One kilogram of Alphonso mangoes is usually 4 to 6 fruit, because a single Alphonso weighs roughly 150 to 275 grams. Smaller fruit gives 6 or 7 pieces in every 1 kg, and the largest grades give about 3 to 4.
How many Alphonso mangoes in 1 kg depends on the size of the fruit, so the honest answer is a range. This page gives the count for each size, shows how to work it out for 3, 5 or 10 kg, and explains why Alphonso is sold by the dozen and not by the kilo.
How many Alphonso mangoes in 1 kg, by size
The sum is simple: divide 1,000 grams by the weight of one fruit. A dozen of our Alphonso weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade, which puts one fruit at roughly 150 to 275 g. The table uses that range. General references put an Alphonso at about 150 to 300 g, a little wider than our dozen grades.
| Weight of one fruit | Mangoes in 1 kg (roughly) |
|---|---|
| 150 g | 6 to 7 |
| 175 g | 5 to 6 |
| 200 g | 5 |
| 250 g | 4 |
| 275 g | 3 to 4 |
| 300 g | 3 to 4 |
So the usual answer for 1 kg of Alphonso is 4 to 6 mangoes. A kilo of small fruit is more pieces and a kilo of large fruit is fewer, but the weight is the same.
How many mangoes in 3 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg
The same sum scales up. Using the same 150 to 275 g range for Alphonso:
- 3 kg: roughly 11 to 20 mangoes
- 5 kg: roughly 18 to 33 mangoes
- 10 kg: roughly 36 to 66 mangoes
These are estimates, and a mixed batch will land somewhere inside the range. If you need an exact count for an event or a gift, buy by the dozen of a stated grade, so that both the count and the weight are known.
A worked example
Say you buy a dozen that weighs 2.4 kg. Each fruit then weighs about 200 g (2,400 divided by 12). One kilo holds 1,000 divided by 200, which is 5 fruit. Now say another seller's dozen weighs 3 kg. Each fruit is 250 g and a kilo holds 4. Bigger fruit usually sits in a higher grade, so a kilo holds fewer pieces.
This is why two boxes both labelled "1 kg" can hold a different number of mangoes. Always ask for the fruit count, not only the weight. A count of 12 with a stated dozen weight tells you the average size of each fruit, and that is the number you need to plan servings.
Which size suits you
- Eating at home. Medium fruit, around 5 to a kilo, is a common size for home eating.
- Gifting. Larger fruit, 3 to 4 to a kilo, looks better in a box.
- Juice, shakes or desserts. Small fruit is fine, and pulp is an option once the season ends.
Why Alphonso is sold by the dozen
In India, Alphonso is traditionally counted, not weighed. A dozen is 12 fruit, and each grade has its own typical dozen weight.
If a seller quotes by the kilo, ask for the fruit count and the size. Our dozens start from Rs 1,849 for Ratnagiri Alphonso or Devgad Alphonso, and the largest Ratnagiri option goes up to Rs 5,399. The order-online page lists every grade with its price. Check the product page for the current price.
1 kg, 1 dozen and 1 box: how they relate
Because the grade changes the fruit weight, the three units never line up exactly. A dozen of our Alphonso is 12 fruit and weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg. So a dozen is a little under 2 kg at the small end and a little over 3 kg at the large end. If you want about 3 kg of fruit, one dozen of a large grade is close, and one dozen of a small grade falls short.
Count how many pieces each person will eat, then pick the grade whose dozen weight gets you there.
Other mangoes in 1 kg
Other varieties follow the same rule: divide 1,000 g by the weight of one fruit. Large mangoes such as Kent often weigh 400 to 700 g, so a kilo holds about 1.5 to 2.5 fruit. For Kesar, look at the weight on the Kesar mango listing and do the same sum. Do not copy the Alphonso count for another variety, since a Kesar or a Kent can be much smaller or larger than an Alphonso.
What to ask a seller when counting by kilo
- Is the weight net fruit, or does it include the box and packing?
- How many fruit does that weight usually hold?
- Which grade is it, and is it the same grade for the whole box?
- Is the fruit all one variety?
- What is the delivered total?
A clear answer to these five questions tells you far more than a headline price per kilo.
Where our Alphonso comes from
We source across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt on the Konkan coast. Our GI Authorised User certificate is AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139), and the details are on our Brand Facts page. Harvest is done at Brahma Muhurta, before dawn.
Natural ripening
We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. If your fruit is still firm, keep it at room temperature and eat the ripest pieces first.
Storage after delivery
- If your fruit is still firm, keep it at room temperature, away from direct sun.
- Do not refrigerate until the fruit is ripe and fragrant.
- Once ripe, you can chill it for a short while to hold it.
- Take it out some time before eating, since cold dulls the flavour.
Delivery is by Blue Dart. About 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery, so check your PIN code at checkout. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027, and outside the season we do not sell fresh Alphonso. Alphonso pulp tins are available all year.
