How many mangoes to gift depends on who receives the box. Six suits one or two people, twelve suits a family of three to five, and twenty-four suits a large household or a shared gift. A dozen Alphonso weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg.
Most mango gift mistakes are about quantity, not quality. A box that is too small feels thin for a family, and a box that is too large ripens faster than people can eat it. This article is only about the number: how many mangoes to gift, and how to choose between six, twelve and twenty-four. It is a narrower question than our budget per person guide, which is about spending, and our mango gifts by occasion article, which is about the festival or event.
How many mangoes to gift: the short answer
Use the household as the unit, not the occasion. Count how many people will eat from the box, then add a little for visitors.
- 6 mangoes for one or two people, or a small add-on gift.
- 12 mangoes (one dozen) for a family of three to five. This is the safe default for most gifts.
- 24 mangoes (two dozen) for a large or joint family, a shared gift for two households, or a gift that the recipient will pass on.
These are planning guides, not rules. Appetite, the grade of the fruit and how many days the box will last all change the answer. Fresh mangoes also ripen together, so a box should match what a home can finish in a few days.
6, 12 and 24 mangoes compared
The table shows what we can actually offer at each size. Alphonso is sold by the dozen and in larger boxes; the half-dozen size exists only for Kesar. Prices are "from" prices and can change, so check the product page for today's price.
| Quantity | Best for | What we sell | From price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 mangoes | One or two people, a small add-on, a neighbour or a colleague | Half-dozen Kesar box. Alphonso is not sold in sixes. | Rs 999 for Kesar |
| 12 mangoes | A family of three to five, parents, in-laws, a client at home | One dozen of Ratnagiri Alphonso or Devgad Alphonso; one dozen Kesar or Pairi | Alphonso from Rs 1,849; Kesar Rs 1,699; Pairi Rs 2,799 |
| 24 mangoes | A large or joint family, two households sharing, a gift for a small gathering | Two-dozen options on the Ratnagiri and Devgad pages | Up to Rs 5,399 for the largest Ratnagiri option; check the product page |
| More than 24 | Events, weddings, return gifts | Larger boxes on the order-online page | Up to Rs 10,499 for the largest listing on the order-online page |
A dozen of our Alphonso weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. Choose the grade on the product page, then the number of dozens.
How much mango per person
There is no single correct figure. What we can say from how fruit behaves is this:
- A ripe mango is usually eaten within a few days, so think about how many people are at home during that time.
- One or two mangoes per person at a sitting is a common serving for a sweet, heavy variety such as Alphonso. A smaller grade goes further.
- Mango is often shared with guests or kept for aamras, so a family of four rarely finishes a dozen in a day.
If you are unsure, ask the family how many people are at home. A short message is cheaper than a box that spoils.
When six mangoes are enough
Six is a gift of attention, not abundance. It suits a one- or two-person home or a small thank-you. In our range, the half-dozen size is the Kesar box, from Rs 999. Kesar is a different variety from Alphonso, with its own taste, and we do not describe it as GI-tagged.
If your recipient wants Alphonso specifically, the smallest standard option is one dozen. For a very small household, you can still choose the smallest grade in a dozen and tell the recipient to share some with a neighbour.
Why twelve is the usual choice
A dozen is the unit most mango buyers in India already think in. It is easy to split between two sets of relatives and enough for a family. Our Ratnagiri Alphonso and Devgad Alphonso pages sell one dozen from Rs 1,849, with higher prices for larger grades. Kesar is Rs 1,699 for a dozen, and the Pairi dozen is Rs 2,799.
When twelve is right:
- Parents or relatives in a home of three to five people.
- A client or senior colleague who will take the box home.
- A festival or birthday where one box is the whole gift.
When twenty-four mangoes make sense
Two dozen is not simply a bigger gift; it changes how the fruit is used. Choose it when:
- The home is large or joint and a dozen would disappear in a day or two.
- The gift is meant to be split between two households, such as siblings living in the same city.
- You are sending to a small gathering, for example a family function, a pooja or a housewarming.
- The recipient makes aamras or milkshakes at home.
Two cautions. First, 24 mangoes ripen at nearly the same time, so a home that cannot finish them will lose fruit. Second, if the halves are for two addresses, send two dozens to two addresses. Place separate orders, or write to us through the gift enquiry form if you have a list.
For wedding favours, return gifts and large events, the numbers are different again. See our article on weddings and return gifts.
Quantity by recipient: a simple guide
Our suggestions, as a starting point.
| Who you are gifting | Suggested quantity | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Parents or relatives in a family home | 12, or 24 for a large household | They will share and offer the fruit to visitors |
| A couple living alone | 6 Kesar or the smallest Alphonso dozen | Less fruit to finish before it ripens too far |
| A client or boss at home | 12 | A dozen looks complete and is easy to carry in |
| A colleague or neighbour as a small thank-you | 6 Kesar, if the variety suits | A modest, personal gesture |
| A small gathering or pooja | 24 | More people share the box in one sitting |
| Several recipients at once | 12 each, planned as a list | Use the gift enquiry form |

Ripening, season and delivery
Alphonso is harvested about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. Our 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027, and outside the season we do not sell fresh Alphonso. Alphonso pulp tins, in 850 g and 3.1 kg tins from Rs 590, are available all year if you need a mango gift out of season.
We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Natural ripening takes days, so a large box needs a plan for eating it. Tell the recipient it is coming.
We dispatch by Blue Dart, and about 65% of Indian PIN codes get next-day delivery. Check your PIN code at checkout. We cannot promise a delivery date for any order. Orders can be placed on the website at any hour, but that is not a delivery promise. If anything arrives damaged, report it within 24 hours of delivery through our contact page.
People also ask
How many mangoes should I gift to a family?
For a family of three to five, one dozen is the usual choice. For a large or joint household, two dozen is safer. A couple living alone is better served by a half dozen. Fresh mangoes ripen together, so match the box to what the home can finish in a few days.
Is 12 mangoes enough for a gift?
Yes, for most homes. A dozen is the standard gift unit and suits a family of three to five. A dozen of our Alphonso weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on grade. For a large household or a shared gift, consider two dozen instead.
Can I gift only 6 mangoes?
Yes, with Kesar. Our half-dozen Kesar box starts at Rs 999, and it suits one or two people or a small thank-you. Alphonso is not sold in sixes; the smallest Alphonso option is one dozen. Check the product page for the current price and season dates.
Is 24 mangoes too many for one family?
It can be, unless the home is large or will share the fruit. Twenty-four mangoes ripen at nearly the same time and do not keep long once ripe. If the box is meant for two households, send two dozen to two addresses instead of one large box.
