Mango is good for bones help Strengthen bones - AlphonsoMango.in

Mango is good for bones and can help strengthen bones through Vitamin C, which builds collagen — the structural protein in bone — and Vitamin A, which drives bone cell growth. Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of Vitamin C per 100 g, available fresh from February to June (the 2027 season starts on 1 February 2027).

Ratnagiri vs Devgad Alphonso

Both carry GI No. 139. The differences are real, though — origin village, typical Brix and flavour profile vary enough that 46% of customers who reorder tend to settle on one or the other.

Delivery Across India

Fruit moves from orchard to Mumbai packhouse in 48–72 hours: roughly two hours from the tree to our Ratnagiri or Devgad packing point, ten to twelve hours by air-conditioned vehicle to Mumbai, then 24–48 hours of hay-bed ripening before dispatch. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.

Packaging is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box with a 12-slot partition. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm). The partition carries transit pressure so the fruit doesn't. Six air holes top and bottom keep airflow going so the hay-bed ripening continues naturally in the box.

Honest limit: Fresh Alphonso is not available July to January. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

Mango Nutrition and Bone Health

Mango is good for bones — Vitamin C and Vitamin A in Alphonso mango help strengthen bones

Mango is good for bones because of what it brings to collagen synthesis. Collagen is the protein scaffold that holds calcium crystals in bone. Without enough Vitamin C, collagen cross-linking fails — bones lose structural integrity before calcium even enters the picture. A 100 g serving of ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of Vitamin C, which meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily intake for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day).

That figure matters most during peak season, March to May, when Devgad fruit from orchards in Girye or Vijaydurg is harvested at 22–24° Brix and the pulp is dense, not watery. Off-season mangoes — cold-stored, carbide-ripened, bought from a general wholesaler in July — don't carry the same nutrient load.

How Vitamin C in mango helps strengthen bones

Vitamin C activates prolyl hydroxylase, an enzyme that stabilises the collagen triple helix. Bone is roughly one-third collagen by weight. When you eat a ripe Alphonso and get 30–36 mg of Vitamin C per 100 g, you're feeding that enzymatic step directly. Pair it with calcium from milk — the classic Alphonso milkshake — and the collagen scaffold is ready to mineralise.

Vitamin A and bone cell turnover

Alphonso pulp contains β-carotene, α-carotene and β-cryptoxanthin — all precursors to Vitamin A. Bone is living tissue: osteoblasts build it, osteoclasts resorb it. Vitamin A regulates both cell types. Too little Vitamin A and osteoblast activity drops; bone formation slows. Mango's carotenoid load helps keep that cycle in balance. The deep saffron colour of a properly ripened Devgad Alphonso is the visible signal that the β-carotene content is high.

Bone Strength Vitamins in Mango

Per 100 g of ripe Alphonso pulp, you get Vitamin C (30–36 mg), Vitamin A precursors (β-carotene, α-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin), Vitamin B6, potassium, phosphorus and small amounts of calcium. Phosphorus and calcium together form hydroxyapatite, the mineral compound that makes bone hard. Mango doesn't replace calcium-rich foods, but it contributes phosphorus while also delivering the Vitamin C that makes collagen ready to mineralise.

Does mango milkshake help prevent osteoporosis?

Researchers note that Vitamin C intake is associated with bone mineral density. A milkshake combining Alphonso pulp and full-fat milk combines Vitamin C (mango) with calcium and protein (milk) in one glass. That combination addresses two of the three main nutritional factors in osteoporosis prevention. The third — Vitamin D — requires sunlight or supplementation; mango alone doesn't cover it.

What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?

At full ripeness, Devgad Alphonso measures 18–24° Brix, typically at the upper end of that range. Brix reflects total dissolved sugars; it also roughly tracks carotenoid density and pulp concentration. Fruit harvested from Vijaydurg or Jamsande in the Devgad taluka, where orchards are twelve to twenty-five years old and face the sea, consistently hits the higher Brix readings we test each season.

Natural Ripening and Nutrient Integrity

Calcium carbide ripening is illegal in India under FSSAI rules. It is also the fastest way to destroy the nutrient profile that makes mango good for bones. Carbide triggers ethylene gas, which accelerates surface colour change without allowing pulp sugars and carotenoids to develop fully. You get yellow skin over green, starchy pulp — no real Brix, no real Vitamin A precursors.

Every mango from Powle Home Foods is ripened on a hay bed (the Konkan method called Aadi ripening) in temperature-controlled rooms at our Mumbai packhouse. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind. Fruit spends 24–48 hours on hay, monitored, not gas-triggered. This is how Prashant Powle designed the process in 2017, sourcing from orchards across 48 coastal villages of Ratnagiri and Devgad, and it has not changed.

We test for pesticide residues weekly through the season. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (Thane, NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284) issued report 01/ETHAP2500044 on 5 April 2025: all 28 residues were within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue — thiamethoxam — was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits." We don't say pesticide-free; one residue was detected, within limits.

What are 6 foods that strengthen your bones?

Milk, ripe Alphonso mango, cashews, flaxseed, eggs and sesame seeds each contribute to bone strength through different pathways. Milk and sesame deliver calcium directly. Alphonso pulp gives 30–36 mg of Vitamin C per 100 g, which supports collagen synthesis — the scaffold that holds calcium crystals in place. Cashews add magnesium and phosphorus.

During the February–June season, Devgad Alphonso from orchards in villages like Girye or Vijaydurg pairs naturally with full-fat milk in an Alphonso milkshake — a combination that addresses both the collagen and mineral sides of bone nutrition in one glass.
