Alphonso mango — called Hapus in Marathi — is weighed and graded before dispatch. Every fruit from Prashant Powle's network of 48 villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad is sorted by size and Brix level. You get exactly what the grade card says.

Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Grade & Weight Comparison

Origin / Grade Weight per Fruit Brix (Sweetness) Season Window Indicative Price Range
Ratnagiri Alphonso — Small 150–200 g 16–18 °Brix Mid-April – May ₹700–₹900 / dozen
Ratnagiri Alphonso — Medium 200–275 g 18 to 24 °Brix April – June ₹900–₹1,400 / dozen
Ratnagiri Alphonso — Large 275–350 g 18 to 24 °Brix April – June ₹1,400–₹2,200 / dozen
Devgad Alphonso — Medium 220–300 g 20–23 °Brix Late April – June ₹1,200–₹1,800 / dozen
Devgad Alphonso — Large 300–400 g 21–24 °Brix May – June ₹1,800–₹2,800 / dozen
Kesar (Saurashtra) 180–250 g 18 to 24 °Brix May – July ₹600–₹1,000 / dozen

Devgad fruit consistently tests higher on the refractometer. The smaller size of some Ratnagiri fruit does not mean lower quality — the flavour concentration in a 200 g Ratnagiri Hapus rivals any large mango in India.

How Much Does a Mango Weigh?

Mango weight starts at roughly 80 grams for the smallest wild varieties and reaches 3.435 kg for the Guinness World Record fruit. A typical supermarket mango in India weighs 150–300 grams. The weight depends on three things: variety, growing conditions, and stage of ripeness at harvest.

Hapus mango weight — how much does one Alphonso mango weigh

How Much Does One Mango Weigh in Grams?

One medium mango weighs approximately 200–250 grams. A large Alphonso from Devgad can reach 350–400 grams. A small Pairi or Totapuri typically sits between 100–180 grams. These are fresh weights including skin and seed.

How Much Does a Mango Weigh in Ounces?

A medium mango at 200–250 grams equals roughly 7–9 ounces. A large Devgad Alphonso at 350 grams is close to 12.3 ounces — nearly three-quarters of a pound.

What Percentage of a Mango Is Edible Pulp?

Roughly 60–75% of a mango's total weight is edible pulp. The seed (stone) accounts for 15–20% and the skin for 10–15%. A 300 g Alphonso yields approximately 195–225 g of usable fruit — ideal for a single serving of Aamras.

Mango Weight by Variety

India grows over 1,000 mango varieties. Weight differs sharply between them.

Variety Average Weight Key Region
Alphonso (Hapus) 250–350 g Ratnagiri, Devgad, Konkan
Kesar 180–250 g Junagadh, Gir, Saurashtra
Langra 200–300 g Varanasi, UP, Bihar
Dasheri 150–250 g Lucknow, UP
Totapuri 250–400 g Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka
Pairi 100–180 g Konkan coast
Rajapuri 400–700 g Maharashtra
Safeda (Banganapalli) 300–500 g Andhra Pradesh

Rajapuri Mango Weight

The Rajapuri mango is one of India's heaviest commercial varieties. Individual fruits commonly weigh 400–700 grams. Some exceptional specimens exceed 1 kg. The large size makes Rajapuri popular for mango pulp and Aamras production.

What Is the Weight of a Mango Used in Recipes?

Most Indian recipes that call for "one mango" assume 200–250 grams of total fruit, yielding roughly 150–180 grams of pulp. For Aamras, three medium Alphonso mangoes (≈750 g total) give approximately 500 ml of finished pulp — enough for four people.

Guinness Record for Heaviest Mango

The heaviest mango ever recorded weighed 3.435 kg (7.57 lb). Sergio and Maria Socorro Bodiongan of the Philippines grew it on 27 August 2009. The variety was a local Philippine cultivar grown under exceptional orchard conditions. This remains the official Guinness World Record.

Bitki Mango — Another Record Contender

Certain oversized Indian cultivars, including some Rajapuri specimens from Maharashtra, have been documented at weights exceeding 2 kg. These are rarities, not commercially standard. The average weight of one mango sold in Indian markets sits far below these outliers.

Alphonso Mango Weight and Grading

Amba mango weight grading — Alphonso mango size chart

Alphonso mangoes sold at AlphonsoMango.in are graded at the farm gate across 48 villages in Ratnagiri and Devgad. Prashant Powle oversees selection. Fruit is sorted by hand into three size bands before packing.

What Is the Standard Weight of an Alphonso Mango?

A standard Alphonso sold by the dozen in India weighs 200–275 grams per fruit. Premium large-grade fruit from Devgad reaches 300–400 grams. Export-grade fruit for the US, UK, UAE, Singapore, and Japan is selected at 250–350 grams with a minimum Brix of 20°.

What Is the Brix Level of Devgad Alphonso?

Devgad Alphonso consistently tests at 20–24 °Brix at full ripeness. Ratnagiri Alphonso ranges from 18 to 24 °Brix. Both exceed the 16 °Brix minimum set under the GI Authorisation (GI No. 139, Registry Certificate 4163, issued 16 October 2019). Higher Brix in a smaller fruit means more concentrated sweetness per gram — which is why a 200 g Ratnagiri Hapus tastes as rich as a much larger mango of a different variety.

How Are Alphonso Mangoes Sold — by Weight or by Dozen?

In India, Alphonso mangoes are traditionally sold by the dozen (12 fruit), not by kilogram. A dozen medium-grade Ratnagiri Alphonso weighs approximately 2.4–3.3 kg in total. A dozen large Devgad Alphonso may weigh 3.6–4.8 kg. Export orders are packed by net weight per carton.

Why Mango Weight Matters

Mango Weight for Cooking and Portion Control

Nutritional databases list one medium mango at approximately 200 g (edible portion ≈ 135–150 g). That serving delivers roughly 100–120 kcal, 25–30 g of carbohydrates, and a significant dose of Vitamin C and beta-carotene. Knowing the weight of the fruit you buy lets you plan portions accurately.

Mango Weight for Export and Shipping

APEDA (registration 225579) and international phytosanitary standards require declared net weight per export carton. Each box is weighed and labelled before BlueDart air pickup. Weight accuracy protects both the buyer and the FSSAI (10020022011783) compliance record.

How Growing Conditions Affect Mango Weight

Laterite soil, coastal humidity, and the specific microclimate of the Konkan coastline between Ratnagiri and Devgad produce fruit with a dense, fibre-free pulp. Trees grown close to the Arabian Sea, such as those in Velas and Hedvi villages, produce fruit with notably high pulp-to-seed ratios. Rainfall timing in March–April directly controls final fruit size at harvest in May–June.
