Most sellers during mango season are not what they claim. Local vendors calling their fruit "Ratnagiri ka aam" or "Devgad ka aam" rarely carry GI documentation. Many ripen with calcium carbide — a practice that is both harmful and banned under the Food Safety and Standards Act. The bhaiyas at your door, and several listings on large e-commerce platforms, fall into this category. You cannot verify their sourcing, and you certainly cannot verify their ripening method.
We source from 48 coastal villages of Ratnagiri and Devgad — including Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Devgad, Jamsande and Vijaydurg — and we hold GI Authorised User number AU/5974/GI/139/260. Every fruit is weighed, graded and scanned by an AI/ML system that checks for spongy tissue and external deformities before packing. None of our fruit is touched by carbide or ethylene chambers. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (Thane, NABL-accredited, certificate TC-8284) tests our mangoes weekly through the season — all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits.

Delivery Across India
Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.
The box itself is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard (CFB) box, 130 gsm paper, courier-grade, with reinforced corners and a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure so the fruit does not. Every mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm, length 100–120 mm by fruit size) on a hay bed. Six air holes top and bottom keep airflow steady so condensation evaporates and anthracnose does not start in the box. The partition carries the weight; the fruit just sits in it.
We dispatch at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive transit, ripe enough to finish naturally on your counter within about three days. Prashant Powle designed this dispatch window after the first full commercial season in 2020, when premature ripening during transit was the single largest complaint.
If fruit arrives damaged in transit or fails a quality check, report within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video on WhatsApp. No physical return is needed. We send a fresh replacement dispatch or apply credit to your account for the next purchase.
How to Order
- Step 1 — Select variety and grade. Visit alphonsomango.in/collections/mangoes, choose Ratnagiri Alphonso, Devgad Alphonso or Gir Kesar, then pick your weight grade (Small 150–180 g through Jumbo 275–300 g) and box size — half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen.
- Step 2 — Check out once the season opens. Confirm your delivery pin code on the product page to check serviceability; enter your address and complete payment.
- Step 3 — Dispatch. Your order is packed at our Malvan or Devgad packing centre, moves in an air-conditioned vehicle to Mumbai, ripens on a hay bed for 24–48 hours, and ships by Blue Dart.
Authenticity and GI Certification
The GI tag for Alphonso mango (GI No. 139) covers Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Powle Home Foods holds GI Authorised User number AU/5974/GI/139/260 — GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019. We also hold a second Devgad-specific authorisation, AU/6932. FSSAI licence 10020022011783 and APEDA registration 225579 cover food safety and export compliance respectively.
What the GI tag actually requires: the fruit must come from the designated geography, grown under agreed cultivation practices, and sold by an authorised user. A vendor on a marketplace who does not hold an AU number is selling without that assurance — regardless of what their listing says.
Prashant Powle was interviewed in The Economic Times, June 2026, as a GI-certified Alphonso grower and trader on weather stress and yield loss (read the piece). That year was genuinely difficult — the fruit carried it, but volumes were lower than 2024.
Ratnagiri Alphonso also won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — a district-product recognition, not specific to any seller.
What "carbide-free" actually means on the ground
Calcium carbide ripening produces acetylene gas. The result is fruit that looks ripe — yellow skin — but has a cottony texture, flat flavour and a shorter eating window. You cannot taste the carbide, but you can taste its effect. Natural ripening on hay (called Aadi ripening) takes 24–48 hours and works because the hay creates a warm micro-environment that lets ethylene the fruit produces itself do the work. We do not use ethylene injection chambers either — the ripening at our Mumbai packhouse is monitored natural ripening on hay, not gas-triggered.
Envirocare Labs (NABL, TC-8284) tested our fruit on 5 April 2025 (certificate 01/ETHAP2500044): all 28 pesticide residues within Codex maximum residue limits, 27 of 28 below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg), and one — thiamethoxam at 0.013 mg/kg — within the Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits." We do not say pesticide-free.
How We Ripen the Fruit
Harvest is by hand. The picker uses a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and a cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For taller trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera gives the picker a view into the canopy. From tree to the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse takes about two hours.
At the packhouse: post-harvest hot-water treatment reduces surface issues and extends shelf life. Then post-harvest cooling. Then 10–12 hours by air-conditioned vehicle to Mumbai. Then 24–48 hours on a hay bed in temperature-controlled rooms — natural ripening, monitored. Then grading and AI/ML-assisted machine scanning. Then packing. Harvest to dispatch: 48–72 hours.
We assumed faster would always be better. The grading data from our first full season proved otherwise — fruit dispatched too early finished ripening in the courier vehicle and arrived overripe. The 48–72 hour window, with the hay-bed stage, is the right one for the varieties we handle.
Season and Availability
Fresh Alphonso mangoes are available February to June. Peak flavour and supply is March to May. We do not sell fresh Alphonso July to January — there is no fruit to sell. If someone claims to sell fresh Alphonso in October, they are not selling what they say they are.
Gir Kesar (GI No. 185, sourced from Junagadh and Gir region) runs a similar seasonal window. Mango pulp, Aamras and mango-based products are available outside the fresh season.
The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.
What about bulk and corporate orders?
HoReCa and corporate orders start from 5 dozen (roughly 15–20 kg). Typical corporate gifting orders run 1–2 dozen boxes upward, dispatched to multiple addresses. We handled a multi-destination corporate dispatch across India in May 2026. Enquire via the contact page for bulk pricing.
Nutrition
Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). The ICMR-NIN updated these figures in 2020; older figures of 40 mg/day are no longer current.
Alphonso also contains mangiferin, a xanthone compound studied for anti-inflammatory activity (Govindappa et al., 2011 — a cell study, not a clinical trial). The Brix of 18–24° reflects natural sugars — sucrose, glucose, fructose — that develop only with proper tree maturity and slow natural ripening. Carbide-ripened fruit never reaches the same Brix because the ripening process is cut short.
Alphonso puree is suitable for babies from about 6 months as a complementary food. That is a serving suggestion, not medical advice.

People Also Ask
Is it spelled mangoes or mangos?
Both spellings are accepted in English. Mangoes is the standard form in Indian English and in most major dictionaries, including the Oxford English Dictionary. Mangos appears in some American usage but is less common globally. For a fruit with such deep roots in Indian agriculture, mangoes is the spelling you will see almost everywhere.
What are the benefits of eating mangoes?
Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g — about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 daily requirement for men and about 50% for women. Mangoes also supply beta-carotene, natural sugars for quick energy, dietary fibre, and mangiferin, a polyphenol studied for anti-inflammatory activity in a 2011 cell study by Govindappa et al.
Is it okay to eat mangoes every day?
For most healthy adults, one or two servings of mango a day fits comfortably within a balanced diet. A 100 g serving of ripe Alphonso delivers vitamin C, beta-carotene and fibre alongside its natural sugars. People managing blood sugar should check with their doctor on portion size, since Alphonso Brix runs 18–24° at full ripeness.
Which is healthier, papaya or mango?
Both are nutritious, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you need. Papaya has more vitamin C per 100 g and digestive enzymes like papain. Ripe Alphonso mango delivers 30–36 mg vitamin C per 100 g — meeting roughly 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for men — plus mangiferin, beta-carotene and natural sugars for quick energy.
If you eat both in season, you are not choosing between them — papaya runs year-round while Alphonso is available only February to June, so the practical question is usually timing, not nutrition.
