Two boxes. Two GI-certified origins. Both hand-graded, hay-bed ripened, dispatched at 70–80% ripeness so they finish on your counter rather than in transit.

Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which Box?

Both carry GI Tag No. 139. The difference is subtle but real — Devgad fruit tends to sit at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range, and our order data shows Mumbai buyers lean Devgad while north India leans Ratnagiri. Here is how the grades compare across both origins:

Grade Fruit Weight Brix (full ripeness) Season Window Price Range
Small 150–180 g 18–24° February–June From ₹1,849
Medium 180–225 g 18–24° February–June Mid-range
Extra Large 250–275 g 18–24° March–May (peak) Higher
Jumbo 275–300 g 18–24° March–May (peak) Up to ₹5,499

Devgad Alphonso boxes top out at ₹5,499. Ratnagiri boxes top out at ₹5,399. The ₹100 difference reflects freight from the Devgad packing point, not a quality premium — both origins go through the same AI/ML-assisted grading scan before dispatch.

Delivery Across India

Fruit leaves the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse within 48–72 hours of harvest. It travels to our Mumbai packhouse in air-conditioned vehicles — about 10–12 hours. After 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening there, we dispatch.

Metro cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata) typically receive their box in 20–24 hours from dispatch. Everywhere else in India: 1–3 days. We service 15,000–17,000 pin codes via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code.

The box itself is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard (CFB) carton, 130 gsm, with alternate flute orientation and reinforced corners. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve — flat width 50–55 mm — on a hay bed. Twelve partition slots carry the transit pressure so the fruit does not. Six air holes, top and bottom, keep airflow going during the final ripening stage on your counter.

If fruit arrives transit-damaged or fails quality on arrival, photograph or video it and send us proof on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery. No physical return is needed. We dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next order.

Where These Mangoes Come From

Box of Alphonso mangoes sourced from Ratnagiri and Devgad Konkan orchards

Powle Home Foods sources fruit from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts — from Pawas and Golap in Ratnagiri taluka to Devgad, Jamsande and Vijaydurg on the coast of Sindhudurg. The orchards face the Arabian Sea. Trees in our partner network are typically 12–25 years old, selected by founder Prashant Powle on three criteria: Brix consistency across seasons, tree longevity, and sound alternate-bearing management.

Harvest matters as much as origin. We use a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and a cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls to the ground. For taller trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera allows the harvester to see and cut each mango precisely. This is slow work, but bruise-free fruit is the whole point.

What GI Tag No. 139 actually means for a box of mangoes

The GI registration covers Alphonso mangoes grown in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Our GI Registry Certificate No. 4163 was issued 16 October 2019 (Authorised User AU/5974/GI/139/260). That number on a box is a legal claim, not a marketing badge — it means the fruit was grown and packed within the designated zone by an authorised user of the GI.

Fruit sold as "Ratnagiri Alphonso" or "Devgad Hapus" without this authorisation has no legal basis for the claim. Worth checking before you buy elsewhere.

How the Fruit Ripens

No carbide. No ethylene chambers. Every mango in every box ripens on hay — the Aadi method — in temperature-controlled rooms at our Mumbai packhouse. The 24–48 hours there are monitored ripening, not gas-triggered softening.

We dispatch at 70–80% ripeness. The fruit finishes on your counter within about three days of delivery. If you open a box and fruit is still firm, leave it on the kitchen counter at room temperature — do not refrigerate unripe mangoes. Once ripe, they keep for 2–3 days in the fridge.

Pesticide residues are tested weekly through the season by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284). The April 2025 report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) found all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). We say independently tested, all residues within Codex limits — not "pesticide-free", because one residue was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg.

How to Order

  1. Select your grade: Choose Ratnagiri Alphonso (₹1,849–₹5,399) or Devgad Alphonso (₹1,849–₹5,499), then pick the weight grade that suits you — Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g).
  2. Add to cart: Box options are half dozen, one dozen or two dozen; select the quantity that works for your household or gifting need and proceed to checkout.
  3. We dispatch: Your order goes out via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code, reaching most Indian cities in 1–3 days.

Nutrition in a Box of Mangoes

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily intake for men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for women (65 mg/day). One medium Alphonso at 180–225 g gives you considerably more than a 100 g portion.

Mangiferin, a compound found in mango flesh, has been studied for anti-inflammatory activity in cell models (Govindappa et al., 2011). We do not make health claims about our boxes — we sell fruit, not medicine — but the nutritional profile is genuinely good.

Alphonso puree from ripe fruit is suitable as a first fruit for babies from around 6 months. Keep that as a serving suggestion and check with your paediatrician for specific guidance.

Gifting a Box of Mangoes

Gift box of mangoes for corporate and personal gifting from AlphonsoMango.in

18% of orders placed on alphonsomango.in are gifts — corporate, personal, or seasonal. A box of Jumbo Devgad Alphonso mangoes is one of the few gifts that arrives in the right season, smells extraordinary on opening, and disappears in two days flat.

Corporate orders from 5 dozen (roughly 15–20 kg) upward are handled as HoReCa/B2B orders. We have dispatched to luxury hotel groups, private banks, real-estate developers and event organisers. In May 2026 we managed a multi-destination dispatch across India for an international trade exhibition organiser — individual boxes to delegates at different addresses, all dispatched within a single day's window.

46% of our customers reorder. The average buyer takes 2.8 boxes per season. That is not loyalty-programme data — it is repeat purchase behaviour from 47,000+ customers since 2019, built entirely on fruit quality.

For bulk gifting or corporate orders, reach us directly. We do not promise cut-off times here because HoReCa dispatch is coordinated case by case around the season calendar.

People Also Ask

How much is a box of mangos?

A box of GI-certified Alphonso mangoes from alphonsomango.in starts at ₹1,849 for a half dozen of Small-grade fruit (150–180 g each) and goes up to ₹5,499 for a two-dozen box of Jumbo Devgad Alphonso (275–300 g). Ratnagiri boxes top out at ₹5,399. Price depends on origin, grade and quantity.

Both Ratnagiri and Devgad options are available February to June; pre-orders open outside that window.

How many mangoes are in a box?

Alphonso mango boxes from alphonsomango.in come in three counts: half dozen (6 fruit), one dozen (12 fruit) or two dozen (24 fruit). The exact number per kilogram depends on the grade — Small fruit runs 150–180 g each, Jumbo fruit 275–300 g — so a two-dozen Jumbo box weighs close to 7 kg of fruit.

Choose the count that fits your household size or gifting need; both Ratnagiri and Devgad origin are available in all three box sizes.

Why shouldn't mangoes be refrigerated?

An unripe mango chilled below about 13°C suffers chill injury: the pulp turns grey, flavour compounds stop developing, and the skin stays green even as the inside deteriorates. Alphonso dispatched at 70–80% ripeness needs counter time at room temperature — roughly three days after delivery — to finish ripening before it can safely go in the fridge.

Once fully ripe, Alphonso keeps well for 2–3 days in the refrigerator; the rule is counter first, fridge only after the fruit gives slightly to pressure.

What are the sweetest mangos?

Alphonso — specifically Ratnagiri and Devgad Hapus — consistently measures 18–24° Brix at full ripeness, placing it among the highest natural sugar concentrations of any commercial mango variety. Devgad fruit typically sits at the upper end of that range. No Indian mango variety has a longer or stronger reputation for sweetness, aroma and low fibre together.
