alphonso mangoes so expensive?
Three things drive the price: a short season (February–June, peak April–May), a geographically restricted growing zone (Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts only for GI No. 139), and a labour-intensive post-harvest chain — hand harvest, grading, AI/ML scanning, foam-net sleeving, hay-bed ripening and air-conditioned transport. No industrial shortcuts. The GI certification, FSSAI licence and APEDA registration add compliance costs that protect you, not just us.
Is Devgad or Ratnagiri Alphonso more expensive?
Both start at ₹1849 per dozen (Small grade) on our site. Devgad Jumbo reaches ₹5499 against Ratnagiri Jumbo at ₹5399 — a marginal difference. Devgad fruit typically sits at the higher end of the 18–24° Brix range; some buyers pay a premium for that, but the price gap at comparable grades is small.
What is a fair price for GI-tagged Alphonso mangoes online?
For a verified GI-tagged, carbide-free, graded Alphonso delivered to your door in 1–3 days, ₹1849–₹5499 per dozen (depending on grade) is the market reality in 2025. Prices lower than this for "GI Alphonso" online should prompt questions about traceability, grading and ripening method.
